  1. I suppose the question could be, how difficult would it be to add one post fitting? Could you fit a suitable plug now with a blank in the hole so it’s a simple job to retro fit a bypass pipe if subsequently needed?
  2. I do have a pressure gauge which I think works on fuel too.
  3. Oh fuel pump is new. And seems to work well - it filled the carb bowls quick enough and was leaking from the pipes well enough today. Unless the pressure is too high of course.
  4. Roger. That is one thought that I have sadly. I hope not as it’s not a simple job - well it’s simple but lots to take off again. I did check the timing of the cam a couple of times and it did check out. But if these carbs don’t “work” then I’ll check it again. I know the tdc mark on the pulley matched up so it’s not hard to work out the btdc for the cam to be at tdc on the no1 inlet valve. It doesn’t pull low down either - 2000rpm and it’s not happy. I’ll find out soon enough.
  5. It runs now Pete with adjustments as per It was on Rogers car! I will check the balance obviously and the mixture - but I’m hoping that I can get it to drive nice as well as idle sweet.
  6. I will look at my condenser as although it revs nice stood still, it doesn't under load - though as it is a "new" dizzy, I would hope that the Dizzy Doctor would put quality stuff in! Anyway, I've fitted the final petrol feed lines to the carbs - I forgot to fit the one from the rear carb to the front carb - so I fitted the one that came off my old engine as its a shiney one and matches the carbs better. And I started the car - as expected the oil light took a bit of time to go out - but not too bad and the rattle did go quite quickly - hopefully when I start it again at the weekend it will be much shorter! I did turn it over for a few seconds with no choke to at least start the oiling process and fill the bowls with fuel - I then found a leak from one of the joints on the front carb where the metal pipe changes to rubber - the spring clip turned out to be not quite tight enough and the metal pipe not pushed in quite enough (It should have been, but not quite it would seem!) Put a jubilee clip on as I couldn't find another hose clip in my box of many - other sides both smaller and bigger, but not the right one - Typical! Andway, with the only adjustments made to the carbs to make sure the throttle closes properly and the choke pulls - its starts and runs. Probably runs even nicer now than before - but didn't run it too long as although it was warmer than last night it wasn't like a summers day! But I achieved what I wanted to do!
  7. Try changing the motorised locking mechanism on a Land Rover discovery 3 - 2 hands isn’t enough unfortunately 1 hand is too big to get in the holes. ?
  8. Hi Clive - I may be there - not 100% sure yet though I am tempted to pop along! If nothing else to meet some of the TSSC members in the flesh! But definitely want one - there is no rush, so if I make it and it's no trouble if you take one for me then I'll collect it there - or if not post it when you have some time when you get back.
  9. Roger's wife very kindly dropped off his "old" carbs today and I tinkered and swapped the carbs over - they feel much much better than either of mine - but the proof will be in the running! I just hope they cure my poor running problem - if they don't I'll have to start looking elsewhere.
  10. Well! I did a bit of tinkering tonight and decided to put the new Mann filter on. Firstly I couldn't undo the filter by hand - no great surprise - so got my reasonably old - 2 to 4 years old - (But never used because never had the room to see it work!) filter removed - a three pronged affair with a half inch wrench fitting - anyway it worked a treat. Once loose, I quickly span it off to ensure little oil loss - I needn't have worried - it was completely empty. And I mean empty - I could peer in and see the spring at the bottom - no wonder I had a slow pressure build up! I've fitted the new one after putting as much oil in as i could and spun that on. I've not run the engine again - but will at the weekend I hope - unless I get some time tomorrow. So, although they weren't cheap and I know the adapters are on the way, I feel vindicated in changing it!
  11. I've just found this site on Ebay that sells various head lamps - these are Crystal ones for the Spit or Herald - but would have thought would fit the Gt6 (And given I have a Gt6 bonnet I ought to check!) https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Crystal-7-halogen-H4-Head-lights-upgrade-Triumph-Spitfire-Herald-lamps-lucas/401017502153?epid=21004470981&hash=item5d5e8179c9:g:81kAAMXQUmFSgk4U £29 a pair.
  12. I am Roger, but decided to get a couple of the right 5/8 Mann filters until the adapter arrived. I was expecting longer than a couple of weeks tbh. But if I hadn’t got these in then they would have been!
  13. I think Land Rover defender head lamps fit too. Well for the spitfire - but I thought they were the same as the gt6 ?
  14. I have little of that Clive! It gives me a bit of peace of mind! It's only money! I aim to have non left when I peg it - though I hope that isn't for a very long time!
  15. I bought 2 Mann W 713/14 from a company that claimed to be in the UK - but they actually came from Germany - and they arrived today (I won't divulge the price in case someone has a dodgy ticker!) But I'd rather put a good filter on now and not have to worry (I hope) about the start up rattle until the adapters come. Give that the oil tends to drain out of the filter, I assume I can just spin the old one off and spin the new one on (Filling with oil first if I can) without dropping all the oil?
  16. About £260 exchange for a Lucas (for a Spitfire). No exchange, then add another £70 or so for the core.
  17. Well, that depends who's doing the driving! If its me, then definitely need more that slippers - But someone like Demi Moore (Back in the day!) - well.............
  18. Oi! My daily is a BMW with angel eyes! Actually, they do look good on the Bemmer (IMHO) - but not on a classic - Some Defenders are now being fitted with similar and I'm in two minds - depends what else has been done TBH.
  19. Hi Roger I'd read your earlier post and the bit about them being knackered - but sort of skipped the next bit as you would end up with two sets of rubbish carbs - but it would be very kind if we could do the swap if possible. Mark
  20. I did rebuild the carbs on the old engine - but didn't rebush as I don't have the right gear for that - and its things like the throttle return springs have had to be assisted (like earlier ones did) and the choke sticks as I converted to non-waxstat. The ones on the engine now all worked better in respect that the throttles sprang back nicely and the choke is smooth - hence I put them on - but having spent a bit a time looking at them, I can feel some spindle movement - the floats clearly need something doing to them and they are waxstats - which may or may not have had the penny trick done. I'm very much in two minds. Hang the expense and get some properly refurbed carbs - or make do with my old pair. If I do get a new set, they will fit whatever needles I want (Well G&L will!) - so I'd get them to fit something like an AAR or AAQ which looks on the graphs to different enough to the ones I got from Roger to give some sensible options.
  21. Thanks Richard Assuming the hs4 southern carbs have in stock are the right sort - then they are a similar price. Don’t know about burlems - I’ll give them a call tomorrow. It’s a very difficult to know the best course of action. If Money is no object, then it’s easy. But as most people money is relevant.
  22. Got a quote back from Gower and Lee today - not cheap by any means - £375 plus vat and delivery on an exchange basis - or rebuild mine for the same cost but wait 10weeks. Anyone else I should look at before making a decision? Which I still don't know what it will be!
  23. Well that is very true. The main limitation is the choke sticking other than that they have been ok - but I accept that it is still an unknown to a degree. And good to hear real world reviews. On that basis I shall not bother with turners. Either way it’s case of posting them to the refurbisher so it’s neither here nor there the location!
  24. Hi Richard, It is a thought that I've had (I have lots of thoughts!) - Turner Carbs is the one I've heard of before. I've enquired as to cost and timescales - and will probably follow it up with a phone call. for the options. I still might swap the carbs - nothing to lose as I know my original ones work with a couple of limitations and it would at least "prove" there is nothing wrong with the engine!
  25. Thanks Roger. No worries - Think I will try my old carbs first - and if no better, then think of a plan B - wasn't planning on EFi - but I guess is an option - though cost will have to come into it!
