  1. The brakes appear to be sorted. Popped the cylinder which was weeping and found that the internal seal had two areas where the rubber had bits missing. Looks like I hadn't seated the seal properly before pressing in the piston and it had shaved some slivers of the seal which had stated to weep. Replaced and bled. Now appears to be ok.
  2. Kevin. You might like to consider the following: From the tabs along the top (I am using a desktop computer so it may be different on mobile devices) click 'Activity' Then 'My Activity Streams' Create a personal customised activity set-up and name it (I have one set for all streams for the past 14 days) This listing has a different layout from the 'default' one, and shows the profile picture of the last poster to that stream and also how long ago that post was lodged. If you click on that time, it will take you immediately to that particular post. I have found that this now works well for me and saves me from having to tab through pages of postings. It may not be everyone's cup of tea but it may be an alternative for some people. I suppose that if it's popular in any way, you might be able to add something like it as a tab at the top and everyone could customise it to suit themselves. Hope this helps you in some way. By the way, I have just found out that if you click the 'time' (one hour ago etc) on any of the pages, in goes to that posting.
  3. Good luck with it. I hate trying to understand someone else's 'logic'.
  4. Ok Kevin, I give up. What are you trying? I have also just found out by accident that if you hover the cursor over the member's profile picture, you not only get their brief details, but what they are viewing at that moment!! Can a member turn this off and if so, how?
  5. I have noticed that when I get a notification of a new post, there is a button on the message which says "go to post". When I click on it, it does just that and goes directly to that post. Perhaps there is a way, at admin level, that this could be incorporated into the latest posts listing, so that when you click on the listing it takes you straight to that post. It is in the email notification code, so it should be possible to link the same code to the latest post page.
  6. That's what I call a toolkit. Work for the AA/RAC/Green Flag by any chance? Anyone else out there. I'm trying to put together a tool kit, probably not quite as extensive as Clive's, but just a reasonable selection for the place where you break down, with no mobile signal that the average user needs
  7. True, but a realistic appraisal. By the way, does anyone know were the serial number of the ignition lock is please.
  8. Hi Pete. New does appeal, is the build as good as the original? Do you have any words of wisdom about cleaning the seals etc as per previous post?
  9. No, not done anything exterior yet. I have had bad results from domestic 240v led lighting. Fitted 100s of leds in various places over the past 5 years, many have failed before the rated 25,000 hours expected use. Don't trust them at the moment for exterior use on a car. Inside not as important, outside possibly very dangerous. I feel that leds have been forced on us before the technology is proved
  10. Got the kit from 'Chester'. It included the small washers that live in the centre of the two caliper halves. I didn't replace those as everything I read warned me off sllitting the caliper halves!! Then I also read that you should use 3 in one oil in the dashpots. Something which I believe gave great merryment at twiddle day (mark I). It could be that I trapped some muck when fitting the seals, maybe I should have used a little rubber grease in the grooves when fitting. Maybe you and Pete should write your own version of the 'Haynes' manual. Do you think it worthwhile to take out the rubbers, clean up carefully and try again with rubber grease. The other 3 seals appear to be ok...at the moment.
  11. Hi Paul Current item number on for instrument light on eBay.co.uk is 292203585786 (copy and paste into eBay search), make sure you get the correct fitting, screw/bayonet and also check size as some are small bullet bulbs. The interior light on mine is a 'festoon' type eBay no. 361840968291. The interior lights run a little cooler than the 5 watt tungsten and are more blue/white than orange/white. I had one melt the plastic 'glass' some years ago.
  12. Just gone out and found a small puddle of brake fluid under the front off-side wheel. The caliper appears to be weeping even though it has a new piston and seals. Before I strip it and get a new seal kit, could it be that the caliper unit is past it and need replacing. It was fine up to moth-balling the car and, as mentioned, has been refurbished, could I have put the rubbers in wrong or, in the view of safety, should I be looking at replacement. If so does this need to be done in pairs? It was fine for the MOT and has shown no weeping for the past two weeks.
  13. Just fitted green leds to my spitfire gauges great improvement. Use those which are a cluster of 5 (4 round the sides, 1 pointing out of the top). Got them off fleabay, 10 for £5.69, variety of colours. Also got some interior light leds from a different supplier. They only use about 1 watt, so I can leave the doors open for longer without draining the battery as quickly!!
  14. Kevin. Further to my previous post, is there any way to sort posts by date. I have had a good look around but there doesn't appear to be a 'sort by' function. Is there any way one could be incorporated. I am probably the only member who would use it, so probably not worth while but if it's available it would be good to know where to look for the pre-set as there are probably other useful functions hidden there!!
  15. Check out Doug's original post under the heading STOP LIGHTS. Took me ages to find it again using the search routine. I didn't realise that there were loads of preset options hidden away!
  16. ... and if all listed above fails, check the the spade connectors on the wires are actually making contact with the copper in the wires, not just the insulation - that was my solution. This very problem was what started me on this most excellant forum with its great wealth of knowledge and experience. Do a forum search on tail brake lights.
  17. Here's one for discussion that I haven't yet found on the forum. What is the normal 'tool kit' to carry in the boot, apart from the spare wheel? Obviously space is limited and I was wondering what everyone else considers important.
  18. OK, thanks gents, look like another spell underneath poking about. Looks like someone read the same internet news group posting that I did. Think it may have been on the 'Totally Triumph' or TR sites
  19. I suspect that it will be the drive shaft UJ. I mentioned previously that there was a knock before the car was mothballed, but now she is on the road, it appears to be much worse. You mentioned previously that the drive shaft spigot needed grease. I'm sure it has never been done while I have had the car, so is probably badly worn. Also reading around that the UJ needed greasing as well, which was news to me, so no wonder that things are getting worn. By the way Pete, you will love this, On my way out the other day, the car wouldn't start so I stripped the carbs (don't ask why) after putting the last of my 20w50 oil in the engine, knocked over one of the dashpots after dumping the 3 in one and..... no oil left!!! Managed to drain enough out of the bottom of the can to suffice but it was nearly back to the 3 in 1 to get to the local H**fords
  20. Thanks Pete. Clunk is continuous and speeds up as car accelerates, slows down on braking etc. It is a strap drive, but all the straps were ok 2 weeks ago when I did the pinion seal. There is no discernable vibration, just the clunk from the back end. If its the uj prop shaft to diff, I can replace quickly. If I need to strip the dif or the ujs on the stub axles then not so quick!
  21. Ok. So now I turn my attention to the clunk from the back end. Sounds like it might be the prop shaft UJ, but before I take the spanners to it, could it be anything else like the diff or rear shafts?
  22. Ok. Got her running fairly well when warm. Still poping a bit when on choke. Not had a chance to set up properly with air filter cowl and tubes in place. Probably Sunday. Pleased to say she is handling well. My Colourtune didn't work. Fitted it but only appeared to be firing on 3. Could be it needs a better clean or maybe the washer from the old spark plug is not sealing well enough. The original copper washer got lost in the mists of time. I think after tuning, the next job is to sort out the clunk from the diff and back shafts. I have a vague recollection that they were noisy before hibernation!
