KevinR
I know about the problems with the new type 16 calipers, and would always go for a refurbished ones, but what about type 14 ? What is the current opinion regarding the quality of the new type 14 calipers ? Are they worth the £10 to £15 more than refurbished ones ?
Clive
No experience. But I would rather have a properly refurbished caliper than a cheap new one. My wife MX5 needs calipers sorting. New genuine mazda are £250 each, aftermarket well under £100, about the same as refurbed originals. Or a set of quality seals is £30 for the car set, and actually easy enough on the Mazda. I will hold off buying pistons until I have inspected the ones that come off.
Peter Truman
Trying to get Triumph type 14’s here in Aus is impossible I brought a pair off UK eBay but the shipper refused to send them so I did some extra research and found early Escort and some early Cortina’s used them I was lucky I got a pair locally very cheap! I got new pistons ex UK cheap the bores cleaned up ok bit of rust at the bottom which cleaned up, but there not too critical as it’s the pistons and seals that are important? I went for reconditioning over new for all the. Reasons quoted.
Patrick Taylor
I was going to refurb my own but in the end decided to go with new, despite some contributors on here feeling it was best to avoid them. I fitted new discs and bearings at the same time and have not had any problems with any of them.
Mark B
Any other experience with the repro type 14 calipers? I was intending rebuilding the ones off my mk3 Spitfire but despite all efforts the pistons are seized solid, so if I eventually get them out the bores maybe beyond it. Steve P
I bit the bullet and fitted BCC 4 pot calipers to my Herald during the front end rebuild. Along with a Vitesse master cylinder the brakes are a lot better than the standard type 14`s and take a lot less effort to stop. They fit on the original mounts but the backplate needs trimming a bit with tin snips. They come with EBC pads but i will be getting Mintex 1144`s for them. Peter Truman
With my Escort Type 14’s I had to revert to using a grease gun and grease to get the old pistons moving/out obviously one piston moved before the other so it had to be clamped until the other started to move The grease gun (Wanner) develops higher pressure than the air compressor. Cleaning out all the grease is long winded though.
DVD3500
Could one in theory load up a grease gun with brake fluid?
johny
works with gearbox oil for the trunnions so I think so but will be messy and I dont know if gun seals good for it long term....

Peter Truman
grease in the calipers or brake fluid in the grease gun your going to have to clean something out! The calipers were being stripped down for a full overhaul anyway.
