  1. As an old fart, I watch the Footage detectives on TPTV. Tonight they showed a reel showing a line up of Triumphs heading off on the ferry to the Le Mans race in what looks like the 70`s.Including footage from the race and a line up in a town. Worth a look and plenty of Reg. no`s to check to see if they are still around. Watch it on catch up. Steve
  2. I think if it was mine, ,I would stick it on an engine stand and remove the sump to inspect what`s in there, and then possibly check the shells and pistons/rings one at a time, putting a recon head on an old worn unknown bottom end from an engine that had low compression wouldn`t be for me. Of course if you buy another lump you won`t know what you`re getting unless it`s a recon. S
  3. I`m in Surrey but at the time I did the build on my Vitesse engine, a well known Triumph man was working at Maynards so he did my engine, I went back to them for my Herald 1500 engine as I liked the guys there and trusted them. Martin did the tuning. Alex now runs it after he took over from Mark Maynard. On the Jet, anti clock makes it richer, unless it`s a left hand thread. Haynes is correct, down for richer-up for leaner?. I always start at 2.5 full turns down from the bridge and go from there. Steve
  4. Winding the jet down makes it richer, which may account for the smoke, does it smell rich?, might be worth going up a couple of flats, how do the plugs look after a run?. I used Maynards Engines in Nailsworth near Stroud for a 1500 build, they tuned it on their rolling road for me. They have knowledge of many classics. Steve
  5. I use a ratchet spanner on the alternator pulley to turn it over without plugs in. S
  6. I have a Malpassi Filter King bolted to the engine Valance on my 2.5 Vitesse, with a regulator and a Filter, not glass though. Only because the car has a Facet Silver top pump in the boot. S
  7. Wedding went great, car was brilliant, I did plan to take the front seat out but couldn't as the photographer wanted to get in for the ride for photos at the long walk with the castle in the background. We had special permission and a park ranger escort through the deer enclosure to the Long Walk. Quite a few Stags in there (non Triumph). Looking forward to seeing the pictures when they get them. Couple of showers and one hood up trip but all in all a great day followed by copious amounts of Merlot as they didn't have Riocha in the York club. Steve
  8. Taking my Nephews bride and father in law to their wedding in Windsor Great Park Royal Chapel tomorrow, then on to the Long Walk for photo`s with the B + G. Thought I should make an effort as I`m not really a polisher. Really pleased how the old girl looks considering it was painted in 2009. Steve
  9. Try Wins, they keep a load of second hand parts. https://www.winsinternational.co.uk/ S
  10. I use a Spal 11 inch sucker fan fixed to the rad core. You might be able to see it in my Avatar. I do have an ally rad. It is Very close to the pulley. Experimenting with senders, I bought 3 of the same part number from 3 different suppliers to compare the resistance. The lowest was around 550 ohms, one was 700 and the other was nearer 800.All cold measurements, the different effects on where the needle sat from cold to normal were quite different. I settled for the one that sat nearest to normal. When stationary the gauge climbs fairly quickly until the fan kicks in, or I turn it on manually from the switch i fitted under the dash. It also can run for 30 seconds after switching off the engine. S
  11. I preferred to fit Vitesse style to my Herald when I returned it to it`s original colour 10 years ago. S Edit: apparently this post makes me a 1st Dan Triumphero, do I get a cape?.
  12. Sidelights and brake lights on together and no indicators is often a sympton of poor earthing on the back lights via the ring terminal to the body. S
  13. Must be from my 1st car, a 1965 Mini Minor 850 with a floor start and pudding stirrer gearstick. Never actually had it on the road legally as i crashed it through next doors garden wall trying (unsuccessfully) to do a handbrake turn when I was 17. S
  14. I don`t know what you mean Colin, I re-read it and it looks fine. How do I remove the Edited by Steve P bit?🙂 S
  15. My Herald has the original gaiter and the cardboard surround stapled.I am a bit reluctant to disturb it, I think the cables are the originals and need adjustment at the handle end. Done the wheel end but not enough. S

    Fuel spill

On my Vitesse, which has a 2.5 engine and HS6 carbs, also a tubular exhaust manifold, I have 2 heat shields under the carbs which are angled away to clear the exhaust, so fuel running down should not contact the exhaust directly but drip down around the turret/chassis area. Steve
  17. I just used an old cheap flat screwdriver with the handle cut off so it would fit in a battery drill. Anticlockwise iirc. Steve
  18. I took my 2.5 Vitesse CV to just over 100mph once, only once.It felt like the back end wanted to come round and the front was lifting. With a tuned 2.5,o/d box and 3:27 diff I think it could easily do 120 + but not with me driving. S
  19. They fit over the seal but not flush as the side is deeper and hits the Herald floor, god knows where I got them. Maybe my old mini I sold in 1985. S
  20. Clearing my garage out I came across these ali trims, can't remeber where they came from or how long I've had them. Anyone identify them?, I have a Herald and a Vitesse CV. Some sort of door seal cover obviously. S
  21. I wouldn`t worry too much, my 2.5 Vitesse has the filter at 8 o clock and gives instant pressure on start up and no rattles I can detect, It has only done 15k miles from rebuild though. I use Valvoline VR1 and Fram filters common on Fords back in the day I believe. Steve
  22. I believe the longer bolts are there to allow shimming out of the hook for bonnet adjustment. I need to do this on my 13/60. S
  23. Are they the same as Dunlop LP923?. As fitted to my Herald. S
  24. The modern offerings from the usual suppliers are rubbish, they last about 20mins before becoming intermittent. At least mine did on the Vitesse. Going to try and rebuild the old one. S
  25. This is a new Dab unit,I opened it up, no fuses. Steve
