Andrew Palmer
Hi all. A quick question: I took apart my headlamps last week and found that the inner and outer bowls are pretty rusty. Is it a good idea to paint them - and, if so, does the assembly get too hot for regular paint when the lamps are on? Thanks.
Pete Lewis
Any simple aerosol or brushing black will work nothing special is needed Use a de rust followed by a primer then finish coat Pete
dougbgt6
Rust is the enemy! So yes, clean them up and paint. I would use standard paint and check them again in a couple of years!
Andrew Palmer
Excellent, thanks!
Colin Lindsay
You can get plastic bowls, which I never liked; I suppose they look the same and do the same job but I always preferred nicely painted metal originals.
Andrew Palmer
I agree! I saw the plastic bowls on the Rimmer website and thought ... nah! Spending a happy Sunday with wire brush and Kurust!
NonMember
The plastic ones are fine for a square-tail Spitfire. They don't seem at all good at holding the chrome rim on the round-tails.
rlubikey
I have the Mini plastic bowls, which have squared off backs. I cut holes in for suitably large rubber bungs and now, if a lamp should fail, I can change the bulb without a full strip-down. Well, that's the theory! Cheers, Richard
Badwolf
I'm sure that my spit is wearing the quartz lamp fittings off an old Toyota, including the back reflector bowl
