  1. Wait I'll see if I can dig out the photos🤢
  2. yes think thats the only way to calculate it. Otherwise brim tank and it will expel excess coolant on heating to draw air back in when cooling and the cold level is then what should be maintained?
  3. I had a fancy dress outfit once with a rubber tail!
  4. Out of interest how do you work out what level of coolant to fill the header tank to? Too little air and the expansion of the coolant on heating will raise pressure enough to lift the cap while too little and the pressure wont be high enough to stop the coolant boiling in the hottest areas...

    Compression test

It must be refering to electrical pumps as theres no practical way of isolating a mechanical one. If youre going to spin the engine on the ignition switch it is a good idea to disable your spark by disconnecting the negative wire(s) at the coil...
  6. I would guess the brushes are worn in the alternator. Its nearly always this especially if the ignition light stops going out progressively (brushes gradually make poorer contact). Its an easy job to replace them although a lot of people bin the complete alternator perhaps worrying that the bearings will also be worn...
  7. Must be a bit of a rare beast though, an auto TR7? Maybe more in the US...
  8. Yet Peters went at 2 years old and now we've got replacement ones doing it as well!
  9. Apart from machining I wonder if the local heat treatment to obtain the surface hardness for the inner needle roller bearing (non roto) is the cause of the failure especially when it occurs inboard of the drum backplate...
  10. Just thought of course there will be some drag when turning just one wheel so yours could be normal. If you turn the propshaft both wheels should turn equally and with minimal drag....
  11. Thanks Colin, yes I suppose we're not really talking precision engineering here and full tooth mesh isnt too important😁
  12. Heavy drag with drums removed is worrying and needs to be investigated. Is it both sides? Have a good look at the shafts to make sure theyre not rubbing on anything but it seems like it could be something common to both sides like the diff...
  13. Think Ive got it as theyre not gears but worm and wheel so within reason you can increase or decrease the number of teeth on a wheel of the same diameter without affecting their engagement with the worm too much👍
  14. I just cant see how it can be done by changing just one of the two gears. Surely a different number of teeth on one gear changes its diameter and as the spacing of the gears is kept the same then the other gear has to change diameter to keep the teeth engagement the same - or am I missing something?
  15. Can you confirm Colin that you had to change both the pinion an mainshaft gear as a pair?
  16. Ah I did think you meant Triumphs US gearboxes but anyway Triumph did go the common speedos in the UK at the end (all 1000TPM) so I was just pointing out a possible disadvantage with that arrangement...
  17. The thing is its not as straight forward as changing just the pinnion is it? Its internal drive gear on the mainshaft must also be different so if you buy a replacement gearbox youve got to make sure its suitable for your diff ratio....
  18. yes when you read up on the 3 cylinder design its not so nice especially in larger sizes but they seem to have overcome the main problems and theres certainly some advantages to be had....
  19. Tempted to take a saw to the Vitesse...
  20. Must say I do like the sound of 3 cylinder engines!

    Coil

I wonder if it had some sort of electronic ignition which has now been removed without the wiring being returned to its original set up? Trouble is more connections equals more possible failure points...

    Coil

Think that might be the other wire in the photo that then connects to the black wire from the -ve of the coil. Itll work but a strange way of doing it...
  23. yes that might be a difficult sell...
  24. Yes you could regret damaging a perfectly good tank. If your not getting much debris in your fuel filter I would think you havent got much of a problem. Dont forget that corrosion needs oxygen of which there shouldnt be much in the fuel tank😮
