  1. Hi Nick, I removed the extension and fitted the brass carrier i had when it was first fitted,i think the issue is the angle of the operating arm is past vertical towards the bell housing when clutch not depressed and almost touching the bell housing when fully depressed,i think this means the carrier is too short because of the difference in the Vitesse and saloon flywheels. Steve
  2. Got the clutch out today, only about 2mm of friction material each side of the plate, cover is ok.Plate is an 8.5 inch 10 spline. Need to get the geometry of the operation right before i put it back together. Any advice appreciated,e mailing Mike Papworth now. Steve
  3. Thread update.. Finally wrestled the box out today, nothing wrong with the taper pin or cross shaft which is a bit disappointing, the bearing is definitely noisy and knackered, can`t get the clutch off as it`s got imperial hex head bolts and i can`t find one to fit it.Hopefully it`s just worn out but i thought it would do more than the 12k its done. I have a bearing carrier extender which i will try and post a picture of to see what people more knowledgeable than me think on the travel issue. Steve
  4. On my old TriumphTune wheelbarrow on the Vitesse it had cotton reel rubber mounts bolted through the boot floor,i think it definitely needs a flexible mount to cope with the movement. I removed mine due to low ground clearance and had a custom single box system made. Steve
  5. I`m missing driving my Herald and Vitesse at the moment, clutch trouble with the Vitesse, because it`s a 2.5 with Saloon box it`s a pita to get out. Herald is waiting for me to have a day where nobody is telling me what we are doing today,so i can actually get the new engine in. The last 3 months must be the longest i have gone without a working Triumph for probably 10 years. Usually go to the Brooklands New Years Day meeting, normally packed out. Steve
  6. I`m sure there were some special shafts available for a MK 1 setup,(Sommers Bros.?) Chris (Sherrington)? had some on his Spit T6. If i remember rightly they were about £800 a set and that was a few years ago. Steve
  7. 3:27 were originally GT6,can`t remember whether o/d or non o/d.Someone will know, Speak to Mike Papworth,he has stock of most stuff and is good bloke to deal with. Steve
  8. I did the very same thing to my MK 1 Vitesse 2.5 after snapping a driveshaft on the 2012 Round Britain Run. I sourced the parts over time before fitting,i was lucky at the time that Nick was still doing his excellent conversion with MGF bearings,i went for the full setup built up by him as i trust him more than myself. You need the wishbones, tie bars, uprights, and the wishbone bracket to weld to the chassis,.these are available from Canleys(still available i think). And obviously your choice of CV shafts. I also went for a new 3.27 diff with a modified carrier. Also a Saloon gearbox with J type overdrive. It has produced a quick car but also one that will cruise at 80 no problem(on private roads. Also make sure the brakes are in good order,i found the standard setup with a set of Mintex 1144 pads work great. I am doing the same thing to my Herald 1500 at the moment.Using the Rimmer/Jigsaw CV shaft.Got a decent price on one of their many sales. Steve
  9. Ive also got a spare dizzy somewhere removed from my Spit engined Herald, now changed to a 1500 with a 123 dizzy. If your stuck i can have a look for it. Its a Delco with the curly wire clamps. Steve
  10. Canleys do the brackets if that`s what you need. https://www.canleyclassics.com/suspension-steering-and-brakes/rear-wishbone-mounting-bracket Steve
  11. I fitted a catch tank with a filter to my 1500 Herald,seems fine now. https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/0-3L-Oil-Catch-Breather-Can-Universal-Baffled-Aluminum-Reservoir-Tank-Black/192635177615?hash=item2cd9f38a8f:g:A8UAAOSwQmhbfl6p:rk:13:pf:0 Steve
  12. They aren`t Stanpart, just NOS pattern skins,i think the seller has worded it to say the original Stanpart part no. I bought something very similar back in the day for my Vitesse, fitted ok aside from a little fettling of the curve in front of the quaterlight. Still on the car and rust free to this day,due to copious amounts of Waxoyl in the doors. Steve
  13. I thought it was cheap, but bought one for my new engine Herald project, looks fine but not fitted yet. Cost...i`m guessing Chinese bulk buy. Happening in lots of areas of supply including CCTV which is what i do. Steve
  14. Welcome,nice colour!. Steve
  15. Maybe not with a cast iron exhaust,my 4-1 mild steel one on my Herald makes the carbs roasting hot. Steve
  16. Moulded every time, the best you can afford, stitched look like someone stood back and threw them at the car.I changed mine last year and the moulded are a vast improvement. Steve
  17. Spoke to Mike Papworth,he reckons it`s taper pin.. Steve
  18. Hello Clive,i have a specially made extension for the carrier which increases it by about an inch,i think because i have a Vitesse flywheel which is shallower anyway. The extension was originally fitted,i cant for the life of me remember why i changed it,i remember the original carrier was steel and i fitted a brass one and all was ok until now. Going to start taking it out at the weekend. Steve
  19. Got the pipe fitting changed by my local old school garage.Fitted the 1600 slave and...no difference, can`t get the bloody thing in gear and the arm seems to be so close to the bell housing when clutch is pressed there must be something going on with the carrier. I suppose it will have to come out, which is a right royal pita. Must change my signature to 0 triumphs working. Steve
  20. More advice needed.. tried to fit a 1600 slave today, shortened the rod by about an inch as the slave sits further forward, problem is the pipe fitting is smaller on the 1600 slave. Looked at various suppliers and all list one pipe for sixes and one for four cylinder units,no idea whether to get a new pipe or just a fitting and a flaring tool,if so what size?. Cheers Steve
  21. FH is just larger bearings on the crank, supposedly less tuneable if you want to rev the nuts of it,small bearing crank required for that. You wouldn`t notice the difference in a standard car,i ran it with a 3.63 diff and overdrive gearbox and it would sit happily at 70+ on a run. Steve
  22. XTW is Roy Laceys 2.5 GT6. Done 2 RBRR`s,one in my Vitesse and one in my Herald, not for the faint hearted, especially in a 2 man crew.Worth doing but i`ve done it now and stick to more relaxed tours. Steve
  23. If you want it back on the road quickly i have just removed a 1300 from my Herald in order to fit a 1500,its unknown mileage and spec, as it came as a spare with the car i rescued after being off the road for 30 years,it`s an FH engine so large bearing. I took the head off before fitting it and saw it has +20 pistons,so must have been rebuilt in the 70`s.I ran it in my Herald for 5 years including completing the CT Round Britain run in it in 2014. If it was me i would get the car on the road and then fix the original engine over time. Steve
  24. My daughters both had modern Mini Coopers,i used to own a 1968 Cooper, great car.Failed to persuade them on the merit of old ones. One of the moderns was a nightmare and the other was fine, early ones(pre 2006) had Chrysler engines which had a tendency to over heat. After 2006 they were Peugeot which liked to throw the cam chains.Don`t know about newish ones but best get the fault codes read and get it dealt with before major failure. Just remembered the early ones were known for the power steering pumps failing suddenly which was interesting for the largely female ownership suddenly being unable to turn the wheel.
  25. Not a fan of laying our cars up but its your choice.I use my Herald and Vitesse (Vitesse owned since 1985) all year in any weather, went to Goodwood from Surrey a couple of years ago in November with the roof off at -2 degrees, lovely. I think these cars need to be used, less use = more issues imho. Now off to get the clutch working... Steve
