  1. You know how the bathtub failure curve goes Pete. Accuspark/Powerspark not especially unreliable these days I dont think but it so difficult to diagnose them if they do fail and such a pain for want of a spare...
  2. That'll be the problem Pete, they do fail as theres a lot of electronics packed into a small space and it has to deal with quite a bit of power in an arduous environment☹️ Its because of this I keep a spare module (any one will do as long as its correct polarity and you have the small allen key) in the car so if needed I can just change over the plastic encased sensor without distrubing the mounting plate and ignition timing...
  3. yes but theres still not a gap is there as the broken off shank will stick out of the gun the length of the brake pipe spacer tube used? Instead of the gun hitting the paintwork it'll be the end of the shank😭
  4. 'and use a short length of brake pipe, maybe only 1/2 inch or so, over the shank of the river before putting it in the gun - this gives a bit of a gap' Surely with this method theres then the extra length of the rivet shank sticking out of the gun which will still be close to the paintwork and with even more potential to damage it?

    Worrying noise

What did they think of the suggestion of worn crank bearings?
  6. I seem to remember some are pop rivets and that the rivet gun always kicks as you operate it so jumping sideways onto the paintwork😭 Now I would try doing them through a hole cut in a piece of thick card!
  7. The Triumph workshop manual says to get the pushrod end of a rocker to its highest point by eye and then turn the crank a full turn (=1/2 cam revolution) so the tappet is on the back of the cam and the rocker clearance can be checked... However this method requires a lot of crank rotation so on a six cylinder most people use the rule of 13 as you have described Dave. Youre right the back of the cam lobe has plenty of track so positioning accuracy doesnt need to be 100%.
  8. oh I think that might explain the different sizes Peter, how does this sound: In the original rubber only version theres no risk of the braiding/swaging causing a problem if the hose gets strained a little in use so one size will do. However with the Goodridge that is a risk so they supply longer versions to ensure theres plenty of free play....
  9. seems incredible doesnt it that they still offer both standard and +50mm versions of the Goodridge hose unless of course theres that much variation between individual cars its necessary to have the choice! Think Rimmers ought to explain that on their webpage although of course the standard rubber hose only comes in the one size. The 2L Vitesse front hose GBH203 is even more complicated with standard, +50mm and +90mm on sale🤪
  10. As far as I can see everything agrees with the original instructions so think the ring position is clear. However the gaps is another topic and Im no expert but wouldnt want to go smaller than the manufacturers recommendation because of the risk of the ring becoming too tight when hot and breaking😲
  11. true, its got to be a thin end wedge and I think wood, if possible, would be best to minimise any damage...
  12. I meant a wedge between chassis and tub in suitable locations?
  13. Sounds like it might need some sort of wedge (wooden) to help it separate?
  14. ha ha, so they had first generation climate control to make sure it didnt get too hot in the cabin! I can see why it wasnt necessary to keep that system in the Herald/Vitesse🤣
  15. Out of interest can anyone tell me what the bourdon tube does on these heater valves? Is it for some sort of automatic control in which case where does it measure temperature?

Its an engine oil and should be thicker than yours when hot so giving a higher minimum oil pressure which may or may not reduce the noise. Once this test has discounted the bearings as the problem or you have replaced them you can change to any oil you wish👍

I would have thought this is as good as any to produce a possible improvement...
  18. Not had any experience with the GT6 tailgate but with door seals Ive had to bend the seal mounting metal lip of the door surround in and out to get a good and uniform contact all the way round. I would suggest that, unless your seal is damaged in the places it doesnt make contact, putting on a new hopefully thicker seal could make closing more difficult and when you adjust for that the seal is lost elsewhere so youre back to square one☹️

Trouble is, of course an cooler oil can give better pressure, but is the oil still operating at the optimum temperature...
  20. I dont think ride height makes any difference to the hose length required as its really the shock that determines suspension travel. Really to check if the hose is long enough you need to move the suspension, minus its spring, up and down by hand at both full locks....
  21. Fortunately, I think the worst scenario of full lock and full suspension compression is pretty unlikely but of course the risk assessment depends on the owner....
  22. Think the suspension is more loaded in Alans photo then in the manual so the bottom arm is horizontal and the top arm angled upwards more meaning the top ball joint will have changed position to suit....
  23. Well GT6 and Vitesse do use the bigger type 16 calipers...
