Thanks folks. I never overpack the fronts with grease, though use the grease gun on the rears every couple of years, though only do about 1500 miles a year. It normally takes a good few pumps before grease (which looks like the older, as I have alternated between the black and brown, not on purpose, just what was there at the time!) comes out of inner side of hub (so guess it must lose some, though no obvious evidence of this, as not sprayed around anywhere visable?). So maybe overdoing it, though no way of knowing, and probably overthinking it (as usual). Thanks
wimpus
Yesterday took the windscreen out. To find more rust then in those 8 years before.. Needed some more welding etc All that was done, this afternoon (when sun shines on the front end of Fox) will put the new screen in.
wimpus
Then... she was ready. Got the seal alround the glass, tyre fitting lube sprayed around the seal and screen surround. Then my helpers arrived First time she popped up when pulling the rope at the side. So a 2nd try and done. 15min from when my helpers arrived until it was fitted, not bad ! Pete Lewis
are you going to pipe some sealer in the glass channel and under the body lip flip just use a cheap gutter sealer pipe till it oozes out a whiz with scraper and wipe with white spirit cheap and works as done by the assy line Pete

My main this is.. screen needs to come out for paint anyway. When that will be... really dont know 🙄😔 But my think is.. is the sealant easy to remove then.. Maybe better put some 'dumdum' around it. Mark B
I used a rubber sealant designed for screen rubbers several years ago when replacing the screen seal on my Gt6 after making significant repairs to the frame. Fitted and forgot for a few months until I notice the edge of the screen rubber lifting slightly in a few places. When peeled back the screen rubber, I was horrified to see red rust and scabbing of the paint on the screen surround. I had to wait for several months before I had the chance to remove the screen. There was severe surface rust and pitting. I had previously used a lk etch, red primer, and a gloss black top coat. I believe the sealant had reacted with the 1k paint. Treated the rust and repainted using the same process, but fitted a new screen seal without any rubber sealant, and has been fine for the last 10 years, with no leaks. Couple of years ago I replaced the front screen seal on the Vitesse, and again didn't use any sealant, and so for so good.
Pete Lewis
the design of the seal has a lot to do with is it dry sealed or needs sealer all down to aperture condition and how if any the sealing flips make body contact same for the glass channel if ribbed it should be ok if smooth it will likely leak
wimpus
Ordered some parts and they arrived today! So another 'project'... yes I got to many. (Thinking of a new dash to the last 2 weeks 😅 ) This will be build up as 'Spare assembly'. Honestly I can say that i'm rebuilding these shafts. I knew a local so called Triumph Specialist that swaped over half shafts (and many other parts) between a Spit he sold and his private car 🙄 . My uncle has been busy the last 3 weeks learning to work with his 2nd hand lathe he bought a year ago. So he made a spacer 😅. Made on a british Myford for a british car 😁
rogerguzzi
Hello You can fit a longer needle roller bearing if you leave the outer spacer out ! From memory it is 2 to 3m longer so runs on that bit at the end where you can see on yours no bearing runs! I have done thousands of miles since doing it and I had to strip the gearbox this year for another problem but the bearing and shaft were fine. Roger Ps I will look up the size and number later You could find a thead on the sideways forum
rogerguzzi
Hello Here you are this is what I diid in photos I will look up the number tomorrow(to cold in the garage now!) Peter Truman
Very informative the pic’s are great and worth a thousand words Thanks I have a 1850 Single Rail J type OD to modify for the Vitesse ( into a 3 rail case!) Will do the mod!
rogerguzzi
Hello All This is the size bearing I used it is 3mm longer than the Triumph one and if you fit the thin spacer at the spline end with the chamfer outwards to go next to the splines it all fits and gives 3mm bearing surface Or about 22% more bearing surface which has got to be better in my book? Needle Roller Cages: Needle Roller Cage Assemblies (simplybearings.co.uk) Its 18mm i/d x 25mm o/d x 17mm Long Roger ps I have covered just under 20,000 miles since this mod and I had to strip the gearbox in between as a bit of NEW circlip was found on the magnetic drain plug on the winter service!!!!! The bearing was still good and the shaft I did replace it as I thought of it as a service item at that price?

wimpus
Windscreen washer motor was getting wet and rusty. So it was leaking, yesterday fitted a new one. Then it was spraying right over Fox right on to the inside of the garagedoor.. great 😆 Adjusted my twin jets from a classic Mini (very hard to set up...) Now sort of work, only need more adjustments or other jets.
