  1. I would have thought those holes in the bonnet catch plate would be to allow for a lock to be added. Could it be for a Bond bonnet?
  2. I do wonder if a version of Dr Doolins tool could be made for the small chassis cars and if it would even be of any use. Thinking more about it due to the prop tunnel it is probably not a good idea. Adrian
  3. Have this problem with my dads vintage car, everytime it is the plugs fouling due to him starting the car and running it for a minute or two without driving it. Plugs swapped for dry clean ones and it starts fine. You sparkpugs could be failing under load of compression But I would replace the condenser Just ordered a sparkplug cleaner and a spark plug tester from Mr Bezos old company to have a play with.
  4. Nissan Micra fans fit, unsure what year but search on this site will tell you. I fitted one to my Vitesse but the car is not on the road. I think I got the wrong one as I had to modify the airbox slightly, you can see it in the attached file. I put a filter on the fan air intake, I assume it will confuse people. Peter you are asking an electrician a mechanical engineering question🙃 As long as the shock is centred and you do the bolt up in the bottom eye so you get no deflection it looks like it should work. If you used it like I do on my one just slipping a bolt through with out winding a nut up then I imagine it could all deflect and get nasty. In these situations I always ignore Colin Chapman. Just remember there is a decent amount of force used when compressing the front springs. Adrian
  6. I always thought a Triumph Rocket 111 motor (2300/2500) would go well in a small chassis Triumph as long as it is not too tall. Keeps the name correct as well. Not many cheap Rocket 111 motors down here. To the OP MGF wheels are the same PCD and if alloys arent your thing then the spare wheel is a steel space saver 14". Plenty of small chassis cars about running MGF wheels. I had a friend running a Daimler 2.5 V8 in a Mk4 with the Triumph diff. He would swap the diffs every second weekend when racing the car, it was a very very fast car in practice days. Was two cars behind on a the road when we heard/felt the diff blow on one trip. It was when he fitted nitrous that it started to get interesting. Rear suspension was pretty much standard Mk4 Spitfire. Car eventually ended up with a DOHC Isuzu motor. Adrian

  8. There have been plenty of big saloon Triumphs converted to Utes here in NZ. This is one I saw over many years in a paddock south of Hastings in Hawkes Bay. It is long gone. No idea where this one is but it looks like it has rear chassis added to it. I wonder if it is sitting on a TR6 chassis😉

  10. t-stag are you sure the window mech is held on with welded pins? They have an e clip and a leather washer on the back. It shouldnt take that long to strip a door down thaough I do admit they can be fiddly. AFAIK the doors differed very little between the first Herald and the last Vitesse. Only real trick is getting the 1/4 glass into the door and you need to wedge the door open a bit.   11. Personally due to all the faff getting to the welsh plugs on the 6 cylinder engine I would replace all of them and use brass ones with a smear of shellac. You have no way of telling if they are original, the last 6 cylinder blocks are over 40 years old. And before you put the manifolds back on top the water up to make sure none are leaking and let it sit overnight/weekend/week☺️ Adrian
  12. Made mine as well but use the bottom eye fixing. I just figured that is the way the shock works so the spring compressor can do the same thing. Built it with some scrap channel and purchased threaded rod. Welding the nuts to the top of the rod means I can use a ratchet or rattle gun and not worry about the thread protruding through the nuts, like one of Pete Lewis. Used it to fiot the GAZ shocks and will probably gather dust till I get onto the Mk2 CV🙄
  13. I tried using bike/kayak winches but they never got high enough for me to work under so I use two ratchet straps per kayak and bike know live on their wheels

    Offset pedals

    Being blessed with size 14UK feet I have tended to use the side of my feet whilst driving. Wears out the floor mats quicker but it means I dont hit multiple pedals at once. 1935 Lagonda Rapier I could hit all 3 pedals at once, that had a central accelerator with clutch to the left and brake to the right. Got it sorted and accelerator is now in the proper place and the other pedals have been spread so they are not a close as they used to be.
  15. I started reading this post with jealousy as I have only seen a Vitesse with a hardtop once and that was when I was 15 some 41 years ago. Not very common here in NZ. Then I saw the prices and thought the softtop is fine here in NZ and anyway the Mk2 CV is still in need of replacement everything so hardtop is way down the list. When Rhyna had a Mk1 MX5 I bought a 150kg electric winch and using seatbelt webbing loops it allowed her to fit and remove the hardtop by herself.   16. I have seen one CKD NZ Vitesse but more might exist. I believe they where special order for company bosses etc. They would have been built at the Nelson factory with its dirt floor. NZ built Triumphs have a 3 prefix. Did Oz built Heralds have extra body strengthening? I seem to recall reading that they did, unless that was the transition from Mk1 chassis to Mk2
  17. I think I have a saloon fan on my 1600, its plastic and yellow. But I did stick the boss in the lathe and turn it down a bit. Adrian
  18. Left foot braking confuses modern cars especially when you try use the accelerator as well. I am on my third turbo dieseled vehicle and when you try spool the turbo up and apply a bit of brake the ECU’s disagree with each other and leave you floundering. This can be disadvantageous when attempting to exit an intersection briskly. Adrian

  20. Thicker oils for modern cars are hard to come by. VW for example specs Envire+5-30W with all the additives required for modern emission standards. As these cars are getting up in mileage the engines start to wear but a thicker weight oil that matches what the manufacturer states does no exist. Unless oil companies come up with thicker oils then these cars will be scrapped which is the car manufacturers ultimate plan. Or owners remove emissions devices and run dirty and potentially illegal vehicles. Adrian

  22. Clutter needs to be refreshed other wise it gets stale and we can then find things we misplaced. By clearing your bench therefore refreshing the clutter we have a chance to newly misplace items and spend hours trying to find them but in doing so we come across other items we had forgotten about. I think the modern interpretation of this is when we start to research something on the internet and then fall down a rabbit hole and find ourselves looking at stuff we never knew existed.
