Buying a Car

Hi. I’m new here. Looking at buying a Spit maybe tomorrow - but;

1 - it’s MOT’d (passed yesterday). MOT info has colour down correct (red) but tax info has colour down as brown. Assume tax info is right and the seller hasn’t told me of the colour change?

2 - Tax status seems to be ‘SORN’ yet he’s driven it to the MOT station and round his village last week. If I buy the car can I drive it home (obviously with insurance)?

thanks in advance.

Cheers Pete. I think it’s not exempt until next year (1979) so will need to tax it. Can do it online I understand.

What are the views on colour changed cars? Ok if done well? Seems the DVLA don’t know otherwise wouldn’t come up as the ‘old’ colour when checking the tax info (guess MOT has it recorded as the ‘new’ colour as they physically see it?

cheers.

If youre happy with the car get the colour corrected on the new v5c.

Many cars have colour changes in previous ownerships, its a down to preference , if originality doesnt matter its fine

Have look in hidden areas see if the orig still shows to back up the idea its been changed

I guess red it better then Brown ,  yes change the V5 easy  if the Mot is wrong thats more ofna hassle amd less easy

They had my Vit6 MOT wrong colour and even a wrong reg, took a lot of correspondence to get it corrected as the computor recorded are

Not easy to get corrected ....like its my fault the car   doesnt match the duff  data they input

Cheers. I’ll do that. Having to drive quite some distance to see/buy this and going without my mechanic (due to the distance really). I’m assured there is zero rust and dents and there is a list (with receipts) of engine work that’s been completed. It went through an MOT on Thursday with two advisory’s (scored rim and missing battery clamp) so I think it’s a sound car but will try my best to inspect it. Any specific pointers? I suspect that is been stored for a short while as it’s currently SORN which is slightly off putting along with this colour business. Only other points to note (so far) is a possible diff issue when you come off the gas (but fine when back on) and the choke won’t stay out (read about some specialist fixes on here - using a clothes peg!).

Cheers. For some reason the colour change un nerves me!

It all depends on how - and why - it's been done. Peel back door rubbers, or look behind trims, or under the carpet. If it's been simply a blow-over respray on the cheap, was it to hide defects? I can understand owners wanting a shiny red car instead of a more unusual brown colour but it needs to have been done properly and for the right reasons, or problems will soon work their way through it.

An MOT only tells you it's roadworthy, not that it's worth anything and certainly not that it's been maintained correctly.

You'll only know when you see it. The phrase 'in good condition for age' covers a lot of sins... back in 2015 I went to look at a car that the seller's description claimed: no scratches or dents anywhere on the car. It was a mass of marks, dents and scuffs and the power steering failed on the test drive. The seller first tried to tell me the marks would polish out, and then admitted if he'd listed them in the ad, no-one would have come near it... plus: it had just passed MOT two weeks before.

It may turn out to be a good car, but keep your eyes open.

Hi well a drop off in power is certainly nothing to do with the diff

a flat spot in carb or timing will give a unprogressive response  on opening throttles after  over run and can be anything

from   no oil in the dashpots to  ........wrecked

Pete

To be honest I didn’t quite catch what he said/understood. Choke seemed manageable. I’ll give it a good test drive and check it out. Mechanic on standby for a call should I need him.
