Number one cylinder.

Now I know this sounds daft. But number one cylinder on my Jaguar is at the bulkhead (back of the engine). So, is number one cylinder on my Triumph Vitesse mk1 2 litre at the water pump end of the engine or the  baulkhead end?

It is as you say, at the water pump end.

Jaguars are odd in that number one is at the back. As Dave said Triumph and most other cars number one is at the front.

The Saab 99 used a Triumph Dolomite engine with cylinder 1 at the pulley end as normal. However, it was installed backwards with the gearbox in front, so yes, cylinder 1 did end up at the bulkhead.

or back to me and Commer TS3  or any opposed piston engine  on TS3

with 3 cylinders and 6 pistons  1 and 2 were the same 

timing marks to set the pump were on the flywheel
