  1. Pete Triumph didn't balance the crankshafts, they just relied on them being about right when cast. They were not designed to be pushed to the limits, which is why they benefit so much from being dynamically balanced. what has been ground Off your crank may be what is required to balance it.
  2. POR15 only works on rusty metal, properly rusty metal, thus the name "paint over rust number 15" it just falls off shiney metal, this I know as the previous owner used it on the new sills of my 2000 it it just falls off again.
  3. Not that bad from the back save a shaft after cutting forks, done it twice recently. unlike Pete I have not seen any predrilled with a hole, had over a dozen boxes through my hands.
  4. I wonder if that Is some sort of leak sealant that has been added to reduce any issues following the rebuild. Not necessary on a decent rebuild perhaps.
  5. It needs to Be etch primed i would then put it somewhere dry until the car is resprayed
  6. The best you can hope for is persistant wiggling and tapping and the stub drops out. I usually give up after an hour or so. Assess whether the shaft or fork is the more worn and cut the worst one with a grinder. if you cut the shaft you can the drill the hole in back of fork and punch stub out. If you cut fork then you can rotatbshaft 180 degrees and drill hole in situ and save shaft. fit new cross shaft bushes whilst you are in there.
  7. Cheap fuel, not for long, pound crashed against the dollar yesterday. 😞
  8. You need to get about 2ft clearance underneath to get the gearbox out, usually too high for a jack. get an assistant and the gearbox comes out fairly easily between the 2 of you. Alternatively put it onto your stomach if you are on your own.
  9. As lng as it was across axles and not sides or diagnonally
  10. Screen frame easily removable. Well it should be.
  11. will have to have a closer look at bearing surface. having seen price of a new cluster it may make that box unviable.
  12. Mmmm, better go measure length of input shaft just in case it is not a 1850 one.
  13. It Is a 1959 Daimler and it is supposed to be green!
  14. I picked up a recon 1850 Single rail box still wrapped up from being reconditioned many years ago I think. Gearbox number is stamped DR 4825 (not sure that fits any model) Also stamped M86 MTM 14 498 Any ideas of who did the rebuild? Cheers Colin
  15. Pulled my spare 3-rail box apart to see if the loss of the reverse selector arm had done much other damage. Reverse idler was quite chewed up (I suspect less caring owners in the distant past, I have had it 30 years so it only saw a max 17 years use) and I had a very good spare on in a box of bits. But there is a bit of chewing on the layshaft cluster reverse gear, though all other gears seem fine. It is actually a Dolomite 1850 box with a J-Type on the back so the laygear is different to other boxes. What is the consensus? Reusable? Just be careful going into reverse?
  16. On one of the classic car restoration programs they sprayed some Volvo bits chromed silver as the Mazak was too poor to rechrome, Might have been Drew thingys one . looked half decent.
  17. You did get the "bossless" Mk1 blocks in very early 2000 saloons. I lost a sale at the last moment when the buyer realised it would not fit in his Vitesse.
  18. I too have bits of 50+ year old hose on some of my cars and no issues at all with it. have had trouble with the 20 and 10 year old bits fitted to replace the "old" hoses. those bits have now been replaced with new Ethanol proof stuff. Not that the previous stuff wasn't supposed to be safe
  19. Going off on a related tangent.... I have a single rail Dolly 1850 box (well actually a gearbox with teeth missing off the layshaft and a new gear set) how easy is it to fit all the innards to a 3 rail box so I can fit it to the back of my Vitesse engine. I can find selectors etc to fit and I have some 3 rail casings
  20. And fitting a brand new chassis is fine, as it classes as a replaceable part. But only if brand new, so make sure you get a receipt. 🙂
  21. Well it shows as having a 14 day money back return period so perhaps the buyer should have taken that option. listing was lacking a few decent pictures, just lots of close ups
  22. 2 people can move a Bare Spitfire shell about fairly easily. 4 people should be a breeze even with doors on.
  23. Dizzy implies Mk3 or Mk4 Spitfire. breather pipe on rockers says Mk4. So engine number should be FH
  24. Any sign of them turning on Flammanville yet? The UK has a lot riding on that a time Hinckley Point and Sizewell. I have my money on the Chinese to win the race at one of the other sites.
  25. Paul can't fail to notice the wind farms in our area, Scrobie Sands off Gt Yarmouth, Gunfleet Sands off Clacton, Galloper off Felixstowe that is the start of the East Anglia ONE which will see £70bn invested in turbines. East Anglia ONE is set to be the largest wind farm in the world! Nor can you miss the enormous cable trench that has been dug right round the north of Ipswich to connect the landing point of the cables north of Felixstowe to the National Grid feed from Sizewell at Bramford.
