Hi Roger. I do have the pair off my old engine - which were ok - but the choke tended to stick and I had to fit return springs on the throttle to get the butterfly’s to close properly! I will probably swap them over - I kept with the ones that came with the engine because the throttles worked nicely as did the choke. But seems they are not as good as i thought! But if you have a spare set that are in serviceable condition that would be fantastic

Oh and yes standard fuel pump.
-
I will do Roger - but it’s too cold to do anymore today. Sky was nice and blue earlier - now it’s grey and foreboding ? if I didn’t know better I would say snow was coming! Interesting I can’t see an overflow on the float chambers - my old carbs have them, but seemingly not these. They still have the waxstats on too. I do have some conversion jets in stock but not the bits that you fit to make the choke work. Weirdly the butterfly’s have had the poppet valves soldered shut.
-
Took the car out for another spin this morning - but still not right. I’ve done some twiddling and gone back to basics - and essentially it looks like the front carb float is either knackered or the needle valve is sticking as the petrol is flooding into the Venturi (?) via the needle. I also had a water leak from the rear pipe that goes into the heater - but nipping up the clip seems to have sorted that one.

Dave, No complaints regarding the help - and I hope I didn't come across as dissing you. Initially, I want to get it to run somewhere close - get some miles on it and them tweak it to make it spot on.
-
That's quite a lean needle Dave - though I appreciate the yellow spring will richen it up a bit! I've sticking with the red spring and the ABQ for now (On the grounds I have them and a couple more to try as well) before I start changing them for ones I don't have! I will get it to run "ok" first then get some miles on it before a trip to a rolling road later in the year.
-
Is this for gear ratio's as it suggests the SU needles graphs will be appearing sometime. I downloaded the SU app (Which for the graphs is fine with the free version - its a tenner if you want suggestions of needles) http://www.winsu.co.uk/ You do need an old version of Dot.net though. (I'm running Win10 64bit and it works ok)

Richard - I haven't taken the the cover off - but I'm pretty sure it just unclips - I have taken off (Well put it on as it came "loose" with the car!) and its only a couple of bolts each side.
-
Thanks Dave - they look good - shame you can't see them normally! I've got some P clips - I had thought about it briefly, but only a passing thought! But I'll put them on now (Well, not now, but later before i go out again in it!)

As in the house!

Well, slightly later than planned initially due to being too late in the evening to do anything and then this morning I had to change the heating pump - which should have been simple - but I couldn't undo the one pump flange so had to drain it completely and change the isolation valve And its raining now. So all I've done is fitted the K&N's, stud stack and the ABG needles from Roger. If it drys out later I will try and give it a run - or tomorrow as the forecast it better - assuming it doesn't snow of course! One question - do I need to fix the fuel pipe running across the filters to anything?

John Apologies, I simply asked a question. Besides, the thread drifted about 7 or 8 posts in. I admin other forums and the best way in my experience is to report the post and the admin will split the thread if they think it appropriate.

What's the red car in the picture Roger? It looks a bit like one of old disabled cars - only they were always hospital blue!
-
Actually, its (As in Millers 20/50) available with free post on Opie's ebay shop https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Millers-Oils-Classic-Pistoneeze-20W-50-Mineral-Engine-Oil-5-Litres-5L/172991846314?hash=item28471e17aa:g:GdAAAOSwaB5XqJ81

I've just looked at the Millers oil 20/50 on the Opie website - and is currently £26 for 5ltr plus delivery - but that is free if you spend more than £60. But - again stirring the hornets nest! Pistoneeze 20/50 or 20/60

From afar the paint looks ok - but then so does mine - mine needs to have a little bit of work done to it in that regard - but I have a man that can sort it as body and paint is not really my thing!

I don’t know how hot the carbs get to know if the difference in viscosity is enough to make a measurable difference. They do sit above the exhaust manifold so there is heat - but I like many have a heat shield. Again how much that helps is difficult to determine - though with my job I could strap some temperature loggers to various places around the carbs etc and drive it about a bit. I can’t remember off hand the logging times - but it’s certainly a second and possibly less. I’m guessing the only real way to find out the power and pickup etc is to put it on a rolling road so you can actually measure the difference.
-
Hi Roger, Yes I was going to fit all of that first - I meant that before I put SAE 20 oil in the dampers. I know Triumph recommend 20/50 but SU recommend SAE 20 - seems to work ok! Yes the head has been ported.

According to the MANN website, the W 713/14 is still available and does list the Spitfires as one of the applications. https://catalog.mann-filter.com/EU/eng/catalog/MANN-FILTER Katalog Europa/Oil Filter/W 713~14 But I'll still go for the conversion to give several options.

Not done many miles between the listed MOT's - 5 since 2014 - but nothing known since 2016 when it was last MOT's (So expired in 2017) so could have done a few since then!
-
Not knowing how they are fixed, but if its glue, then dental floss is the common way I think.
-
Thanks Roger and Pete - I'll probably try the middle ones first and see how it goes and then go up or down depending on the feel of everything. I'm sure a bit of playing will be required! As long as I can get it running nicely, I can finesse the rest once a few miles are on it and get to a rolling road - there was one near where I live a few years ago that seemed to be popular with the clubs - but it is no longer trading as far as I can tell.
-
Done some digging around (Via the link earlier) and the 5/8 thread is UNF - so pitch 18 as you say Clive - which I can't find! But I've also had is suggested that the Mann W 713/14 is suitable for the stand 5/8-18 thread. But is obsolete.......
