6 cylinder spin on oil filter adapter, seals/s replacement

Always found a big screwdriver and hammer always worked with a reluctant spin on filter.

Bought a spin on conversion for my Vitesse many years ago, pick date 02/08/06 on box never fitted it or had a problem buying original style filters.

Is it one of those unnecessary must haves?.

The GT6 filter and housing looks the same but GT6 is thinner for some reason, believe it is access.

Regards

Paul

Had mine installed on the vitesse like this for years with no problems. Goes just below the oil pressure relief valve but with enough room to undo it before hitting the chassis rail, maybe at 7.30 or 8 oclock position.

The original filter chamber was just so big and must empty on shutdown (otherwise there would be a lot of oil dumped when undoing it) which of course must take longer to refill on a cold start. OK if your engine and pump are tip top but makes for a painful wait if not....

Had a spin on filter on my Vitesse since 2009 when the new engine went in,fwiw i use Valvoline VR 1 and Fram filters from an Escort and have great pressure from cold start instantly and when hot.It sits as Johnny says at about 7-30-8 o clock.

For removal i have one of these and its a doddle to change:

That's how mine was and found it was a bu**er to get the filter off. It must have been the engine builder who over tightened it. The screwdriver and hammer technique wouldn't budge it. I have changed the filter a few times before and always found it an awkward angle to get much purchase and the three prong tool doesn't have enough room to rotate before it hits something.

Removed the Mocal spin on filter adaptor from my GT6 and replaced it with an original style bowl years ago (albeit from a Vitesse, not a GT6, so the larger version). I always found I had to remove the adaptor plate to get the spin-on filter off - too much hassle!

I understand the GT6 filter bowl was smaller than the Vitesse owing to standardisation for LHD and RHD models - steering column clearance was needed for the LHD cars.

Steve, I've put my filter back to where it was as you say 7.30/8 o'clock. Looking at the various clamps some are cranked some are straight. Is your clamp straight as picture?

Hi Iain,

My car is in a lockup about 20 minutes away so i can`t get a picture, but yes i got straight grips, I think from Halfords but memory could be failing. The filter is fitted at as much angle as i could get towards the chassis to allow removal of the filter without disturbing the housing. I can get the grips on the filter to start unwinding it no problem. I guess some filters are longer than others but the ones I use are fine and sit about 45 degrees.

As i said I don`t gorilla it that tight anyway as it`s unnecessary.

yes theres been discussions on here and elsewhere about different length filters that can be used to allow the adaptor to be as vertical as possible. I seem to remember you can get down to one under 60mm long from a Kubota digger which of course has less filtration area but as some of our cars do only a few hundred miles between changes thats not a problem😁

most of the  small chassis  cars  service schedule say change filter every other oil change

I wanted to change it as I've done nearly 1000 miles since the engine refurb. Why do they make the filter cans with a gloss smooth finish? A textured finish would be much easier to grab and hold!!

Iain, get a filter with flats on it around the end and use one of these. Simples!

Thanks I've seen the lower black tool. The club and I think most cans have flats at the end I could start a collection of filter tools.....!

that halves the struggle that some have !!!

I've often wondered, if they could go more than that. There won't be that many particles in such low mileage, I assume?

There is supposed to be a risk that the filter internals can disintegrate if used for an excessive time so just on that basis its a good idea to change it. Mind you I dont know if thats true or something invented by the filter manufacturers....
