Holden/Isuzu Starter motor

A few years back I fitted one of the Isuzu/Holden starter motors to my Vitesse 6.
I bought it off Ebay
I had no idea if or how it would work till today.
New battery, plugs still in I turned the key for the first time in a very long time to get oil pressure up before I start her.
My first thought is I have damaged the engine as it turned so fast and freely unlike the old Lucas starters from memory.
Take the plugs out and she spins even faster so thankfully I dont have a bad engine.
In my search for the elusive oil pressure I was spinning the starter for a while and no sign of flagging.

The engine now runs and at present I wholeheartedly recommend the starter motor from a Holden Jackeroo/Isuzu Trooper2.6 litre petrol motor for our Triumph 6's
All the info is here, I did my wiring keeping the Triumph starter relay. Thank you Teglerizer for the info

Did you get the model number, Adrian?

I've had one of the uprated starters (Club supplied?) fitted to my GT6 for many years but with easy access to a mate's breaker's yard it would be interesting to see if it was fitted to any other model. The more, the merrier, and certainly cheaper.

The only problem I had was that it had to be fitted upside down, so that the drain hole was now on top, and after washing the car water got in and after a few years, rusted the insides. I had to strip it down, clean and grease everything, then replace with the drain hole blocked using the plastic end cap off a Biro pen.

Give it a go, Colin, but I fear that scrappers know that these are now sought after.  My local scrapper had a whole store room, full of starter motors and, with permission, I went through them all.  No joy.  The old scoundrel told me after that they pick them out and send them off to be rebuilt.

I came home with an entire box a few years ago, all different makes and models, but none fitted as well as I would have liked. They were all terminally rusty so no use to my friend, and once ruled out they went into a large skip for metal recycling. If I can identify the model then it's just a case of rummaging through large piles to find a match. I have a list of parts I want to find - Micra heater blowers for example - but he's closed due to lockdown and I can't get near the stuff. It would be a perfect time to rummage - no-one else there!

Seems possible that the same starter was used on the Vauxhall Frontera and Brava, and the Opel Campo(?) as well as the Isuzu. If I can get a good comprehensive list of applications from those you've posted, next visit to the scrappie will be interesting...

You are right Colin, Vauxhalls used Isuzu engines in a lot of their vehicles for a long time.

I think there are many starters that are similar, but won't fit "out of the box". Canleys, I think, otr somebody, used to offer a machining service. Loads of the high torque starters are the same bar the fitting parts. So you will need some measurements and probably a lot of luck. Take a starter spacer with you? And hopefully some measurements of the required pinion position.

A certain Dutch chappie who knows a thing or 2 reckons the denso "copy" starters are not too bad, but the contacts are poor quality. No idea how that works in practice, he has used contacts out of genuine densos to fix.

Meanwhile, I am shortly (ok, within a few weeks) to do battle fitting a late ford starter to my car, to replace the aged and struggling original. It sits an inch above the exhaust, so has a hard time. New one is a gear reduction starter from a Focus, "all" I need to do is cut and weld the bellhousing. Apparently it welds OK. Says a bloke on a forum.......
