  1. It is similar... with heat from a hair dryer you can get the vinyl to be almost like a fondant. Like I said, until i see it in the flesh I won't be sure if it is for me. One thing I do know is the surface has to be spotlessly clean. Any little bumps, pimples etc will show up. It also does nothing for rust protection so it will continue to rust underneath...
  2. If you mean the vinyl wrap: The approach is to hold the sheet as flat as possible and then "plunge" the overrider into it, as far as I can tell. I don't have pictures of the results yet...
  3. I have heard chrome vinyl wrap is better than nothing...
  4. There is one for sale in Beligum. Red, better condition the one in the video .... Let me know if anyone is interested...
  5. UJ installation, much like brake installation is full of double-entendres... grease, lube, nipple...
  6. There is a guy in the US who was a metallurgy engineer and he made a set of the best bolts, nuts, washers and felt he could find. The sets are expensive but I lucked out on the shipping having a US address in addition to my German one. I can link/ post about it when I get some free time (covid has hit us again...)
  7. I got a guy in the US to 3d Print a 1500/MKIV and GT6 MKIII body in 1/32 scale. He usually works in H0 scale. There is a pretty nice 1/25 scale GT6 MKII/Plus model. Might make a nice Le Mans Spitfire... There were 1/32 MKI/MKII Spitfire models out there as well as Le Mans Spitfires in that scale as well as a Stag...
  8. Mildly off topic: What is the thing next to the horn that looks like a dial? Is it to set the temperature an electric fan activates?
  9. Well guess what? I was planning on becoming a member next week but after such comments I am not so sure I would be welcome. Why waiting so long: 1. I wanted to see what sense of community there was. It is perfectly normal for people to test the waters and take their time to get to know things. Up until that comment I thought I knew... 2. I have had severe financial burdens over the past two years. My house was flooded, massive damage to the garden/fence, my dog and wife were diagnosed with an incurable, but treatable diseases 3. My son had a brush with the law (he was in a bad place at a bad time) that took ages to clear up. 4. Renovations on the house that had been planned finally took off and were of course 2-3 times as expensive as planned 5. Took the opportunity to visit my Mom whom I hadn't seen for 3 years because of Covid (trans Atlantic flights aren't cheap and when the travel agent screws up it is more expensive) 6. Electricity and heating oil tripled and doubled in in price 7. I was diagnosed with an incurable condition that they can't operate on for a few years as the replacement joint is currently experimental. 8. Mother-in-law got kicked out of her apartment so we had to do the move as she has arthritis in the shoulder and can't lift. She also just couldn't mentally handle it. 9. Brexit: It wasn't clear until just a year or so ago what it all really meant to be honest... I could go on.... I used the knowledge here to help a half a dozen Spitfire/Gt6 drivers get their cars back on the road and as money other classic car owners. I am also active promoting TSSC on other social platforms that I don't see many other "members" on. I actually used to be a forum admin so I am fully aware of the cost of running a forum. I don't disagree with a members-only section at all but the choice of areas seems odd to me. Taking my thread about the V8 Triumph 2000 and putting it in a forum I can't respond to just seems odd to me in many ways. I don't remember there being a section stating that anything I post becomes the property of TSSC but I could be wrong. Do I pay my fees? Not yet and i am seriously reconsidering doing so in the future. Do I contribute positively to the upkeep of the Triumph marque? I thought I did, but after seeing things handled here I am not so sure I should bother when people make broad assumptions and accusations that, had we been in a pub face-to-face I highly doubt they would have had the audacity to attempt. It is a pity because I had the impression that the "Board" and Admins had the best intentions in mind but I fear they have at least partially failed on that front. Had I become a member I would have offered my three decades of online marketing and interaction experience. Had I become a member I would have become even more active in promoting the club and its activities. That won't happen any time soon I am afraid unless someone can explain to me why my position and my behavior have been incorrect or out of order. Good day to you all...
  10. Well Brexit has been reduced to a minimum from what I have heard here in Germany. In fact, strangely, shipping and customs fees are sometimes cheaper than buying at local places. It almost looks like they are bending over backwards to get business in the EU..... Stuff does take longer and sometimes they make you go to the local customs office but for the most part it seems to be going as smoothly as it can. Mind you, I too would only buy in the UK now if it was at least 10% cheaper or was more readily available. There is just that added risk that if something went wrong getting it set right is just a hair's width more tricky.
  11. My post about a V6 triumph 2000 was moved to Spotted and now I can't do anything with it...
  12. I frequent a car podaost calls "Smith and Sniff" and they recently mused about our favorite car designer Michelotti. They mentioned a Triumph 2000 prototype with a Stag V8. Anyone ever heard of this? Does anyone know if it is still around?
  13. Many Germans would argue that Bavaria is not Germany...
  14. Our cars have cancelling indicators?!?! I always thought they stayed on to counter act BMWs not working EVER....:-D
  15. Did you guys grease your bushes? I saw a guy use a type of...er.. um. jelly and Teflon tape to keep his from squeaking..
  16. Could one in theory load up a grease gun with brake fluid?

    Synthetic Fuels

I remembered Top gear covering this:

    Synthetic Fuels

Hydrogen for personal transport is a non-starter. Always has been. that is why apart from Toyota everyone is leaving it in droves: https://www.linkedin.com/pulse/distilled-thoughts-hydrogen-paul-martin/ Like synthetic fuel we NEED green hydrogen, but we need it to make steel and fertilizer because last I checked people like to eat. Maybe for shipping or flight but for anything else it is a total waste of energy. This video explains how just trees won't cut it: And this video shows we nuclear is also only part of the solution if at all: The video is not perfect and they admit some of numbers don't take everything into account. Nuclear is probably dealt with too "cruelly" and fossil fuels are probably given a too easy row to hoe. Local and regional aspects play a role but they admit that as well. Batteries are not like oil. They can and will be recycled. 92-96% of the materials in fact and that without power from the grid. There are two places within 100 KM of me that do it. The problem? Not enough batteries yet. They are lasting longer they people expected. That will change though once people start crashing these cars in earnest. I have been tracking this all in earnest for over 10 years. I have noticed a trend of any technology that has been around for more than 20 years tends to be heavily subsidized leading to people making incorrect assumptions about how "easy" it is. Things like nuclear fusion, hydrogen, synthetic fuels etc.... The fact is none of them are easy. None of them are perfect. All of them have devils in the detail and it is all about what devil do you want to live with? Wind turbines occasionally killing a bird? Nuclear not being as cost effective but being stable? Solar being cost-effective but needing to be stored (in batteries)? Shoddy charging infrastructure (which by the way is most likely in the remit of your government to provide) with lower local emissions? I try to remain as objective as possible and I always assume I don't have all the information. But instead of relying on "news" I look at studies, listen to experts (and by experts I vet them based on their education, experience, breadth of work and not because someone else slaps an "expert" title on them). If you really want to see how things could be it will take hours to simply get a feel for how things "might" go. If you don't take that time any idea you have had based on your experience with no outside input is probably wrong unless you work in the industry. At the end of the day money rules the world. No one wanted a phone that can do what smart phones can do back in 2008 (some still don't) but the majority want one. Technology, whatever it will be will come whether we like it or not...

    Synthetic Fuels

There has been a lot about that here in the press as well. You will note that he did name a price. None of these companies will. They rightly point out that these are still more or less one offs and basically don't want to scare people away. I did some research but before I go on I like to preface my comments: 1. We absolutely need synthetic fuels. There are use cases where using any other power source is more or less impossible or at least not feasible. 2. We absolutely have to get CO2 out of the air. There is no way, even if all cars were EVs and we halved shipping and flights that we can stop the changes we are seeing. Sucking CO2 out has to be part of the equation. So while these companies won't state I do know based on other companies some numbers: 1. Currently CO2 that has been captured using renewable energy costs about 600USD$ per US ton. One ton can produce at most 100 gallons. So at best without taking anything else into consideration you are looking at at least 6 USD$ per US Gallon. This doesn't factor any all the other things that have to be counted for producing the fuel. I look at it like the cost of flour in relation to a loaf of bread or a whole cake. My guess is you are looking at a realistic price of at least 10 USD$ a US gallon. My thought process on that is fairly convoluted and I am no expert. It could be lower but I doubt it. Now there are places claiming they can get that cost down to 100 USD$ per ton within 10 years or so. Some even claim 50 USD$ in 15 years. So I really, really, really, really, really, really, really, really, really, really, really, really, really, really, really, hope they crack this as there are cases that make it absolutely necessary and it has benefits over such things as E10 for sure. But for all the other cases where there are better and cheaper ways of doing things I would not hold my breath.
  20. I posted in the other thread about road legal LED replacements ... Their light is different than halogen but I don't think they are half bad... Expensive though...
  21. There are road legal H4 LED replacements from Osram and Philips out there now. The light is a slight shade on the cold white side but not as jarring as Xeon halogen. Use only about 12-16 Watts depending on the model. Down side: The start at 120 of your favorite currency.
  22. Slightly off topic: Has there been any proof that the 1" rear cylinders were simply a case of rationalization and not an attempt to improve rear braking on 1500s? I am rebuilding my Spitfire using parts from MKIVs and 1500s and was going to use the longer 1500 drive shafts and cylinders in the rear and was always wondering about those changes...
  23. I don't want to start a BREXIT conversation but I also have noticed that a lot of UK places have lowered their prices to the point that it is cheaper than within the EU. I have a few theories as to why that might be but this is not the place... At the end of the day though as a consumer our jobs are the same as always Do your research and pick the supplier that gives you the best bang for your buck.
  24. When I wanted to by a torque wrench I wasn't sure which to buy because I wasn't sure what the best "range" was. So I presume this wrench will cover most of my torquing needs? Wheels, body fixings, gearbox etc...? I would need to do a conversion as a well.. For some reason I always get a vision of some some 17th century guy jumping up and down on a lever when I hear "Newton/meter".... My Wife, who asked me once why I would used shoes to tighten bolts. I asked what in the name of Sauerkraut she was talking about and she said she heard me talking about "pounding feet"...
