rulloyd
I'm sure this has come up before but do I mount the filter vertically or horizontally (or does it matter). If vertically, engine side up is OK I presume? And recommended just ahead of the pump? Thank you! Rich
68vitesse
Orientation doesn't matter but direction of flow might, have one of the chrome glass ones on the tank outlet in the boot of my Vitesse. In the many years its been there never had to remove it and clean it. Regards Paul
NonMember
Yep, as Paul says, make sure the flow is in the direction of the arrow but the orientation isn't important. If it's vertical with flow upward, then you may find the filter appears to remain nearly empty but this is actually normal, albeit distinctly counter-intuitive. Pete Lewis
the nearer the tank you then filter the whole system not just the pump to carrbs or the opposite thoughts filter as close to the carbs as possiible remember the more you take a part and refit you stand a good chance of making the dreaded rubber slivers as the metal pipe cuts some off the inside of the fuel hoses and for hoses get Gates Barricade from club shop or anywhere else market bay rubber is often complete rubbish stick to branded Pete
dougbgt6
Mine is slightly off vertical just before the fuel pump. I've cleaned it out once in 5 years and it did have a small amount of crud in it. I have contemplated putting in a second filter just before the carbs to combat the dread slivers. Chris A
I have one just before the fuel pump and can't really see the advantage of a second one after that. Where would any deposits/impurities/slivers be coming from? If there are any in the system between the pump and carb then initially a filter would catch them but after that once cleared? I agree with Pete, the more you open up the system the more you risk leaks and contamination when replacing the filter. I've changed mine once in 5 years just because it became opaque. I cut it open and it looked pretty clean.

The dread rubber SLIVERS!!!! Little slivers of rubber from the inside of the fuel pipe, due to inserting/re-inserting metal pipe and general rubber deterioration. I've had my carbs off three times in quick succession due to blocked inlet valves. Doug
Chris A
That's my point, once the pipework isin place and purged of crud one filter before the pump should keep it clean?
