  1. Never tried that, I've heard teenagers do it... or was it boxing gloves?
  2. The long list of links to various sections on the TSSC Home Page is all jumbled up on my Mac; it's pot luck when I click one as to what I'm actually going to get - for example, if I click on 'Courier' I get Facebook. I've reloaded the page to no avail, cleared caches and eventually completely reset Safari, but it's still jumbled. Any ideas as to getting it into proper order?
  3. That's typical; I would have to have the odd car where mine rattles and whirrs like mad until the clutch is pressed...
  4. Same here; my local guys know it needs to be ethanol-proof and sell me the modern stuff off the roll. I had a work colleague totally wound up one day when he asked why the petroleum-type stuff was called K Y Jelly; I told him it was an anagram of J Y Kelly who was the Irishman who invented it. He probably still believes that.
  5. Not at all.. I have two coffees and an episode of Game of Thrones down before anyone else in the house gets out of bed... I love the peace and quiet of that time of day. The sunlight streaming into the room and waking me up from about 5.30am these days is another factor...
  6. A noise like that may only be the release bearing; rattles in neutral but goes away when clutch pressed. I'd try that as the easiest first step; of course the box does have to come out for access, but it's cheaper to solve than many other problems...
  7. Just cut the hose properly; if you saw with a hacksaw or repeated cuts with a knife you'll end up with slivers. A very sharp long bladed knife which will cut through in one pass makes for a much cleaner cut. Lubricate the ends of the metal pipes with Vaseline or the like before pushing the pipes on - this prevents damage when being pushed onto a dry pipe which agai shaves small parts of the pipe off.
  8. I had thought the needle for a Herald 13/60 was 6J but the Stromberg manual lists it as 6E. If you're searching for specifications online avoid the site go-pdf.online which you may get a link to in search results; it's a mass of viruses, popunders and popups.
  9. I used to buy drill bits from a display stand in my local Autofactors and they lasted no time at all; in fact many of them broke under any kind of pressure. I even had one wind up like a corkscrew. I asked the in-laws what they used in their professional machinery and they gave me a few spares which have lasted forever. I never asked what they would have cost originally from their suppliers.
  10. Give me a few minutes and I'll check the rag box in the garage; most of the other stuff I was wearing is in there by now. Socks are great for putting over your hands and degreasing oily or dusty bits, by the way.
  11. The input shafts definitely aren't. I can't remember off-hand right now but I think the outer and inner pinion bearings might be?
  12. My problem is my height; clothes that are the right length rarely survive two or three washes before 'Er Indoors shrinks them. She swears she doesn't but they always end up too short. Once I feel they no longer sit right then they're used in the garden or garage and very quickly become beyond public display. It gets awkward sometimes when someone calls in unexpectedly... not only the scruffiness and the oil-stains, but when one of her Board of Governors called here one night (a Church minister, too!) I answered the door wearing a very tatty, paint-splattered t-shirt with the logo: "Cool as F**K"...
  13. On my GT6 there are gaskets between the filter box and carbs only; I'd assume that the filters should seal adequately against the inside faces of the metal box - which is compressed around them by the mounting bolts - so it doesn't require any internal filters. I reckon it wouldn't cause any problems if you wanted to fit them inside the box too.
  14. My 948 Herald coupe lived all its' life in Southend from 1962 until I bought it; I bought it from a dealership there and drove it all the way to Stranraer in one go.
  15. Yes as Johnny says all the same; you can check by lining up the pulley against the line of the fan belt / crank pulley / alternator - it should be in line. Four-cylinder cars have a different pulley which won't be in line with the pulleys on the bigger engine, so the belt will be twisted at an angle and will come off very quickly.
  16. I've been looking at those two pics like one of those stereoscope thingies in the hope that something would leap out at me, but all it did was to give me a sore head... however I know it's only the angle of the photo but it seems I can see more of one spring than the other. That's where I'd start; swap the springs over and see if it changes the lower side, or if it makes any difference.
  17. Quite nice... looks very solid and unmolested which is the way I like them. Those extra holes in the dash would annoy the life out of me, though...
  18. It's only the last quarter-turn that does that...
  19. There's a small hole in all of the A-posts, just off centre towards the bottom - put there by the factory. The captive plates are fitted to the rear of the outer panel before it's all welded together, so can't be accessed without cutting more holes or splitting the welds! Not easy... so replacement is a major job. If someone has already cut holes then that's a big bonus. If you can manage to get a nut onto the bolt it will grip the bolt, same as the captive plate did, and so still allow the same range of movement. The entire plate moves, not just the bolts as if they were in slotted holes. If you tap out the plate to take a (slightly) larger bolt eg metric, the plate should now still grip the bolt as it would have originally so no need for a nut.
  20. I don't consider myself green but I'm tighter than a duck's whatever. I believe in looking after things, taking care of them as they cost money to buy and will cost money to replace... so my clothes go through stages of being wearable in polite company, then reaching a point where they become 'garage clothes' and then when they're too holey even for that they become rags for cleaning. Like you, I'm always closing doors and windows and turning lights off, to the annoyance of the two females I live with who will open the fridge, leave it lying open, and when I close it will shout from another room "I'm putting stuff in there!" despite clearly and obviously lying on the settee.
  21. Buy good drill bits. I used to buy cheapies and they wore out in minutes; go for good branded versions and they'll last a lot longer.
  22. Have a look at Spalding Fasteners, search for 5/8 unf nut - they have a very wide selection that may suit. https://www.spaldingfasteners.co.uk/unf-high-tensile-zinc-plated-steel-nyloc-half-nuts/
  23. Better going for the larger GT6 plastic fan which will fit the end of the crank on the Vitesse. I'd assume if it fits the limited room in the GT6 engine bay it will fit the Vitesse ok. https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/274733061741?hash=item3ff75dd66d:g:ksYAAOSw2LFeOYgL
