    Engine oil

I change mine yearly no matter the use or the mileage but it's always at the start of the season, so around March or so; never thought to do it over the lay-up period.
  2. ...not to mention cordless angle grinders. Actually they're both pretty much the same, mooted about by many as a good idea when in reality all they do is assist criminals and make thieving much easier.
  3. The additives in the later GL5 will corrode the bronze bearings or washers. It's fine for most modern cars but not those of our era. Stick to GL4 for gearbox and differentials, as it's much easier to change oil than metal bits.
  4. I thought the water pump pulleys were all the same size, part number 201329, but with the latest Heralds - especially a 1970/71 car - it wouldn't surprise me if Triumph used a different pulley from another model. A fan belt should be easy to source - get a piece of string, put it around the components following the same route as the fan belt, and measure the length required. Any good autofactors will sell you a belt of the required length. Alternatively, if the old belt will fit, read along the outer edge and see if there's any measurement or part number printed along the edge, as in my GT6 belt in the photo. This will help source a new one. The one I've found listed for later Heralds is Unipart GCB 11025 Earlier Heralds, 1200 and 948, are listed as Unipart GCB 11038. If your original belt is a good fit, I'd try to source a replacement locally like-for-like.
  5. I know nothing about the technical side of things and am seriously impressed with the work you're doing, but surely that engine is to the rear rather than the middle? Or does the term cover a bigger range than I imagine?
  6. That's just boasting... Pete (BFG) can you post photos if you get any?
  7. So is the car... Actually from the thread title I thought you were going to tell us you'd bought an MG... Over here they just steal the entire car - we've lost around 16 high-powered cars and 4 x 4s through keyless entry thefts in the last week alone. Straight across the frictionless border and off to sunnier climes, where no questions are asked...
  8. When I lived in Fermanagh there was a lot of dodgy stuff about, some of it laughingly called Poteen. As in the old saying: when it was good, it was very very good, but when it was bad... well you could strip paint and clean engines. There was one particular brew called 'Dark Early'... now, it was very moreish. It was supplied in 5 litre plastic containers and always reminded me of someone coming back from the shop with a gallon of paraffin...
  9. The benefits of a Classic education (including Latin.... hated it!) Or: I have a book of famous quotes on the shelf beside me, so had to have a sneaky peek! (A room without books is like a body without a soul - Cicero) Oscar Wilde did say: 'Be yourself, everyone else is already taken.' He could have said: Use your own jokes, that one is already posted... but it was so good I remembered it, unlike most of the others I hear...
  10. Twas actually the venerable Roman Emperor Marcus Aurelius, what he said was: "You should consider that Imitation is the most acceptable part of Worship, and that the Gods had much rather Mankind should Resemble, than Flatter them." It was shortened by Caleb Colton in 1820 to it's current form in a book called "Many Things in a Few Words." Which is what I should really stick to! Thanks, Lain.
  11. Yes, sorry. (plagiarism!!) I couldn't remember where I'd read it!! Age again... thanks Don.
  12. Apparently some guy was arrested the other day following a chase in an electric car, which ended when it ran flat. He was later released without charge... but good to see you got the alternator running. If you think Scots spelling of names is interesting, you should see some of the Irish names I've come across in my time...
  13. Nice! Looks very original down to the radio.
  14. Look on the bright side: that'll heal free of charge. Had you broken a bit off the car, you'd have to pay for a new one.
  15. I'd reckon an entire Aldi would require slightly more than Parcelforce 48hr delivery. DPD would, however, deliver it and hide it under the mat at the back door, where of course no-one would think of looking...
  16. Of course he will; it'll be a major component of the electric cars that only certain members of The Party will be allowed to drive.
  17. We ain't got Aldi over here.. we're NOT posh enough, apparently...
  18. That's a good tip. I've read for so many years to use cardboard but I can see how thin metal can be folded and will keep the shape much better than card. I must start salting away my M&S Chicken Kiev trays..
  19. Seller says it was original and in excellent condition, but sold for £3.70 in any case. No more for sale at present but I'll keep a look out.
  20. Mine are missing from the convertible, but as I restored the Estate they're fitted to that. They just prevent metal to glass contact and make the windows seal at the top, but more against vibration than any kind of weather seal. I'd guess they're more of an optional extra these days unless you wind the windows like Arnie and are likely to cause damage. As luck would have it, Paul H has just posted a video elsewhere in the forum, and the red convertible has them fitted - look at the top of the quarterlight, against the B post of the damson saloon behind, and you'll see how they look when fitted.
  21. I'm sure I have a photo of mine fitted to my 1500 somewhere but from back in the 35mm film days so it's probably stored somewhere inaccessible, but from what I remember it hung down below and behind the radiator, I think I hung it on brackets from the radiator support - maybe as John say it was vulnerable but I had no problems with it. I used hydraulic hose from a local supplier - it was wire reinforced so well protected from damage. The original hose was Dunlop SAE100 28bar but I found that it cracked quite quickly. I kept it for the GT6 and with the different oil filter position the thermostat was able to be attached to the top of the suspension turret; I think in the 1500 it was forward of that and just hung suspended from the hoses, cable tied to the nearest suitable fixed point - possibly the reason they cracked before being replaced with reinforced ones.

  23. No, not that long ago - in fact just found it! Might be the same one as they use shampoo, alcohol and brown sugar.
