  1. dave forgot to add twin 2" copper tail pipes fitted to a remember these 'Peco exhaust Booster ' you could drop a cog and take on a PA Cresta with ease it was also Bright red must dig out a picture and on £2 9s 3d a week as an apprentice you had to get out and get under guess when i bought the car for £65 in 1963 i might have been on £4 11s Whohooo
  2. my first car a 53 side valve mk5 Minx had broken rings , the previous owner had used his bicycle clips to fit them !!!! after a rebuild with washers under the valve springs and a carb from a unkown fitted to a sunbeam talbot race car head and manifolds she would pull 7k and tear diffs and halfshatfs then one day bang the crown popped off no3 but the rings were OK Ha ! well its raining Pete
  3. http://zenithcarb.co.uk/zencdcdsseries/?___store=zenith this says a lot but no help on your to have or have not gaske some starter valves are air bled rather than fuel metered I was just dreaming a bit pete
  4. you can refinish the ally faces with a fine 1200 wet dry , some oil on a flat peice of glass or flat surface,, just polish it up a little if this keeps leaking its fit a gaket or seaer to keep the fuel in the starter valve not on the floor most books dont show this in any detail but thats in the wet zone , so seal it up , Pete
  5. In the good old days of get out and get under they used to make a stepped ring to use in ridge topped bores pete
  6. Put you straight !!!! Didnt the Tower used to have a Rack, that should line things up .... pull...argh
  7. Even aldi and lidl have over covers from time to time but will have a headrest option.
  8. You carefully lift the pin enough to just touch the underside of the air piston Then lift it about 2 mm and hold it there note the sensation of change which only lasts a few seconds, so you hear the short up speed , or a light falter, or if its right feel nothing Its small lifts and small changes , or a hint of change , if rich a quick upspeed of around 50 rpm if weak a short falter , and a small drop /hesitation if you get the pin and just yank it up expect it to stop or misbehave its very touchy feely
  9. from my experience its more likely to be rubber , but never thought about alloy content , but you're right about travel, most would check for smooth and sound ,, not many have a bore gauge in the cupboard to check for ovality from thrust or bore wear Pete

    Fuel tank

bear in mind depending on car age the new tanks have the bayonet sender fixing. a six hole can be cut down to fit inside against the rubber sealing ring , did that on the Vit6. Pete
  11. 6J is base CD150 for GT6 and Mk1 Vitesse ( thames barrier choke) 6AC for mk2 vit and GT6 which would have CDS ( adds a choke valve) But if you have CDSE ( choke valve and temp compensators etc. then the only spec shown is B5AJ being a biased top adjust needle and more inclined to remind me you dont have pancake air filters do you ??? Pete
  12. some one was bragging on a car thread elswhere that they were still on the original tyres 40 years on mad or what and theres a disclaimer on some well used online supplies that clearly implies tyres may be pre 2012 and wont have a date marking $%&*())?????? What !!!!the heck even 2012 is pushing your luck with hardening compound and internal corrosion of the steel bands just had some uniroyal rain expert 3 on the picasso at just tyres as event dodnt do the best price , and he wanted to sell me some mabec ?? spanish with a lifetime warranty on failure good if you want a budget tyre maybe my view get the best you can and change them at 7 yrs its all you have between you and the tarmac

    Fuel tank

my 2000 had an after market locking cap , which poured out on corners, took me a while to realise it was a add on bayonet rim which needed its own seal between it and the tank.. a real completely useless design which wasted time sealing barrels and rings and washing paint when sat down level to get a good eye on where the heck is this leaking and spotted the obvious ,, it off gone and good riddance, just a simple oil filler cap now seals for life if someone wants the fuel so be it, its not the end of the world these days . Pete

    Fuel tank

If the tank is sound take it to a radiator/tank repairer they can often reform the wonky filler knecks its a frequent zone for wear and tear by nature of the pump knozzle ingress Pete
  15. The vac advance only gives better economy mainly when cruising , does affect acceleration , or performance in general. plugs will always show a more sooty deposit in situation of lots of acceleration like town driving the oil in the dash pot slows the rise of the piston and more fuel is pulled out the jet this would be the accelerator pump on a down draft carb, without it you will have a lot of flat spots when you open the throttles what needles are fitted ??? Number and letters on the boss at the end of the needle

    Fuel tank

Fitted a fitchets tank to my Vit6 it was a herald capacity think they only have tooling for herald tanks yes does not have the dreaded drain tube or the reserve set up, just one simple pipe no levers or olives to leak aamd yes it gains boot width. pete
  17. Dont need strobe,, as in other posts small bulb between coil neg and earth as soon as the electronic or points trigger open the bulb will light, then look for timing markers. marcus suggested test probe and croc clip , you know the small screwdriver tester any more fuel probs check the hoses in boot or undenesth are not sucking air The pump should have enough oomph to pull the fuel through an empty pipework.. Pete
  18. the hand prime wont work if the pump lever is on cam you need to turn the cam half a turn and try again. some after market pumps ....dont some float needles like to stay shut. did you try with the carb feed open to air. ? if you take the pump off there should be a well defined pahp pahp when you operate the cam lever , and the valves open close try sucking out a jam jar may prove the pump. Pete
  19. That might be just play in the planets reacting between the two wheels can you feel the jump or hear anything ?
  20. if you go to the home page and click the cars select the model then scroll down there are download buyers guides all a bit basic . what you need to do is get to one of our many area meetings and talk to owners local to you look in the Area directory for a meet near to you there is a Haynes how to restore your Spit.GT6 Herald vitesse etc which gives some good detail isbn 1 85960 867 1 Pete
  21. If you like your own coffee places like event-tyres and tyres on the drive come to you and do a good job ive used event many times very professional and van full of all the right gear, to fit balance etc on your drive , thats if you dont like tyre bays and draughty waiting rooms Pete
  22. keep fingers and everything else out the way or a trip to AE to remove the bar could be your next excitement you could add rent a crowd to hold a length of timber to lever/ keep the socket hard up against the nut so it cant fly off quick burst on the starter and its off put 1/2 and 3/8" drive battery 'impact wrench' ( not a impact driver) on your easter or good boy wish list... invaluable bits of kit ( not cheap) the 1/2 for big stuff and the 3/8 for whizzing off almost everything they save lots of time so theres time for a pint at the end of every job !!! Pete
  23. if youre on 4.5j wires you could probably come down a bit on width,, 175 is good on 5" + search theres a good few tyre /wheel comparision sites , (minty lamb seems failed ) just an idea Pete
  24. you need to jam the bar on the chassis rails, to hold/lock a clockwise turn of the engine depends if your on top n/s underneath o/s depends if the bar want to go up or ...down just jam it on something solid....be it chassis , bricks , old toilet or fence post .. your preferred choice ha ! surprisingly i dont see any torque figures in the WSM for these nuts only in haynes for the 1500 as 150lbft 6cyl is 90-100 lbft pete
  25. no idea what these guys are like they do a wide range of affordable tails eg. http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/UNIVERSAL-STAINLESS-STEEL-PERFORMANCE-EXHAUST-BACKBOX-18089-3-Mini-/151761649594?hash=item2355b2ffba:g:4uwAAOSwd0BVuR1g i took the wheel barrows off the Vit6 due to sounds like a hair drier and gravel grabbing and reverted to a club herald /1600 semi sports single which sounded absolute music, this was with 631 and 2" pipes , the silencer sleeved inside the long pipe Magic on song !!
