  1. From my problem with a ever sinking swinger on a saloon Gaz made up some shorter same stroke units quite cheaply but the downward trend was unstopable. Things just got worse with 10deg neg camber and no ride just a go kart , the spring kit was a disaster. so maybe have a look at the gaz website you can spec your own dimensions pete
  2. Mind you dont get taken for ride only to find it returns next week pete
  3. Yes , its possible to reface the stepped face back to a more original contour thus allows a feeler to slide in without bridging a wear step. just take them down to the wear face, some makes are not hardened, some are just tip hardend by gas flame or induction , even wet dry will attack the step with care and patience. Pete
  4. End float ....the taper roller bearings have room to move a small amount , the assembled distance between the roller races is bigger than the distance between the cones , if can measurs the push pull on the hub and witha wheel fitted will allow you to feel some slack rock at the rim pre load is when the races are closer together than the cones and there is some level of effort to overcome the friction , this is more for diff case bearings and pinions so when under load there is no shift of the meshing components in old money The force /effort needed to rotate the assy is measured in torque of lb ins. where as end float is measured in clearances 0.001" increments
  5. You have covered all the usual suspects. im just wondering if the liberal use of wellseal ( generally good stuff) may be allowing too much panting and the head is moving about more than normal the orig gaskets are normally fitted dry so they 'grip' mext time try a film of locrite 573 or similar along the side of the follower chest and rear oil feed this stuff sets, just an idea pete
  6. I did the same when we had a low swinger kit on the Vit6 took out 2 of the 3 rubber bump rings in the end the spring was removed , pete
  7. its the now it does it , and now it doesn't which is irregular and against the grain of a mechanical failure , these by nature start quietly and develop into a racket you cant switch them on or off at random still have the feeling this is a contact problem or a UJ . Pete
  8. 1500 has a lot of torque but renowned for bottom end failures and early wear 1300 is a more revy unit, lasts well , different sort of fun. pete
  9. If you go down that route you must check to see if the needles were changed to supposedly support the pancakes , with a std air box you need have the triumph specified needles pete
  10. My first new car was a 68 super imp ,, absolute flyer the area directory from the home page lists all the local meets with maps.
  11. I guess this is a rotaflex hub ? the spec is 0.0005 to 0.0025" thats quite small to measure , very few shims are on the shelf so can be hard to get dead right. not easy to mount a DTI this spec just makes sure there is no pre load and hardly any end float if it spins freely can you fit a wheel and check the minimal rock at the wheel ?
  12. Its often the basics that get out touch and the wallet drives the solutions into desperation bdst to remove the air piston and set the needles small plastic washer to an equal setting on each piston like almost flush with the base how stiff depends on the spag washer tapped in to hold the needle nut assy down. So set the needles mechanically in the same place then adjust together if needed There are a number of variations that means they realy dont have to be set exactly the same but close glad its running better and saved the myths of deep pocket syndrome remember these carbs would at the car age probably been flow tested before fitting but earlier wouls all be just set to predetermined mechanical settings and whacked on and they worked , no messing with mixtures or balancing . you get get less problems with std needles ,springs and std air box with a cold air tubes
  13. Check the solid mounts have not let the anti rattle plunger to fall out the passenger side its a small plastic plug fits in a open hole in the tube held in by the rubber mount left to drop out with most ally ones , available from a few suppliers , trick is hold in place with jubilee clip If the uj on the column is tired use a proper modern version ofetn called uprated think its same as fiesta etc. pete
  14. have seen a pair of home cooked powder coated black which looked good , if the old has pitted it can be hard and more costly to re chrome if they will even do it. have you tried chrome spray paint ??? Pete
  15. yes the wear normally gives instant access to the valve stem without any real problem on a sunny day with the rockers off a little careful work on a grind stone you can fettle the wear ridge off, the tips of the rockers are tough but not overly hardened its not hard to follow the contour of the wear face even with a block and some wet and dry have you found a paper clip or wire at 0.010" yet ?? dont get too carried away or overly concerned about these wear points , it not the end of the world .
  16. you can read into it as much as you want it too !!
  17. so its back to a hub bearing zonal noise , odd that its intermittent ??? odd noises , steel wheels with a cracked nave drum screws holding wheel away from the drum face stone trapped between drum and back plate UJ hub bearings none explain why it goes quiet Pete
  18. depends what square is on it but one trick is fit a socket back to front so sq is on the plug , use one the ratchet will fit in the AF Bi hex and a breaker bar with 3 shreaded wheat
  19. Richard no you dont have a life/running problem with dry bushes as yours assembled easily. this is c/o superflex note it is 'ASSEMBLY' Lubricant not a general working lubricant , so it assists assembly only . Pete Technical Information General Handling of SuperFlex Products Remove all dust, previous bush residue, paint or old grease from contact surfaces, prior to fitment. Ensure any original outer shell is not inadvertently left in place. A common mistake where the old rubber bush has unbonded from its shell. In some instances the outer shell is intentionally left in place, as described in models and descriptions on our price lists. Do not fit new bushes to worn, rusty, or distorted fittings. Worn components must be replaced. Lightly coat bush contact surfaces with assembly lubricant (where supplied) prior to fitment. Insert the stainless steel tubes (where applicable) after the bushes are installed into their housing. Immersing high-interference fit bushes in warm water, can assist fitting in a very cold climate. Before the final tightening, suspension arms must be at normal ride height. When replacing original componentry, ensure that all nuts and bolts are tightened to original manufacturer’s specifications. Bushes must not come into contact with alcohol-based solvents such as MEK, methanol, or methylated spirit.
  20. blimey this old nutshell continues to raise its head more times than what oil for dashpots ( sae20 or base 20/50) there are some GL5 that are yellow metal tolerant but if unsure dont use it where as all GL4 is yellow metal tolerant , the adatives in most GL5 can disolve bronze/brass. copper metals if used in arduous working and very hot places so things like baulk rings and thrust washers can suffer the diff has a harder life with oils than the gearbox and gets very hot due to efficiency losses so planet thrusts may thin down. i know from years of experience with truck reliability when one of our name changes involved a change of oil supplier and GL5 was introduced without prior concern and our older diff designs suffered thrust failures in volume ...nightmare , dont take the chance unless you have a specific GL5 oil spec thats compatible with hot yellows . Pete
  21. it depends on the base motor. some have bolt holes some have studs , they are generally recycled from a previous life from a modern which may have had a stud to aid online fitment on the triumph you need long long extensions and and start from up the exhaust pipe !!! or clever use of a variety of bent rings and ratchet rings , back to front sockets . and sticky platers Pete
  22. i would echo that sounds a plan , from memory the spacer converts the spigot location diameters to make a fixed location, not able to move around .
