Pdv
Hi, Does anyone know where I can get a replacement for the fibre board that I screwed over the handbrake lever. Or do you know what it is made of so I can source a piece. Thanks Steve
Pete Lewis
used to be called millboard a sort of flexible thin hardboard it only holds the gaitor/covers the front of the cable so a simpler method to stop it pulling thro the carpet cant be hard to make pete
Peter Truman
The millboard I've purchased over the years had been a lot thinner than the original, Can I suggest cardboard which can be thicker, and paint it on both sides with PVA glue which will soak in and strengthen it whilst still retaining its flexibility. Patrick Taylor
I was going to replace mine, but didn't in the end. I thought about using greyboard, which looks similar. I rather like Peter's suggestion of using PVA to reinforce it. Equally, you could glue two thinner pieces together as you fix it in place, effectively creating a laminate. The thickness of greyboard is usually measured in microns, i.e. 1000 = 1mm, so 750 - 1500 might be about right.
trigolf
I replaced mine with a sheet of plastic cut out of the side of an old plastic drum. The plastic was the same thickness as the old Mill board. It's flexible too so you can bend it to shape. I stapled the handbrake gaiter to it as per original. Colin Lindsay
I wonder if a sheet of strong millboard-type card was screwed into place to get the profile, then painted with fibreglass resin? Might be stronger than PVA?
Pdv
Hi all, Thanks for the replies. I have two Heralds and in theory should have two covers, one cover is from the complete Herald which is good and can be used as a pattern. As I am writing this I hope I have the old millboards from the one I am restoring, I can even remember where I stored them so I know where to look but think that they went in last clear out. Thanks again. Steve
Badwolf
I'm sure that I have seen a post somewhere about using plastic guttering as a base, but it was some time ago. The memory is going along with the enthusiasm.
PeteH
5", (122mm) Black plastic guttering Circa £6 for 2M. Should form nicely with a bit of heat from a Hair dryer.? Visit to an industrial building site might even get you an off-cut for free?. Pete
Pdv
RrectHi All, What I thought were Millboards were old rear 1/4 trim panels. They are hardboard, but are OK for what I want,I will put them in water to make them soft and then bend them to the correct profile and then either varnish or PVA them. Thanks for all the replies.
