Another little project ..

My rear chrome fog light has seen better days, mostly on the inside 😅20221129_204041.thumb.jpg.ed0cf4c7cd1819586e10fee344c6c6d8.jpg

Rusty .. but still works 😅

So bought 2 Hella ones, just need to make a bracket to fit them.

Thinking of fitting one on each side for the 'look'.20221208_200919.thumb.jpg.3409edde5f8c51ff13124781e62b3efb.jpg

Will see when I do it.

I still have my DIY rear fog light set up on my Vitesse even tho its been resident here in Aus nearly 50 years.

We lived in Stokesley Nth Yorks and travelled the A19 from Teesside daily in those days late 60's  the big ICI trucks from Wilton used to hammer along even under very foggy pea soup conditions, so I wired the stop lights thro a dash switch with a tell tale dash light to show they were switched on, so effectively I had 2 by 21watt rear tail lights as a warning to the following trucks I was there! The circuit has a one way diode to the dash tell tale light so when the rear fog light is switched off and the brakes applied the amber dash light doesn't light up.

I assume totally illegal, but a DIY need, and saved having to buy and wire front to back extra wiring.

The extra switch's and warning lights fitted over 50+ years, there functions indicated on the white strip at the bottom of the radio, must make that more professional!

The Butler snake arm Map Light & switch is mounted up under the dash so the blue  light just to tell me its been left on?

-5 degrees this morning..

No problem for Fox !

Starting is a bit slow sometimes (need to check sll connections).

But drives very well.

Glad I changed out the 82° thermostat for an 88° one.

Nice warm heater !

Last night tested the fogs again.. nice and bright !

The last week with the freezing cold, Fox did it great.

But...  after a night standing or after work, started up slow.

Sometimes starter even stopped !

Had a look at the engine earth.

No real difference.

Then the day after removed the battery disconnect switch that is on Fox,but really never use it.

Now starts on the button !

Even fully frozen over and -6, no problemo!

Today helped a friend with his TR5 PI.

Play in driveshafts, prop, rusty underneath etc etc.

So going to get everything apart and replace whats bad, de-rust & repaint the underside etc

But again we found more work then we hoped, but it needs to be done 😅

Just the day before (9 sept) the finish of the Club Triumph 10 Countries Run, my gearbox started to fail.

So rushed and fitted my spare box, so could drive for to the finish in the Netherlands to see them all arrive.

Now rebuilded that failed gearbox.

Front bearing fell apart as did the springs etc from the 3/4th syncro hub.

Ironicly a guy I knew had brought over some gearbox bearings for me 😅

Some pics..

Found this in the past week in my garage.. forgot I had a rebuild one (M35J one).

But I had another one, aftermarket M35G.

Already had fitted a new bendix, but nobody had the brushes in stock.

Found them a few weeks ago.

So soldered them in last evening, now to test it 😅

Few days ago noticed some fluid leaking of my pedal 😅

Master was fitted november 2021.

So a year and a month old, good going !

They usually last around a year on Fox.

And im using dot 5 silicone fluid.

Fitted a new Bastuck clutch master and we will see how it goes.

Time to order another spare.

Tested the starter i've rebuild, works very good.

So we got more spare parts.

Even a year is pretty rubbish… I’ve never had to replace a master cylinder on a modern (up to about 15ish year old) car. They must be making the seals out of second hand plasticine or something!

Years ago I went through i think 5 masters in 6 or 7 months.

I had one that failed after 1 week.

Bought county, trw ones and even a willwood one.

And was using dot 4.

Eventually bought county again and dot 5.

Then they lasted about a year.

On my mother her 2005 KA, still original clutch hydraulics.

But one done 60k miles.

Mine has a bit more.. 😅

Sadly it seems I need to bleed some more, the feel is still not good.

A job for tomorrow 😅

Re clutch masters had to replace the daughters Mk2 seals last year after 20 years it was sleeved then with a chromed brass sleeve all my other cars masters are stainless sleeves It uses Dot4, Vitesse Dot5.

In our club here a few members TR’s have successfully used cheap  (PRC $20 delivered) trailer master cylinders and after 10 years still going strong at that price not worth rebuilding/resealing.

Hi do you have more details re "cheap  (PRC $20 delivered) trailer master cylinders" ?

Alan a quick Google search showed these locally here in Aus even Bunnings, but obviously shipment to UK would be too much! You must have a local car trailer parts store supplier. A lot of Aussie households have a trailer or boat trailer so there are a lot of aftermarket trailer suppliers I can think of 3 in our near Industrial Park.

Cheapest I’ve found a County one here recently is £33. Doesn’t quite beat 27ish AUD, but the County clutch master I have on my Herald has outlasted the waste of money Wilwood brake master (both were on about 6 years at this point) so I’d still think it’s a not worth bothering with seal kits etc price. Not that my car gets as much use as Wimpus’!

There are a lot of 3/4" master cylinders out there from Landrover suppliers. But really they are too large a bore for Triumphs. The original size os 5/8" (or 0.625") although some sell tye 3/4 size as an "upgrade", which it isn't.

If you wish to look for them, they are part number STC500100 and range from VERY cheap (£12) up to proper OEM (£120ish)

Rimmers show 3/4in for TR6, & that was what was fitted to my mates when we replaced it, we needed a quick replacement as we were going on a club tour the next day so we used  a like sized trailer master!

Subsequently a few other members have followed suit with no down sides.

Must check to see if the local trailer chappie has 5/8in bore just in case?

I've made the same access hatch as you (after playing far too many times with the clutch slave and striping the interior).  I note you're using the expensive stuff in the clutch hydraulics, brave of you, or deep pockets ;).  Great idea with the elastic cable thing to keep the carpet out of the way, mind if I copy it ?

Im using dot 5 as I have a history of using 5 or 6 clutch master in 6 months...

Since then using dot 5 and now the masters seem to last a year.

But... I dont buy the expensice dot 5 that suppiers sell.
