LUCAS L677 FRONT SIDE AND INDICATOR LAMP ASSEMBLY

Hi,

 I have a couple of the complete subject items and I am going to fit to new quarter panels.

The chrome bevels, when tightened to the lens, is proud of the housing.

Is there a special way they should/can be fitted?

Lucas fitted M6 threaded mounting hardware? 

I guess pictures will help?

Hi,

 when tightened up with inner gasket in place; The bezel lets proud of the main body.

I want the body sitting on my paint & not the knife edge.

Am I missing something?

There's a big rubber seal goes right round the outer edge. Part number 122229. It fits inside the rear of the body so that the ring of the chrome outer rests on it, and not on the paint.

 I am on my fifth or sixth pair of quarter panels and I have no recollection of this part. My memory?

Looks like I will be ordering a pair.

I wonder why I cannot locate this part for a 1500 spitfire? 154049 is the only part I can find. I have these cheap parts.

part list for a 1500 shows you need two 154049  both being the foam type gasket one for lense one for body sealing

seems the rubber gasket was not used on 1500 side lamps

Pete's right in that it was not fitted to the later Spitfires, but Heralds use more or less the same light unit and the rubber seal protects the bodywork. It's more visible here on the Herald, as opposed to the under-bumper Spitfire lights, but you see very little of it once it's fitted; it's all in behind the light unit with only the black rim showing. You could get away with them on the Spitfire if you wanted to fit them as they'd not be as obvious.

The part you really need for a MKIV/1500 Spit and a GT6MK3 is a 518920, which is another bit of unobtanium.

The cheap 154049 gaskets would need stacking at least five deep to prevent contact of the bezel to paint.

Proper rubber gaskets from the early cars it is.

Hi all,

 The gaskets will not fit the spit1500/GT6 MkIII lamps. Holes in the wrong place & shape wrong. Was worth the try. The rubbers are of good quality and I thought I would have to clean them with a scalpel prior to receiving them. Bought from Rimmers as fed up with fake stuff from everywhere. If anybody wants a pair for a Herald, send me a PM & a SAE. FOC.

I have come to the conclusion the assemble I have purchased is another fake. Metric fittings?? Gaskets that are not fit for purpose. 

I guess I will have to remove metal from the "chrome" bezels?

Firstly: what holes are in the actual quarter valences? If you look at your units above the mounting holes for the backplates are offset but the screws for the lens and chrome bezels line up with the holes in the rubber seals. 

If the holes in the valences permit, just remove the backplate screws and use long screws right through from front to back.

From photos I've just been looking at, most valences seem to allow both fitments - there are two holes on each side. Use the centre ones and ignore the upper / lower ones.

 The valances are hidden behind the sofa at the moment so I cannot check until the other half is out. 

But, the rubbers, even if I added holes are the wrong shape. They are no match, unfortunately. Thanks for trying Colin.

I have some ideas but you would think the original gaskets should work. fail.

I can see a sheet of mdf and the  fret saw at work here   !!  And a gasket cut from an old inner tube  ???

Hi,

 the hidden panels.

I was thinking about a sheet of silicone rubber as it will need to be about 6mm thick?

Or.

Plate the hole up, fill & paint? A new canvas to fit something else?

I don't require sidelight/indicator as these are already incorporated into headlamps.

Colin, they are not for sale but if you or anybody needs them they are yours. They are good looking quality.

I have zero regrets buying them as It was really worth a try.

Hi

Can I re-boot this topic?. I have one sidelight unit L584 which is not recoverable, for the 13/60. However all the othe parts are usable. abeit I do need 2  Rubber seals, which are available from Canley. The chrome scrubs up very well for example. According to what I can find online it`s a case of either you buy a full unit (around £30 each) or hope to pick up a decent S/H one?. Anyone ,know where one might get One?. I note the Units themselves are reversable so LH or RH is not material.

Another little mystery?. looking at the Engine earlier, I note the Filter is a Canister type, Not the earlier paper. BUT screws direct to the block. The Club shop conversion looks as if it is at aright angle?. Picture>

James Paddock has them, £12.50 each - don't let the dark colour out you off, it's just the way they're photographed and they're shiny silver. 

The filter does tilt upwards, they're all screw-on for the later Heralds (6-pots had paper but Heralds were always metal) and where the early filter had the screw attached, later versions have a removable screw fitment in the block so that any suitable thread of filter will fit. There are a couple of threads on here with lists of suitable modern filters to replace the old GFE 150.

Judging by the photo it's not as bad as the ones I've just replaced on my Vitesse, and I only did that because I'd taken them off to repair the rot around them. As Colin says, the base part is available from all the usual suspects - I got mine from Canleys.

Cheers Coilin. Did you get the paddock seals too?. They don`t quite look as thick/substantial as the Canley offering?

The one in the photo is the good one!. The other one is missing the side light completely (rusted off). Hence the need for a replacement. I see that the Paddock offering is missing the division plate/separator?. What was the Canley one like?.  Currently unavailable on their web site.

They're all the same. Lucas deleted that separator plate some time in the early 1970s (or possibly even earlier). It's possible to replace it with a bit of polished biscuit tin - I think Colin described the process in one of his threads - if you want to, but since the ones I was replacing were not the original 1967 vintage ones, my Vitesse already didn't have the plates.
