  1. Yes the little dial shows complete millimeters up to 10mm which is the full travel of the instrument...
  2. Whats happened to your diff? Usually they want a serviceable exchange unit as the gear wheels are very difficult/expensive to source..
  3. I was going to say it might have broken in initial build and the other bit fallen out even before it was first run...

Ah maybe Im thinking of PI which of course is a different kettle of fish...

Makes you wonder why vac isnt used on some models or are they sports cars that probably wont do much cruising?
  6. In my experience diffs are one of the stronger components in our cars and last pretty well although of course the seals do fail. As long as they havent been run dry second hand units are quite often good because the donor car rusted away long before enough mileage had been done to wear out its diff😁

It certainly does something to timing on closed throttle but thats not its purpose because many cars including some Triumphs dont have vac advance. Presumibly they dont worry about optimising cruising fuel consumption....

My motorbike did the same thing (popping) when I changed from the standard exhaust to a sports one☹️ Possibly worsens fuel consumption as well because unburnt fuel gets sucked past the exhaust valves before they get a chance to close...

Think its partial opening that gives the advance as when cruising to improve fuel consumption. Certainly I dont get much advance if I check my dynamic timing at idle with the vac still connected. I suspect that after market SS exhausts dont have as much baffling inside as the originals did...

The item fits neatly in the tailpipe and is adjustable for back pressure which I feel is probably my issue....

    Exhaust db killer

Well timing set to standard and drives beautifully but is a larger diameter mk2 exhaust bodged😁 to a mk1 manifold so no centre box. I havent checked compression so maybe valves not sealing 100% but also its a bit too noisy for me now that Im old...
  12. Ive just bought one of these to stuff up my Vitesse tail pipe! Well I get popping and banging plus although not a sports system it could be quieter so Im hoping this will help. Standby for the result...
  13. Hi Martin, I think this diff could be used on a rotoflex and is a slightly longer ratio than standard Vitesse so could be a welcome upgrade...
  14. To narrow down more where an ignition fault lies you can pull out the centre lead from the dizzy cap and carefully check if a HT spark is present to earth. If so the problem is downstream ie cap, rotor, leads, plugs....
  15. It could be rattle from the gearbox itself as I believe the laygear can do this. Do you get the noise when driving as well? If not something you can try is to push lightly on the gear lever from neutral to 4th, clutch engaged with engine on idle but car stationary. You have to be careful it doesnt suddenly go into gear😳 but the idea is the synchro ring starts to transmit torque to the laygear and the noise its making stops....
  16. Yes thats why I like plastic caps and the extensions even more👍
  17. Oh one thing I found Dave is that the cheapy MC has a slightly smaller diameter cap (metric?) so a Girling extender doesnt fit without some bodgery....
  18. Has it had a nice long run on a hot day to get the bearing up to temperature and its grease runny? Some WD40 squirted in it might have loosened it up so it spins instead of skidding...
  19. Not talking reservoir capacities here but internal piston diameters...
  20. I have a Land Rover clutch MC on my Vitesse brakes and it works very well so theres no problem doing this. However you must make sure any one you use has a big enough bore or pedal travel will be excessive. Check that your spare unit is as least as big as the standard brake MC. 😳
  21. Ive just fitted extensions to both my brake an clutch MC (both small reservoirs) and the big advantage is that I can see any change in level much more easily now👍
  22. The original workshop manual stated that replacement pumps may need this adjustment to get the pressure right. This is because pumps are made by third parties plus their springs may well weaken over time so the initial pressure they deliver is a bit of an unknown....
  23. I think best to accept that damage as its minimal and any new gear wont be worn to the laygear so could generate worse noise. I take it the synchro hub in the picture isnt pushed fully home as its not completely engaged with the gear is it?
  24. Ah the conundrum of life eh! Of course you also have to ask yourself how many times youre going to spill brake fluid on paintwork in those 12 years😭
  25. I wouldnt worry about the amount of air that gets in as youre going to have to bleed all the way from the new master cylinder to a slave anyway and to know its 100% I would do all four as well - normal brake fluid is cheap enough....
