UK badge / sticker

I've had an alloy GB badge mounted under the bumper on my spitfire 1500 for years.

Looking into getting a new UK one and realised my old one is technically illegal as its too small.

180x133 is legal size  .

Where have you mounted your GB/UK badge on a spitfire.  And if it's a stick on one will it come off or damage the paint.

Thanks

  • p7rider changed the title to UK badge / sticker

GB, UK? I don't think the Gendarmes here will bother about the technicality, they probably aren't aware of the change anyway.

What they will be interested in is your speed. Article yesterday, Brit in a Ferrari clockes at 160kph on a road with a limit of 90kph. His licence taken away on the spot and car impounded, a good chance the courts will order the car to be sold, the owner won't get the money.

Cheap RHD Ferrari anyone?

I've always used a magnetic one on my MkIV, slapped on the top surface of the boot lid.  Technically an invalid position but I think the only truely valid one for a MkIV/1500 is a modern number plate with incorporated UK letters!

Interesting thought here. Will any of the specialist white on black plate suppliers ADD a UK “device” to the plate.?

Yea, in this day and age it's really just a technical requirement, at least for driving in the EU and you'd really have to have pissed on some local policeman's chips to get written up for it - which is probably only a fine anyway.

Budget for 135 € a time, standard rate fine for a lot of minor motoring offences.

I would put my money on the Gendarme not knowing what the rules are anyway.

The reason that many get away with using an “A” frame towing device. Which are technically not allowed in many EU countries. Law. Enforcement are not 100% clued up on them. Although the Spanish “Guardia Civil” are, As I know to my cost!

By "A" Frame do you mean one where only the front wheels come off the ground?

They are legal in Germany BUT only if the car being towed is rod legal as well.

The second rubber hits the road it has to be road legal (there are minor exceptions).

In the UK, towing with an A-frame is the same as towing a trailer, and as long as the trailer and its load is less than 750kgs, then the trailer needs no brakes.  But there are few (no?) road cars as light as that: New rules for towing a trailer with a car from 16 December 2021 - GOV.UK (www.gov.uk)

Many motorhome owners like to tow a small car behind them, for mobility in camp, and several dealers offer systems that will allow the towed car to brake when the motorhome does.  But still, Spain and Germany have legislation that says that you may not tow a motor vehicle with another motor vehicle unless it is an "authorised breakdown vehicle".   Bugger!

But with fiendish cunning, so cunning as to deserve a degree in Cunning from Cunning University, one supplier says that you will not be towing a motor vehicle. You will be towing a car that is converted to a trailer that complies with all
EU trailer legislation!     Try explaining that to the Bundes Politzei or the Guardia Civil!

Good luck!

I`ve used "A" frames for towing Manual cars since the mid 90`s, when I had my first R-V. I`ve also used trailers for Auto`s. The subject causes a great deal of argument on Motorhome web site`s😂. Virtually impossible to reverse more that a couple of yards!!.🙄. But a decent tool for the Job nevertheless. 21.000 miles and 27 US states towing a Toyota Tacoma 4WD Auto Pickup, behind a 1999 Winnebago Adverturer. "Dollys" the devices that raise the front wheels off the ground to tow are actually ONLY legal in the UK for the recovery of a genuine broken down vehicle, hence rarely seen outside of the recovery trade.

I have left my GB sticker in the rear window and use a magnetic UK one when required.  What was intriguing waiting for ferries to/from Classic Le Mans were the number (over half) of cars with no country designator at all on display.

Yes I've noticed that before.  Sane goes for headlight deflectors

  • 3 weeks later...

I work in Paris and have a house in brittany.

In 30 years of driving to and within france i've never put a GB or Uk sticker on the car. I've never been stopped for not having one. I was stopped in Paris to have my Crit'air sticker checked and it was fine.

Abroad now UK quite often gets mistaken for Ukraine anyway...

When the change to UK came in we met some holidaying Brits in town and explained the confusion - they were happy to be mistaken for Ukranians as they thought they would get more sympathy.
