  1. This thread is getting very philosophical?. I`m hoping to "do more" with Plum come the new year, but at present the tank is out, the rear valence needs some tlc and the overiders still have to go back on now they have both bolts functioning and are bright again. And I just might put the Tow bar on, which means I have an excuse to use it for the odd trip to the recyling, using the long route through the back roads past a favourite Pub.👍 Pete
  2. REf; The foam seal, I was cogitating on wether a slice of 1" "kingspan" might not be an improvement?. It`s lack of much compressability may be an issue?. It does however not absorb moisture as readily?. There was no plate By the way?. The hole in the Tub is way bigger than the drain. I note that the latest tank offerings don`t have the drain, which would make fitting theoretically somewhat easier. Pete
  3. To which I might add, Age and limiting physical capacity?. In 2015 I took on a 13/60. And in the first year/18months brought it from pure basket case to rolling shell. Circumstances changed during and after lockdown, and to be fair the project stalled completely, yes I did some work getting the gaps looking less like the canyons of the moon, but the amount of time became seriously restricted by other factors, when I went into a virtual full time carer role. Hence last year I took on another 13/60, Plum, from Jeff, and finally enjoyed some driving time. The orginal car is now stored, and will likely be on offer in the new year, when I can get around to finding all the bits collating and then advertising. It`s a project whichever way you look at it and will need a fair amount of further work, which to be honest I can no longer complete. Overall, I suspect that "our" cars appeal less to the younger element who`s eye is more to the Golf GTi, Escort Mk3 generation of cars?, Some of which early one`s are already aproaching 40yr Old. Pete
  4. Yes!!!. I took the tank out of Plum, a week or two back to get at the overider bolts, also destroyed the neck filler seal in the process. (was well "past it`s sell by date"). Plenty of wriggling involved, the foam seal round the drain was a right PITA. Pete
  5. When it come to spanners, I have an extremely "eclectic" collection, ranging BA, Whit, AF,Metric. O/E and Ring, straight and offset, and several "modified" spanners for special purposes, which fit no known standardisation, add to that several large(ish) "flogging" spanners. Somewhere I believe, I still have a genuine Rail Fish Plate spanner. Offset O.E with a 4ft spiked handle, the spike is to align the plates. Sockets come in Long, short, 1/2- 3/8 and 1/4" drive and even 1/2 Hexagon drive. size ranged from 0BA and right up to 1" drive X 2-3/4" AF. Over the years, my two sons have raided the more popular ones, and "lost" them, on many occasions. Now I live too far away, so don`t lose as many!😁 Up my neck of the woods we had Manchester Screwdrivers, but that is probably a hangover from the war of the roses?. They come in 2oz, 1/2Lb 1Lb 2Lb, "Lump" and 7LB (short shaft) 14Lb full. The 28Lb sledge, didn`t make it during a House move. The "go to" emergency fixits include superglue and gaffer tape. Self Amalgamatiing Tape can be an electrical lifesaver too. My family keep telling me they are dreading clearing the workshop garage, when I fall off my twig. Even MY grandads Shipwrighting tools are still there. Might be worth a bob or two now? Oh! and the 1945 Drummond Lathe, forerunner of Myford, still working but now rather tired. Pete
  6. If you can devise some method of cover which does not actually rest on the car and allows ventilation you should reduce any risk to a minimum. Perhaps draped over a couple of battens suspended from the beams?. Pete
  7. Hmmm?. Have you checked out the Golden Rivet?. I do know a few "Shanties" that would NEVER get an airing in to-days, P-C/Snowflake climate. Back in the 50`s, on the BBC schools programme. A song, a shantie, called "Johnie come down to hilo" was broadcast to 13 to 15 years olds, the words to which include several stanzas that by todays "standards" would be classed as Racist. Pete
  8. If I recall correctly, at one time you could buy bleed valves with a non return valve incorprated?. Pete
  9. Could be Sealy, But the garage is dark and too ******* cold to go looking. But it work`s OK?. And with no access to "Assistants" now I have to become a proper "one man band". Time was I could press gang/bribe a grandchild. But now the nearest is 200+miles away. The oldest is in Australia!. Pete
  10. There is currently "talk" of a similar scheme being rolled out in HULL. The illegal use is already a safety hazard to both pedestians and the the users from vehicles who don`t expect them. And are surprised when one suddenly cuts across to to make a right turn with no warning. So now they "propose" legalising their use by persons who probably have even less knowledge of the "rules of the road" via the Hire of these Death Traps. Mind as an American Friend of mine is wont to say, "every dumbass death, only helps clean the gene pool". Pete
  11. It's legal to use an e-scooter on private land with the permission of the land owner. Where a trial rental scheme is running, it's legal to use a rental e-scooter on a public road or cycle lane, provided you have the correct licence and follow road traffic regulations. (The Met; Police). And:- Technically, an electric scooter is a motorised two-wheel vehicle or Personal Light Electric Vehicle (PLEV). They differ from electric bikes not just because they don't have pedals but because they are classed as motor vehicles under the road traffic laws. If you were caught on a public highway, you'd technically be driving a motor vehicle with no insurance - you could be liable for a fixed penalty of £300 and six points on your driving licence. If the case went to court, you could get an unlimited fine and be disqualified from driving. Your scooter could also be impounded by the police. Even if you did have a model that followed the rules, you'd also need to obey other law to use it - tax, insurance, MOT, driving licence and helmet. Non of which the "scooterist" in the dash cam clip appears to have?. Pete
  12. I blame DVD3500. BTW if you want to see them Google Hessle Morris. and look for the "Raving Maes". I`ve seen them live at my Local Pub (Beer Festival) and its "interesting" viewing.😁 Pete
  13. There is a local all Female Morris group who dance the morris in tight Bask black stockings, mini skirts and doc martins Absolutely cracking group of women and brilliant with kids. Pete
  14. PeteH

    Compression test

Repeat the test, with a "spoonful" of oil in each cylinder, it also gives a (better) indication of ring condition. Or so the pundits used to say? Pete
  15. 😂😂, Wagger. Recalls a tale my Wife tells, as a child (1940/50`s) she spent most Summers on an Uncle`s Farm. The "highlight" was being woken in the night by Uncle letting off his shotgun from his bedroom window, haveing been woken by his dogs barking (usually) as a warning that a Fox was skulking around the chickens. When they cleared the rickyard they brought in ferrets and the terriers, the vermin count could be in very high numbers. The farm workers would tie the bottoms of their trousers as a precaution☹️. Most of your modern vermin "poisons" are based on chemicals similar to "warfarin", which cause gross internal bleed and eventual death. When taken back to the nest the other vermin are similarly affected. I am on alert at the present as the Infestation season is already started, I note that the bait is being taken again. Useless info: Aparently, the Rev; Jack Russell, bred the dogs that bear his name originally as "ratters"?. Back "on Topic". I had an issue with the alarm in my R-V. Which was eventually traced to a wire that had been subject to attack by mice. That was when I started to take a better "interest" in the subject of vermin control. Pete
  16. Strange as it may seem, But when I worked for a short period in the Hawker Factory at Brough, Yorks. We had a "MIlk Float" type vehicle whose main tasking was carrying aircraft parts between the various parts of the factory. It had a deformed Chassis, the result allegedly, of someone thinking it could take the weight of a Bristol Centaurus Engine out of a Beverley Freighter!!. When it had problems, "who do you call"? Maintenance, ie; US. The battery relays gave us endless "joy". Well the site "lecky`s" actually, but we did get involved and ocasionally "borowed" it to carry tools and Machine Parts. I think the Herald I took my test in was white?, curtesy of BSM. Wet, greasy/Icy/sleeting February, elderly cyclist fell off in front of me, the "impromptu" Emergency Stop, near had the examiner through the windshield, despite which I passed!. Pete
  17. Talking Milk Floats, which we were`nt. I saw a Tesla parked yesterday. The screen on the dash, looked larger than that my Laptop, which I use as my Main computer these days!. Just how much "information" do Milk FLoat Drivers need. And more to the point IMV, it takes concentration away from the job of actually driving in a safe manner. Pete
  18. Not really related to any specific failure, but it is worth considering, with any fastener, "has it been over tightend in it`s past", and by definition taken beyond its elastic limit? that and "notches" produced by poor machining practices, have been the source/start point of many a failure. Peter
  19. Looks Smart, you`ve done well by the look of it?. Wellcome to madhouse!😁 Solihull, rings a bell, but for what reason I cannot recall?. Is there a large retail park close by?. Pete
  20. I unfortunately, have to bait for Vermin quite regularly at home, as my next door neighbour has horses in livery close by, and keeps their feed in her garage which is unfortunately attached to mine. I get it from a supplier on the internet, the local merchants won`t supply anymore as I now need to be licenced to use it!. I`ve been using this stuff since "god was a lad", but the "elfs" have bu**ered that, and decent weed killer as well!!. I have "industrial" bait stations which prevent birds and other small animals accessing it + Dog`s Cat`s etc;. So far it has kept any infestation to a minimum. Usually I find the odd corpse within a week or so, by which time they are deyhdrated normally, if you get the breeding female it stops for quite some time. We recently had a Black European Mink show up too, caught that on cctv, they allegedly live by the old canal and predate on the ducks and other wildfowl, so it`s quite unusual to see. We got used to Rats, it was a regular and continuous battle at sea especially on the older Grain carrying ships. Had odd nights in hotels ashore from time to time while a ship was being fumigated, they used Cyanide based gases, back then!!. Pete
  21. We had reason to store a 32ft Winnebago for several months in the USA between Excursions. What I found was 1) the "sticky" traps to be quite effective, I foumd 3 or 4 deduns each time in the lockers, and 2)Tumble dryer sheets, deter them?. Aparently something in the sheet formulation is not to their likeing. That was a tip from an Amercan woman who travelled the `states on her own. Scary Bird, but wife and her got on like big buddies, Both being "crafty". Pete
  22. You obviously got the one that had`nt had the "humour bypass". The first time I went out to Houston, when My Son and his family settled there after Brasil. He warned me NOT to try my "humour" out on the immigration! or I might just be going home in an Orange Suit!. Sadly, we are unlikely to get out again any time soon, the cost of Medical Insurance is frightening, Last/best quote for `er indoors, was £2,230 for a month, that from the only one of 2 that would even quote!.
  23. See my Previous post. I`ve been making serious attempts to reduce my potential liability. For about 20 years, I think I`m succeeding?.😉 Often Refered to a "SKI"ing. 😁 Pete
  24. Now that`s what I call serious Lateral Thinking. My poor effort relates to using an old Bread Crate Trolley to make the engine able to be moved about. Well Done that man!. Pete
  25. One "benefit" of little 3 cyl engines, (Peugeot 107), VED is only 20 quid a year. And CAZ exempt. Only down side current is I have to keep cancelling the Engine "fault" light, `cos it needs a new O2 sensor☹️. (Hopefully not a Cat!), but it`s a crawl underneath job, and Plum, 13/60, is taking the space in the garage. Still got a Pair of Stromberg`s for a Mk 1, 2 Litre Vitesse somewhere?. In need of refurb though. Pete
