  1. We've got a new pound coin that is apparently unfakeable. Anyone want a sample? I've got millions in the garage...
  2. I thought at one point it was the heat from the air filters that had warped the overflow bottle, but I think now he means that the modern day replacement seals, as in the overflow bottle top, are not as good as the originals. Yes? BTW anyone seen snow yet?
  3. I tried the old UJ version as sold by Bill Davies and binned it very quickly due to the vibrations coming up the steering column. Personal choice, but I didn't like it at all. If you're buying one of the replacements, the FAM 1718 parts, check around as there's almost £20 difference between sellers, and similarly with the UJ version - they sell for £19.95 on eBay, so don't pay up to £40 for essentially the same item.
  4. Does it give you 6 gears too?

  6. I'm a bit mystified by the wording of the original post; I assumed it was the air filter box seal that had gone, but we seem to have ended up with overflow bottle caps, and I'm trying to work out the link / cause? Anyway like Doug I put my bottle(s) through the dishwasher, they came out the same stained yellow colour but slightly cleaner. It appears the only solution is a new one, which ends up the same dirty yellowy-brown within a few years.
  7. Early GT6 screw straight into the tank so a metal pipe all the way underneath; not sure if this was continued in later models, but you'll see when you get down below. Otherwise as Clive has posted, sometimes a flexible pipe at the fuel pump / front outrigger area.
  8. Excellent video and a lovely paint colour!!
  9. There's quite a gap between the spare wheel and the board, particularly if you fit the wheel the correct way round ie the 'face' goes against the floor and is secured by a screwed hook or plate. That would require a lot of packing! You'll be able to tell the thickness of your third panel by the way the carpet lies over it; if there's a visible ridge, it's thicker. Mine are all painted ply; quite solid and reasonably well made, but still fiddly to slide into the clips along the rear panel as they're too thick. Another way to brace the wheel panel is to glue another panel to the underside, cut smaller so as to fit within the supports but following the same outline. Quite neat if done well, and of course invisible from above.
  10. Mine are both aftermarket / DIY versions and the only caveat is that if you make them too thick they'll not fit into the clips at the rear. The petrol tank side has foam where it rests on the tank; two or three strips, but the spare wheel side just hangs, supported only by the sides, and is susceptible to anything heavy being placed on top. Perhaps a thin metal brace would help here?
  11. The Herald estate is the same, colour coded roof bars; I must check to see if the colour order is the same across the range. How short is your headlining - half an inch or a massive amount? They need to be tensioned so may have to be warmed and stretched into position, but check the other end; too much may have been used here with the knock-on effect at the other end. There is a slight - very slight - amount of back and forth movement at the stays so have a look and see where the material is in regards to the stays - centred, or off to one side, and this may give a clue. The last Herald estate I started - and it's still not finished - I started in the middle and worked outwards towards both front and back.
  12. Weren't we all advised way back in the day to change rubber seals before switching to silicon? (Anyway Dave I've no intention of changing my engine oil for silicon.)
  13. I'll stick to the original recommendation; silicone has not so far been sold to me as a worthy replacement.
  14. ...which wouldn't be either a cost or production issue, so they must know something...
  15. But are the ones you have seen new, or off a car where they have been bent by years of use? I have completely flat ones in my garage roofspace, and have seen NOS versions at shows that are also flat, so they can't all have been manufactured incorrectly. If they're meant to be bent, then which side goes to which? High side left, or high side right? Or maybe it's bent downwards rather than up?
  16. But they should all lie flat when placed on the floor, not have one end sticking up...
  17. A couple of diagonal metal bracing struts would assist, but I don't think ply or millboard alone will make any difference.
  18. There used to be a supplier at Mallusk who would scan your car's bodywork and mix paint to match. I'll check if he's still in business; but there are bound to be others about. I had paint mixed once by Halfords; never again.
  19. If I really needed original O/S. It's only a rubber strip after all, and avoiding the really rubbish ones, there are better quality versions out there for nowhere near that amount.
  20. Does the Spitfire use double valve springs?
  21. Yes; if anything the Spitfire head would be rarer so I can't see anyone complaining, if indeed there are any actual differences eg in valve seats etc between the two heads. Send us a photo of the exhaust port side and the underside and we can compare. (An 8 port head would be nice... I want first dibs!)
  22. LOL . You just had to try.
  23. I could show you an identical photo!! My wife's tyre overtook her on the A1, my daughter looked over and said "there's someone's wheel".... it was theirs from the horsetrailer they were towing.... exactly the same as yours. Two sides remaining on the wheel while the rest was history. You're lucky if that was on the actual car you were driving!
