dougbgt6
OK. Big birthday coming up. What do I want? Dunno. How about a steering wheel for the beast? Club shop maybe? Leather? Wood? Needs a new boss? Does the horn still work? What diameter can I manage? Doug
Pete Lewis
I have a springalex woodrim, seems nice quality and a compromise cost Used a 15" on the 2000 had a 14" on the vitesse found a 13" hard work Horn pushes are often in need of a earth link adding , easy enough. Colin Lindsay
What height are you Doug? Best I can manage - for legroom whilst in the GT6 and for getting in and out with some vestige of dignity - is a 13" semi dished. I once had a very nice 14" woodrimmed wheel but impossible to get in and out around it.
Pete Lewis
it not Dougs legs thats the problem !!! Pete
Clive
Moto Lita or Momo would be my choice. Not he budget option, but a delight to hold. And in all honesty, woodrims look nice, but leather is way better to actually use.
dougbgt6
Colin, As Pete says, It's not height (5 11) that's the problem, it's the width! I have to buy my Levis from USA as waist size not available in the UK. However, USA still cheaper even with postage and tax. Why is that?!! Existing wheel is standard 14" happy with that, leather on the modern is nice but, I'm all for bling, so leaning towards wood. Doug
Pete Lewis
And a thought with old wrinkly fingers is a thick rim to get a grip on, My vitesse had a les weston original and the small rim needed a nasty cover to get any grip Pete
dougbgt6
The club shop catalogue has wood and leather rim wheels. The wood is as thick as the leather, quite chunky. I think Andy Cook has something similar on his GT6. I'll have to de-brief him at the next East Berks extravaganza. Doug
AndyTV8
I’m not a fan of wooden wheels, I love a leather motolita though..... your car, so your choice, you may want to ‘feel’ a few first. I bought my first one at Stoneleigh many years ago where the stall had a huge variety to try out. ...... Andy
Gully
I have a 14.5 inch flat Motolita wood rim on my GT6. Boss was easy to fix and horn works with no issues on centre push. The size and flat v. dished comes down to preferred driving position. I replaced the original flat 15 in wheel, which gave a great driving position for me, so stuck with something similar. I don't like the Club Shop wooden wheels - too chunky. Much prefer the more 'classic' wood rims. Gully

dougbgt6
Gully, Like it! Well, I like them all! Decisions, decisions. Interesting dash, electric screen washer? And a dial in a vent! Doug
Pete Lewis
guess theres nothing wrong with the design but the mountney type the rim is riveted and clipped to the spokes can all get a bit creaky and movement developes. My springalex is cut from a solid ring and has the option of the snazzy polished horn centre if you want some 'bling' this dark and wet saturday doug, im sure if you google dial in a vent you get some strange replies ha ! And a dial in a vent! Doug Hi Doug When I got the car the horn was wired to the aftermarket washer switch and I had the original wiper switch and steering wheel. The original wheel was tatty, despite me stitching on a leather cover and the horn push didn't work, plus the wiper switch was fine electrically and as a pump, but the mechanism waggled all over the place and it was only a matter of time before it broke! So one Christmas I fitted a new horn brush ring, boss and steering wheel, which relocated the horn to the centre of the wheel so I could use the washer switch to operate a newly fitted a electric washer pump that then allowed me to fit the 2 position Lucas rocker switch for the wipers. The voltmeter was installed in the eyeball vent by the previous owner - fits well, but I've been meaning to paint the silver bezel black to match the rest of the instruments for 4 years now... The steering wheel is, if I recall correctly, a 1960s Jaguar fitmemt - I'm not a fan of the riveted ones (which are half an inch more in diameter), so it was ideal. I bought it as an ex-display model from a specialist on eBay. I actually bought the boss first from the Club shop, but they sold me the wrong one (down to Motolita listing the wrong one) - I found out when I went to fit it and the chap I bought the wheel from couriered the right one to me overnight during the Christmas period so I could finish the job. He knew all about the erroneous listing! Gully
dougbgt6
Hideous! Wonder if they do it in Mimosa?
Colin Lindsay
Nice 13 inch semi-dished with padded rim to keep my delicate fingers warm and dampen any vibrations... I can get my knees in under it very easily plus the red stitching suits the red paintwork. £5 off eBay, boss extra. (I had one already)
dougbgt6
Just got Rimmer's sale catalogue. Moto Lita leather rimmed flat steering wheels, for £179 INCLUDING boss. That's not a bad price! What's going on? I mean Rimmer's, the Waitrose of the classic motoring world! Doug
Clive
I think you will find that is good value, especially once you actually use a mota lita. Beautiful things, but difficult to explain why they are so good until you use one. OK, Momo are as good as are some others, but no comparison the Mountney but even tye arehead and shoulders above the cheap wheels out there. Saying that, heard at Stoneleigh that a new Mountney had fallen apart in use. Spokes and rim parted company. Scary thought. Also heard a few tales of some wheels cracking on the spokes, and the manufacturer refusing to replace as they were not meant to be pulled about. Definitely a case where buying quality is the best value....

Doug Yes, their promotional catalogue landed on my doormat yesterday and when I flicked though and saw that offer I thought of you. Just check the boss comes with the horn pencil - the Motolita one works well with their boss and the original fit brush ring. Gully
dougbgt6
OK ordered it and it arrived this morning. The boss is matt black and has Moto Lita in raised letters inside the casting. There's a hole for the horn pencil, so I assume it IS Moto Lita and the right one for the car. Also there's a metal Triumph decal for the centre of the horn push. The wheel is matt black leather and the metal work suitably shiny, with Moto Lita engraving. It looks fantastic, a thing of beauty! I shall sit and look at it for the rest of the day. To buy the wheel and boss direct from Moto Lita costs almost £60 more, so a good deal from Rimmers. Anglefire
Bugger. I threw the catalogue away this morning - does this mean I have to get a new steering wheel now as they are on offer (This is for a Spitfire) (The one on mine is not the best!)
