  1. Just looked in my Haynes manual, date in front cover 1973 price £2.50, page 116. Perhaps we should start a class action to get our money back. Regards Paul
  2. My book lists GT6 123 - OD 3.89 GT6 123 Std. 3.27 I can not imagine why you would fit overdrive to a car and then give it a diff. which would give even lower rpm. Regards Paul
  3. Have bits from this box will have to see if they are compatible or usable, first problem will be finding them. Regards Paul
  4. Have fitted the gearbox with J type overdrive from my long term project, not as quiet and the overdrive is not as smooth when selected engages with more of a thump. Been having a look at the faulty gearbox. Two teeth missing from the third gear on the countershaft, would I need to change the mainshaft third gear as well?. Would the overdrive, J type, need stripping for cleaning?. Regards Paul
  5. As Colins post. When I had my 12/50 Herald many years ago it had a starting handle kit from Triumph, you had to make a bracket to weld to the front cross tube but was supplied with an alloy removable plate, with Triumph Logo, to cover the hole in the front valence. Had to remember to keep your fingers and thumb on the correct side of the handle as a kick back could do some damage. Regards Paul
  6. Overdrive and gearbox use the same oil, plug on the side of the gearbox about half way up, this also sets the level for gearbox and overdrive. Regards Paul
  7. Thanks for the offer. Will remove and dismantle and see where I go from there. Regards Paul
  8. Driving round the north orbital on the way home, Dorchester to Norwich, a nock started but only in third on arriving home drained the gearbox oil and found bits stuck to the magnetic drain plug. Annoying thing is this is or rather was a quiet gearbox with good syncro so will have to remove it to delve deeper. Keeps me busy in retirement. Regards Paul
  9. Have you tried the Triumph Dolomite Club forum?. Regards Paul
  10. Sounds elecrical if the light does not come on when overdrive selected, where could depend on how the light was wired in. As Pete said check the adjustment on the inhibiter switches, they can also stick. Never bypass them as selecting and driving in reverse while in overdrive will cause damage. Regards Paul
  11. Checked various uj cups, including GKN with large rollers, with a micrometer all the same size. This was in a reply to a post last December when I was rebuilding a drive shaft for a Mk1 Vitesse 2L. Regards Paul
  12. Several sorts Vitesse/GT6 Herald/Spitfire disc Herald drum etc. Regards Paul
  13. Interested in the comments about green stuff pads as fitted some over the last winter, I bought them from the club shop several years ago. My Vitesse 2L MK1 has a servo fitted which you can do without drilling any extra holes in body or manifold, pictures in my gallery. Mot due in a couple of weeks so will try and remember to ask the examiner his opinion of the brakes, assuming it passes. My impression with the green pads is that the car brakes well but it is more difficult to lock the front wheels. Regards Paul
  14. Thank you for your replies but I was asking if there is a reason you should not use new technology batteries in classic cars i.e. incompatibility with older charging systems. Regards Paul
  15. Been looking for a new battery for my Vitesse three year warrantee ones lead acid technology four year ones calcium, is there any reason the newer type of battery should not be fitted?, I have an alternator fitted. Currently using a 038 although I know others have fitted a 063. Regards Paul
  16. A quick look on the net turned this up http://forum.roversclub.org/forum/showthread.php?881-Repair-of-mechanical-temp-gauges Found another one using what I think is the equivalent of quick start. Never tried either and probably never will. Regards Paul
  17. Have a couple of new old stock wiper boxes bearing the number 72851A, 22 teeth on the gear wheel, are these for a Vitesse with both wipers inboard of the washer jets?. Searches on the net suggest mini. Many thanks Paul
  18. There was a diagram, published in the courier l think, that used two relays so that if you changed down to first or second with overdrive selected on changing back up to third or forth overdrive was not selected until the switch was set to off then on. Regards Paul
  19. Local one man band engineering firm made one for me many years ago from a piece of heavy duty pipe with a flange on the end, looks very similar to Colin's. Originally had it to remove the drive shafts from the font hub on a 1500FWD, long since gone, but I still have odd bits never can seem to through them out. Leave the nut on the end of the shaft as the hub can came flying of if the nut is not there to stop it. Regards Paul
  20. Think the engines in the 2000 are fitted on the slant which then puts the carbs at an angle if the manifold is used in a Vitesse. Regards Paul
  21. Anyone know the thread type and size. Many thanks Paul
  22. Are you saying it will not hook onto side valence. Regards Another Paul
  23. On my MK1 Vitesse used part of a bicycle wheel spoke, it hooks into a hole in the top of the side valence. Regards Paul
  24. Any guarantee is in addition to your statutory rights and can extend to six years. If you need to return an item under warranty always ask for your money back and buy the same item again, this way warranty starts from the date of the new purchase not the original purchase date. Regards Paul
