daverclasper
Hi. I have the paper/card gasket, though is worth putting a thin spread of sealant on on mating surfaces? I have some Mannol red stuff that dries as a flexable plastic/rubber thingy and also blue Hylamar and some Stag well Seal (commonly used for oil seals) Cheers, Dave
Clive
A smear of blue hylomar is your best bet. Or wellseal, but that is tricker stuff to use. Not a silicon type of sealant, too thick.
Nigel Clark
I use a thin smear of silicone on both sides of the thermostat gasket, preferably Reinzosil. Belt and braces perhaps but it works! Nigel
Iain T
I used Wellseal and the gasket. All good so far. I cleaned up both surfaces as best I could but they are quite corroded. Iain
DerekS
I swap between summer and winter thermostats. I've tried the Klingersil gaskets from Moss and wasn't impressed, had a couple of events with "gasket creep", so back to using a standard gasket with a thin smear of Hylomar on both faces. No problems. Derek.
Stratton Jimmer
I make my own from gasket paper but use blue hylomar to ensure the seal.
Pete Lewis
do make sure the recess is fully cleaned and the stat is fully located before you tighten the Hsg. its easy to find you have trapped the rim and bent the Hsg to aid refilling and air locks always use a stat with a jiggle pin in the rim if its not got one drill a 3mm hole in the rim to leat air bypass on refilling Pete
68vitesse
Some years ago I flattened the thermostat housing on my Vitesse using wet and dry on a piece of thick glass as it was distorted and never sealed properly. Well worth checking how flat it is. Regards Paul

daverclasper
Thanks Guys. The current cover was thinned out with corrosion and the mating surface very narrow and has now started leaking. Bought a good used one off good old Mick dolphin a while back, so now time to fit
