  1. If memory serves the gear lever in 4th gear is very close to the hand brake when it's activated. As we plan on letting the dog go in and out of the car I am thinking of shortening the gear lever by 2-3 inches. A guy is selling a shortened one but he wants 50€ for it and I am not sure why I can't just lop mine off and re-thread it... I don't remember the Spitfire being particularly hard to shift so I am not worried about leverage... Thoughts?
  2. I bought a similar product int he States and it worked fine... I put it on very thinly and let it dry before applying several layers.
  3. I "souped up" my MKIV with a Weber downdraft carb, better cam and exhaust headers ... the clutch was slipping so I replaced that too.... The first time I made a... "spirited" start after that the first gear shredded.... So gearbox out again... I reckon the old clutch was slipping and making up for the weak first gear. When I started my current project I knew I was going to get almost 100 BHP and/or LB/FT of torque so I called Mark Field late of Jigsaw and he sent me a 1500 gearbox that he says should handle it fine as long as I make sure to check the oil and be careful off the line... We shall see... if this one blows I will likely go with an MX5/Miata 5-speed..
  4. My friend will be glad know.. he tends to find things out almost as fast as I do! Freaky!
  5. I will be needing these as I had to drill out some when tearing my Spitfire apart... Asking for a friend: If by some strange chance the friend may had damaged the thread in the door of drilling these out on his Spitfire, would it be OK to use some sort of nut with a lock washer or nylon locking nut assuming at least one screw is held in "properly"?
  6. My parents had a tradition of taking photos of the Christmas tree.... with nothing indicating the year...
  7. That's part of why when a 3-piece "targa" top came up for sale for my Spitfire I bought it. I want a hardtop in case we do drive it in mildly bad weather but I don't have a wall/ceiling with enough space plus I wanted it to be a one person job. The rear is mounted the same as a standard hard top and the "targa" tops are mounted on the hard top fronts with screws and bolts (I will try to swap them for wing nuts) and on the read part of the hard top. The removable sections fit behind the seats or in the trunk/boot. The guy who sold it to me said the previous owner complained of noise (whistling) but we will see when I get around to mounting it. It is also a type of fiberglass/plastic so it won't rust...
  8. My thoughts exactly! Usually the Stag makes an appearance on such shows given its supposed problems...
  9. I scanned for Triumph content... I think there was some new footage I have never seen before... Very little Spitfire/GT6/TR stuff .... I will watch it in its entirety later...
  10. McLaren (or was it Mercedes?) had the in F1 a few years ago...
  11. Thanks John, As it stands our Covid situation has been improving almost daily so there may be more participation than expected. I will be at the event because of a slot car (like Scalextric but 1/24-1/25 scale) so I will have time to poke around. I have a TR7 I race but I have to check if it is allowed in any of the classes. Sadly I didn't built it myself. I might get a TR3 together in time (depends on how the Spitfire project goes)... Like I said, Triumph competition won't be there this year but maybe next and I can try to to contact them. There may be other Triumphs there...
  12. Our last 3 Renaults have had that. One time though it got confused and all the bells and lights went off and it kept blinking "STOP THE CAR! DAMAGE WILL ENSUE!" and it would no longer engage... the manual said contact a dealer... I was over 300 km away from home and had no clue whom to contact. Then I noticed that the lever you pull up to engage the brake also goes down. So after trying a combination having the car running or not running, in gear/out of gear, foot on brake pedal or not etc. I discovered simply holding the button down cause the brake to "reset" and then it acts normally again. This is not documented ANYWAY and google didn't even know about it... Granted, part of my job is to test things are work because if someone can get something that can only happen one a thousand times it's me! We also had a problem with the seats that move automatically back in forth to make entry easier not moving far enough forward so shifting meant pushing with your tippy toes. I had taken the car in at least 3 times because of this but our local garage was not allowed to service the car anymore (long story) and it was a Sunday (Germany grinds to a complete halt on Sunday, I hated it when I moved here but now I I kinda like it).... So I crawl under and take a look and after eliminating the usual suspects I noticed 3 electric motors. Only one was perpendicular to the seat rails so I did the only thing I could do: Pulled its plug, waited 10 seconds and plugged it back in. Voilà seats work fine! Since I don't have to pay for repairs I can#t be upset that my company got shafted for it but that might explain why we're not allowed to use their services anymore...
  13. I get Freesat here so I will definitely look into it!
  14. Doesn't an electronic flashed help (=is required) if you convert to LED as well?
  15. If you contact Mark directly (e-maul can found in the eBay listing) he can work with you on shipping...
  16. Hope this is the best place for this.... As it currently stands, spectators are not planned BUT these things are changing fast AND if you are part of a race team you can come as well. More information is here: https://www.hockenheim-historic.de/en/ and here: https://www.hockenheimring.de/en/events/motorsport/bosch-hockenheim-historic/ It is also called the "Jim Clark Revival" though for some reason I find calling it a "Revival" at the scene where the person died a bit odd but hey, that's just me.... It is usually held mid April, closer to the anniversary of Jim Clark's fatal accident. Last year it was cancelled outright. The Triumph Competition group is usually there: https://www.triumph-competition.de/?fbclid=IwAR35yGg7vOL8QRVMBUf3JFnby8XbG-GfNG6yOB6mh4-W1H0Acn7EHkX4ECA But they won't be there this year... The event strives to reach the levels of the Goodwood Revival or classic car events at Silverstone or Spa .... The Hockenheimring is equidistant between Stuttgart and Frankfurt and there are other museums about technology (Speyer and Sinsheim) so it can be a nice trip with things to do around the area.. I will be there with my slot car (Scalextric) club (we race 1/24 scale scratch built cars) so I will be around ... If I can confirm a stronger Triumph presence I can contact your international branch about doing an article for the Courier (I have written about the event in the past) If they let people in maybe someone of you will come! (let me know!) I am fairly sure that things will be back to normal in 2022. Cheers...
  17. As Renaults go though, an Alpine ain't bad...
  18. It does. Seriously. You actually "learn" while sleeping specifically your brain commits things to memory for reproduction. When I was a teacher a student I caught sleeping in class used that as his excuse... cheeky bugger...
  19. That underside is WAAAY too clean! 🙂 Just kidding... actually it reminds me of the "last" Spitfire at Gaydon. "Last" only because someone told me there was something on an internet that someone had posted on a phone after hearing it on the radio that there was ANOTHER Spitfire where people had written all over the door cards etc. that this, in fact, was the last one ...
  20. And this whole time I assumed you meant a Renault! 🙂 😄
  21. I find Amazon worse than ebay.. at least on ebay if you poke around long enough you can usually suss out where the seller is really located but with amazon it is like a labyrinth...
  22. We were fixing the exhaust on my '76 Firebird at a friend of my Dad's place. It was dead of winter in Michigan so we had it all closed up tight. They are mostly talking and smoking letting me crawl around under the car getting dirty... between the dust dirt and smoke (from them and the exhaust) I stepped out for fresh air.... and they locked me out.... They finally let me back in but I don't know if he ever found out how his tires all got flat...
