  1. I found that the fuel gauge was also reading high when I thought the car was overheating all down to a knackered stabilizer.
  2. If you have to remove the guard your using the wrong tool !!
  3. I have found that if you keep topping up the oil to the top dipstick mark the engine does use more oil. Try monitoring the level and only top up if it gets below about half way between the two marks. When topping up don't go right up to the top mark.

    Oil change

Or how about one of these http://ezoildrainvalve.com/faq.html
  5. Marlin roadsters with the Ford tank suffer with this problem, when gauge reads ¼ full the tank is actually empty. I found out from another member that installing a 15 ohm resistor from Maplins in series to the feed from the gauge to the sender unit puts the gauge about right.
  6. Squirt a drop of Redex or oil in the carbs with the engine running and watch for the escaping smoke.
  7. Not sure if this will help! I have two old oil pumps one from a Mk1 6cyl and the other from a 1500 4cyl but not sure which is which?? With the inner rota installed in the body of the pump the protruding shaft is 120mm on one and 92mm on the other. From tip of shaft to top of pump body. However the longer one has a female slot to engage with the drive and the shorter one has a male blade. So one assumes the drive gears must also be different.
  8. Hi looks a brave project. Have noticed the side rails on Vitesse's normally have a reinforcing box cap on the inside at the back for about 10 inches. Which I assume braces the chassis. I know you have it painted but they would be easier to make up and fit now. All the best Ben
  9. Another possible cause is that the little short cable inside the angle drive is too long and has no free play. You may need to use two washers between the outlet and the angle drive.
  10. I wouldn't trust the bathroom scales mine over read by loads :-)
  11. You need to release the clamp(two bolts) at the bottom of the cover that holds the column then the cover just lifts away from the location point at the top.
  12. Just a theory!! ..... The main load is one point at the bottom of the rocker shaft but the load point on the rocker is moving and spread over a larger area. You should be able to assess the rocker wear by sliding it along to another none worn part of the shaft.
  13. That's why on a Vitesse the front rocker cover fixing should be a bolt not a stud and nut.
  14. When assembling the trunnions onto the upright it pays to remove the grease nipple or blank in the upright to avoid getting a hydraulic lock before screwing fully home then back off to a full working position as described by Pete.
  15. I agree with John, not so sure the shock absorber mounts will be up to taking the spring loading as well as the shock absorber. The loading will be all one sided on the upright.
  16. You could think about using a Vitesse steering rack that is geared slightly lower so you need to turn the steering wheel a bit further for the same action at the wheels.
  17. Clive you could be right as the proper GT6/Vitesse workshop manual shows an actual photo of a rear brake set up and the shoes have rectangular slots for the lever so the "H" plate would not fit in. But if the shoes have the taper in the slot I think the "H" plate would improve the action. Found the part listed in a Marina parts book as 37H 3075
  18. Where the operating lever for the handbrake acts against the shoe there should be a little "H" plate that sits in the hole in the shoe. This takes up quite a bit of the action which in effect would shorten the cable action. Problem is this part is not shown in the manuals or spare parts catalogue and often goes missing when the shoes are exchanged.
  19. Surely if its a Vitesse box the input shaft is longer than the heralds
  20. Some of these gauges have a little coloured plastic dome over the bulb mounting usually green to give a coloured back light. If the bulb has been too powerful or perhaps its just time the plastic may have become discoloured.

    Circlips

If your fitting circlips to a piston the opening should be at the bottom(6 Oclock) and never to the side (3 0r 9 Oclock)
  22. Check the length of the new sleeve tubes against the old originals you shouldn't have to distort the upright.
  23. If your stuck for a piston ring tool, careful use of a large jubilee clip works OK best of luck with the rebuild.
