BeerBellyBaz Posted November 11, 2014 Report Posted November 11, 2014 Hi there, Apologies if this isn't the correct forum to post this request but, does anyone have an aluminium bell housing for a Herald 'box that they'd like to get rid of? If not, can anyone advise which other Triumph models might've had a compatible one fitted? Many thanks in advance, Barry
thescrapman Posted November 11, 2014 Report Posted November 11, 2014 BArry There are a few versions of the Alloy Bell housing, from an almost smooth case, to an Alloy version of the fully ribbed cast iron one. They were just fitted to the first few years of Herald orginally. Canley sell a modern copy of the latter, but it is also suitable for a single rail gearbox. Be careful of people confusing a Vitesse/GT6 one for a Herald/Spitfire one. They are very cheap! The early almost smooth one and the medium ribbed ones are prone to cracking. All versions can be expensive, £100+ For the true "enthusiast", you can get an all alloy bell housing and casing combined, is 3-synchro only, and can be fitted with a Spitfire OD mainshaft, to allow a D-type on the back. They are very light, and very expensive, for racers only really. Cheers Colin
BeerBellyBaz Posted November 11, 2014 Author Report Posted November 11, 2014 Thanks for the prompt replies gents, Canley are out of stock at the mo' and (to be honest) I'm not mad about the idea of paying £300(ish) if I can help it. Hopefully someone's got one stuffed under a sheet in their garage somewhere. Barry
KevinR Posted November 11, 2014 Report Posted November 11, 2014 Barry, Quite a few people have them stashed in their garages (or lofts) but are unlikely to want to part with them unless there is a significant quantity of beer tokens involved. They do occasionally come up on ebay - expect to pay between £100 and £150 when one does. The GT6/Vitesse ones are much more common, as all GT6 and Vitesse gearboxes were fitted with them - but they don't fit a 4pot engine so they are no good for your needs. 1
BeerBellyBaz Posted November 11, 2014 Author Report Posted November 11, 2014 Kevin, Beer tokens (or the real thing) I can do. I'm in the final stages of organising the Caterham Beer Festival (21st/22nd Nov) so I'm awash with the stuff! Over 4000 pints coming in next week. Regards 1

You'll probably have to change the top plate for a remote one (the rearward extension) - off your old gearbox for example. Can't say how strong they are, but the engines of the time only made about 35bhp! Richard PS: No, mine's not for sale I'm afraid!
BeerBellyBaz Posted November 12, 2014 Author Report Posted November 12, 2014 Thanks for the info Richard, But saying you've got one that's not for sale is just plain mean ;-) Are you sure....? Regards, Barry
Chris59 Posted May 12, 2018 Report Posted May 12, 2018 Using the "search" faciilities, I've found this subject, who bring an answer to my question : from which model of early Standard/Triumph could be coming the all alloy gearbox I've in my sheds. Thanks !
Pete Lewis Posted May 12, 2018 Report Posted May 12, 2018 To search archives or grey matter you need to get the stamped number prefrix off the case top left face Pete
Chris59 Posted May 12, 2018 Report Posted May 12, 2018 Hi Pete, thanks for this, I'll have a closer look asap.
NonMember Posted May 12, 2018 Report Posted May 12, 2018 Or post a photo, because sometimes the appearance is a give-away. But the number is better if it's available.
Pete Lewis Posted May 12, 2018 Report Posted May 12, 2018 +Especially a pic of the gear change remote Pete
Chris59 Posted May 15, 2018 Report Posted May 15, 2018 No gear change remote on this 'box unfortunatly Pete : the stamped number is "G", followed by a number, please see the pictures.
NonMember Posted May 15, 2018 Report Posted May 15, 2018 Gearbox number with just a G prefix would be a 948 Herald, apparently. The photo looks about the right shape for a small car (Standard 8/10, Herald, etc.) box but appears to be an integral bell housing. That fits the earlier description by Colin, which Richard said was Standard 8 / 10 / Atlas.
Pete Lewis Posted May 16, 2018 Report Posted May 16, 2018 Agree G =948 pretty standard early 3 rail 3 sync The top cover takes the normal remote for the small chassis cars Think Standard 8 didnt have a remote, just a direct long gear stick The hole by the slave , wasnt that for a return sprung pushrod with external spring and a setting for throw out free play Also a tie rod to hold unit from shifting forward on the mounts
