  1. Old layshaft cut down to just fit inside the box so it can drop down. But a piece of wooden dowel will do. I think it's about 18mm. Danny
  2. If you put the warning light in series with the reversing light then neither will light if one blows Danny
  3. That's definitely a mod. I did similar to my spit using these shoulder bolts. Drilled the hinges to suit. New pins would have been too loose due to wear.
  4. I used Waxoyl which has protected the car very well over the last 20 odd years I've have owned it. Comes in a can with a had pump and wand. You need to get the waxoyl hot otherwise its impossible to pump. The only downside is if you do need to do some welding you need a fire extinguisher because it's like a giant candle. 😁 Danny

    Worrying noise

It could be just one bolt. The other three could still be tight so the flywheel may still feel OK through the starter motor hole. Could try turning engine by hand to see if you can ear any knocking. Take the plugs out to make it easy. Or put it in 4th. And push it. Danny

That is strange . As you say it normally stays in one direction. Seems something is forcing it forwards. My money is still on flywheel bolts. Danny

Oops your right Cliff, for some reason I thought it was on the limit of 6. So 6 is well in spec. Danny

    Worrying noise

That's too much, the thing is with mine, the vibration also wore out the thrush washers and broke the front sprocket and woodruff key. This on a 20K engine. Although I did drive it hundreds of miles after I noticed the noise. It would be easy to remove starter motor and see if the flywheel is loose but I think you will have to take the sump off to replace thrust washers. Danny

    Worrying noise

Yes it was first noticed at tick over and then after awhile all the time. Danny

This sounds exactly I had on my spit. The fly wheel bolts had come loose. Take the starter motor out and see if there is any play. Mine started on the new Queensferry bridge and finally destroyed the clutch, starter motor and flywheel at John O'Groats. A nice 15hr recovery back to Essex.
  11. My old xtype jag had an electronic boot release, and if it failed they recommend to smash rear light, put arm through and pull lever to lower rear seat. Then crawl into boot and undo lock. Lucky it never failed. Danny
  12. I have speakers on the side behind the seats above the wheel arc and speakers at the back of both glove boxes, which are made of vinyl covered aluminium. Get a good around sound without actually seeing the speakers unless you look for them. Danny
  13. NS-FF-8-300 22/10 I would guess 300n Danny
  14. Mine are 70 cm long . Nothing on them to say what force they are. Danny
  15. I'll have a look tomorrow. Can't remember if they were labelled. I'll also check length Danny
  16. Put mine up on 4 wheel dollies which have curved profile to keep tires in shape. Gives me a chance to move car about in the garage . Although at the moment it's up on axle stands with the gearbox out so it will probably stay like that for a couple of months. Danny
  17. I had mine cut at Timsons Tesco. They had loads of Rover blanks. Danny
  18. On the battery isolator is there a small fuse yhat allows for auxiliaries., clock etc ? What happens if you remove the -ve terminal from the battery. Danny
  19. Didn't seem to make any difference to the handling of my spitfire when I removed it. Its main purpose may have been to force air into the radiator. Danny
  20. Just tuck it out of the way and forget. I also took my pdwa off and reverted to single line brakes. Danny
  21. No the spoiler is the valance. I know because I took the spoiler off my 1500 and got myself a mk4 valance. Can't remember about the fixings though. Danny
  22. I had the same on the Spit after parking outside while doing work on garage. It was under a cover but water / condensation left large milky staines. Nothing would get rid of them as the water seems to get in the cellulose. I was told to leave it out in the sun and within a day or so they had all gone. I now use a good wax polish which seems to do the job. Danny
  23. Yes that's the problem with vacuum, but I did find by putting grease over the thread helped stop this. Danny
