  1. "Black flash and Vitesse front give the Herald huge road presence".... Does this mean that they believe either this car is a Herald with a Vitesse front end, or else the entire Vitesse range was just a Herald with souped-up bits added rather than a car in its' own right? I used to get the same with the GT6.. "It's a modified Spitfire..."
  2. Did you spot the mistake in that article?
  3. If you mean the back box, then I've just polished mine, refitted after body work and it was too dirty not to take the chance to clean it up. If you mean the entire exhaust from front to back... you need a cure. Quickly.
  4. Yes, a single-dial 1200. They originally had the black speedo as a single gauge, but I bought quite a dark dashboard a few years back and reckoned the white gauge would look nice against it. Problem is that there are stains on the face and the paint is quite crumbly, so any kind of cleaner takes it straight off.
  5. +1 to Gary, an impact wrench will take it off in seconds. Can you get it to a local tyre centre, they'll usually have an air-powered setup and may loosen it for you. I had the same problem with a crank nut on a 1500, days of using breaker bars, force, heat and oil, all overcome in 20 seconds with an air impact gun.
  6. Black. Having said that, don't ask me if it was matt, or gloss, or semi-gloss (I suspect gloss)... but no doubt someone will confirm.
  7. I've looked at mine Rob and it's definitely the steering joint; you can see the end of the shaft move in and out. Only a 1/4 inch or less but still worrying.
  8. Happened on both my first Spitfire and my GT6 MK3. No matter how many times the sprayer resprayed the new panels they faded very quickly, and it was no doubt down to his technique - he was no professional by any means but could spray motor bike helmets, and tried to touch in both cars in my old garage. Both spitfire sills, and GT6 rear wing faded very quickly, within days, and whilst he tried to fob me off that they needed cut back, it never helped. It probably means the paint has not been applied correctly, either through incorrect mix, technique or temperature. I spotted my old GT6 some years after I had sold it and the rear wing was a nightmare, with the current owner attempting repairs or top coats when it should have been stripped right back and restarted. Incidentally when my GT6 Mk1 was professionally sprayed it arrived home looking quite orange, but then faded to a still-bright signal red that has lasted for years now. But: sorry for hi-jacking the thread, I have a few old magnolia Herald speedos that I'm debating using, if I can clean up the face or as a last resort, replace. Problem is that i can't find any kind of cleaner that won't remove the figures too, hence my interest in these superb looking gauges.
  9. Happens on my GT6 all the time. I really must tighten it up, or replace...
  10. I'd write what I think but it would take too long so I'll condense it right down - stunned. Those are superb. You can't leave us like this - how was it done?
  11. Lol happens to us all! Hammerite is ok - up to a point - but I never liked it. I used a great paint a few years back - PJ1 Fastblack - which they claim is 'Porcelain hard' and I must admit that once it's on nothing seems to touch it. I used it extensively a few years back with gloss black over for the shine (The PJ1 I used is matt) and it's lasted very well on my 1200 side valences. You can get matt, gloss, engine and case paint and exhaust paint up to a variety of temperatures.
  12. They fit a variety of vehicles and are accordingly forty prices. Depends on whether you require genuine originals, repro, or used. Being lazy this morning I'll just copy and paste the application list: "Lucas type rear tail light side reflector. This is a new replacement part that looks strikingly close to the original Lucas types - Replaces Lucas, Triumph and BSA part numbers 57111 & 99-1030. Fits Triumph 500 & 650 Unit Twins (Bonneville, T120, Daytona, T100, T100C, Tiger, T90, Trophy, TR6 & TR6C) from 1968-1970. Fits Triumph Trident & Trophy TR25W from 1968-1970. Fits BSA Unit Twins (Lightning, Thunderbolt, Firebird, Royal Star & Spitfire) from 1968-1970. Also fits BSA Starfire & Rocket III from 1968-1970. Please refer to your parts catalog for proper fitment." £11 on eBay is the cheapest I've found so far but will keep looking; there's a pair of older versions (used) for £25. https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/LUCAS-TYPE-RED-REAR-TAIL-LIGHT-REFLECTOR-BSA-A65-B25-TRIUMPH-99-1030-19-0943/301803335721?hash=item4644e17029:g:qwgAAOSw4xJdwtrB
  13. Has anyone tried the Prestone stuff they sell in Tescos? It's reduced by 50% to £3, so am interested for both the GT6 and the TR7.
  14. DR is Dolomite 1500 - my 1850 box is stamped WR or WM, I think - but no clue as to the other number.
  15. Used to see them a lot when I was young; nowadays the left over ones go on classic runs with the rest of us!
  16. Hammerstein hasn't been the same since they removed Rogers. Even Hammerite isn't a great finish either.
  17. Does it sound anything like this? WOO-Han! WOO-Han! WOO-Han!
  18. True! Forgot that... There's always summat.
  19. Mine is also angled up; I was able to unscrew this black filter and replace with a new one earlier in the week without any bother or hitting any obstructions.
  20. Something like this might do - 42mm, but with an angled hole in the middle for the fuel pipe. It's a Mercedes fuel injection loom bush, part number 1079971581. I need to locate one before confirming if it's any use.... so off to the breaker-mate's premises on Monday...
  21. I've been looking at exercise mats for all sorts of gaskets, particularly those thicker ones round the heater. Darling daughter however won't let me cut bits out of hers. The cheap ones are suspect in that they may not be waterproof, and the better ones are too expensive to buy, just to cut holes in...
  22. Best thing to do is to use the real thing and have the entire car made in solid silver... you won't get a finish like THAT from paint alone!
  23. As Pete says he used to have one like that, but then he 'sold her to get the 2000'... and so doesn't have one no more.
  24. Spot on for Heralds as well, Doug - on the front crossmember just behind the steering rack. The Vitesse engine will overhang this one, true, but with a good torch and mirror you can at least see if it's there, although not what's on it.
