  1. yes Triumph saw fit to insulate the bulkhead and gearbox cover so thats got be maintained if not improved. With the gear lever they went for an isolating joint on the single rail units but thats difficult to replicate on the 3 rail...
  2. If the cover is getting warm it doesnt really matter whats causing it youve got to do something about it! And even if its not theres got to be some sort of insulation just for the noise😞
  3. of course noise is something else though!
  4. yes fraid theres no solution for pressure drop except a bigger bore hose😲
  5. ha the pinnion in those must have been the size of a pencil!
  6. Think of a closed system, like a pipe and pressure gauge, as a balloon Dave. With a balloon you can stretch it out as long as you like and to any shape you like but the pressure will be the same in all parts of the whole thing. However an open system with a flow through it like a very, very long hose can have a high pressure at the entrance and yet still only trickle out at the far end because of the pressure drop along the length...
  7. Certainly sounds like the 4.55 diff would have been a good idea there!
  8. The low oil pressure being a good indicator of bearing wear matches my own experience on the Vitesse and now I will always investigate it rather than run the risk of bearing failure and subsequent crank damage...
  9. Is Hong Kong hilly? Plus maybe the cars were more likely to be fully loaded over there....
  10. Ah but that probably had broken strands of wire which yes act like ratchets so no amount of lube is going to work....
  11. Think I know what I'll be using when I next take my head off but yes hopefully it'll be someone else who finds out whether Molyslip have lied😄
  12. Hi Wim, theres another thread on here about the condition of a Spitfire engine and I thought youre probably the world expert on their engine longevity😁 So how many miles do you think youre likely to get out of bearings, the oil pump and then the crank itself before a regrind is required (assuming the bearings havent failed)?
  13. This is what their website says and it sounds pretty useful to me...
  14. Probably just a good coating of copaslip or similar would do as thats exactly the use its intended for...
  15. What mystifies me is that the head starts to move so as to give a gap for cutting the stud but then refuses to go any further! You would think any movement and the bond between stud and head has been broken😤
  16. Out of interest, what threads were used on older Triumphs before 1960s?
  17. As I say blag a strobe if you havent got one and see the timing at various revs - that would at least show if your dizzy is miles out...
  18. yes probably need one of those steering wheel knobs to bolt on😩
  19. I think that the manual figures give so much leeway (eg. more than 3º at some revs) that a rolling road and professional set up is probably the only way to really optimise your cars ignition timing...
  20. You should be able to easily check if your dizzy is within the quite wide range of limits listed in the manual using a strobe and friend👍
  21. Oh nooo not the engine mounts! If originals they can look perished but are still perfectly serviceable while the pattern replacements can come apart quite quickly😒Definitely hang on to the old ones just in case....
  22. ok but I cant see theres any length adjustment available at all. The nut at the top must be done up tight to hold the top of the damper against the top spring plate otherwise the it will be loose and possibly damage itself. If you use a compressor on the spring it will come free of the end plates as the damper being gas pressurised will stay fully extended. I think those shocks have a combined rebound/compression damping adjustment - many have found they can end up making the ride quite uncomfortable so leave the setting on minimum...
  23. Are you sure your shocks are adjustable for anything other than damping? Spax do different types and the length adjustable ones have a threaded collar that needs a C spanner to turn....
  24. I wonder if there isnt differences in dimensions between cars and so the tank is a tighter fit in some than others. Still the tanks went in and I would have thought, for pressure testing purposes, with the drain plugs already fitted. However I dont recall that folded seal plate on my mk1...
