  1. Pett, My comments about the 20W50 oil was concerning the short life of the Comma oil. 2000 miles is not very good. Change one thing at a time methodology I guess. Only heard good things about Castrol GTX 20W50. I only use or recommend thinner oils as everybody knows. Gremlins? Yep. Cheers. Iain.
  2. Hi, Hi, Calibrate your oi pressure gauge first. Explained in a previous post. if your hot oil pressure is 40+ at 2k or maybe 3K hot then OK. No harm in checking PRV. Do not add washers unless the cheap spring is shot. Do not try 20W60 in the engine unless you are selling to a dealer. Dump the crap Comma oil. It will last a couple of K if your lucky. Much better 20W50 oils out there. Oil pump would be next easy thing to check with feeler gauges. If you do have to change bearings & pump; suggest you avoid 20W50 if you do not want a repeat. LOL. Cheers, Iain
  3. Hi, ethyl alcohol, ethanol. Periodically i buy the denatured stuff if i see it cheap enough & add to my fuel tank. Removes any standing water so its "burnt" with the fuel is my understanding. Stops water oxidation to steel fuel tank also. My fuel tank looks like new inside. I cannot see why fuel hoses and diaphragms have not been changed in the time that was available? Not as if this is news. I assume that new Stromberg diaphragms are Ethanol safe. You can make 1000 liters a year for your car without paying tax. You could use the same equipment to make a good drinking spirit. Is everybody here teetotal? Aluminium surfaces do not like vodka strength alcohol so i hear. Fit new hoses & be happy. PS Just drink it! Cheers, Iain.
  4. Use the old fashioned method. Brick it and claim? Just don't post about it? Cheers, Iain. PS. a new screen in your car and you will not know its there, for a while. PPS. Get the Syndim? tinted one.
  5. Hi. I surmise that you only get maximum flow at peak torque RPM. A larger inlet will increase the RPM where this is can be achieved. Cheers, Iain.
  6. Hi, I guess unusual valve timings & lift could mitigate this difference in ratio. I have yet to see an Internal Combustion Engine that did not have larger area inlet to the outlet. Cheers, Iain.
  7. "The main reason for the size difference is to avoid pre-ignition and knocking. The exhaust valve is the hottest part of the engine. We also know that Q=m Cv dT. Hence the heat generated is directly proportional to the mass of the substance. Now if the size of the exhaust valve increases, its mass increases. So the heat of the valve increases. Now after the exhaust stroke, the charge(air and fuel) is sucked in for the next cycle. If the temperature of the exhaust is very high it may cause pre ignition. Also even if the temperature of the valve is not that high, during compression the charge becomes more volatile. The exhaust valve will ignite the charge creating a flame front which progresses in all directions. Also the spark plug creates a flame front. When these two flame fronts meet, knocking takes place. To avoid these difficulties the exhaust valve size is kept smaller than the inlet valve." ............From Quora. It's been +voted 80 times. Bless the internet for information. Now while sipping a pint, with your mates (Gender fluid), you can show your IC engine knowledge by repeating the above verbatim Add your upvote on Quora & change the facts. Or is the joke on me? Cheers, Iain.
  8. Hi, Just fit a 88°C thermostat. It will be toasty in winter & OK in the summer. I do not know why one would fit an 82°C thermostat. Both stats will be fully open at less than 99°C? A 88°C stat is going to warm your car up quicker. Very important for short trips. Cheers, Iain.
  9. Hi, How about a threaded rod or whatever its called, screwed all the way in and then cut with enough showing so that you can add a washer, spring washer & screw on a Chrome Acorn/Nipple/Scania nut? Cheers, Iain.
  10. Hi, Fit a self-adhesive number plate to the front of the bonnet. No shrouding & looks far better. Cheers, Iain.
  11. Hi, remove a shim from the four lower wishbone brackets and steering will be lighter. Cheers, Iain.
  12. Hi, Interesting that the rear brakes effect the handling under braking. My experience is that after heating up drums to the point of ignition, replacing cracked ones, having a crappy handbrake & being an absolute pig to set-up they have no effect on the "pulling". Always thought incorrect front geometry Was set-up a couple of years ago and results were symmetrical. No weight in the car either. Spitfire chassis & brake cables. CV rear shafts. In a garage now getting sorted. I have the 3 different choices of rear cylinder diameter. Looks like I'm fitting 5/8"'s. Cheers, Iain.
  13. Hi Dave, I thought that the LW band was more protected now due to EMC/RFI regulations than it was when a household or automotive switching devices were not required to be suitably suppressed. I have not listened to anything below 100000KHz for a very long time and LW/MW for much longer. Shame if the bands are polluted. I wonder if the pollution affects the RF clocks. Cheers, Iain.
  14. Hi, The radio scale is x 100KHz. Bung a long (>5Meters) wire up the antenna socket of the radio. If you cannot hear a station on LW or MW; Front end duff. Cheers, Iain. There is a 4-watt transmitter on 198KHz or 1.9 2.0 on your LW scale at the Dartford tunnel according to the internet. If you cannot hear Radio 4 on this frequency at this location; your antenna or front end is kaput.
  15. Hi, any difference between engine running and not? If it's noisy without the engine/loads running you need to look at increasing signal strength first. Cheers, Iain.
  16. I thought I was old. Only remember the Neil/young ones one.
  17. Hi, If I was fusing headlamps. I would start with two rather large fuses and then smaller ones for each side. Would like a low resistance short to kill only one side of the car's headlamps, not both. Cheers, Iain.
  18. Hi, Hope this answers the question? The flash is fired by the purple wire (Battery), so it works with the lights off. Cheers, Iain
  19. Electronics; You just use the wire that fits or is calculated to the mm length & diameter? I bought my RF/AF coils pre-wound. Never used the diameter for measurement. Rewinders use diameter. Motor rewinders in the UK make a fortune!
  20. Hi, In my lifetime I have never met anyone (the electrician excluded) that talked about the diameter of a wire. Maybe why my mates tease me by calling me an electrician? Cheers, Iain. PS. The only time my brain goes to AWG or SWG is if I'm buying solder, reading some old or American documents. Data cables?
  21. I once met an electrician that thought 120mm² was 35mm². Never heard of that before.
  22. Hi, Sorry I could not find the ² symbol so I typed Cross-Sectional Area. Iain.
  23. Hi, the more turns the better. There will be space to do this with 2mm CSA. Cheers, Iain.
  24. Radial with a few more MCB's. ELCB's are a better choice though. Ring-mains are a British and colonies thing. Served its purpose after WW2. Radial mains are allowed & better IMHO. Cheers, Iain.
