You just park your left foot in the footwell and forget it`s there!. 90%+ of American Cars are auto`s. all 3 of my U-S R-V`s where auto`s. I used to take an Auto to work on one ocasion, and then spend all day driving a Scania Truck with 4 over 4 transfer box with Split rear Axle. Effectively 16 gears!. That gives your left leg a workout!. And then there are Tracked Vehicles!. Pete

Ford Model T`s, are an "interesting" drive. Can`t quite remember which pedal does what but it`s sort of akin to playing an organ!. Fortunately, both our "moderns" are Auto`s. Pete

Which is the Toughest Differential for a 2.5L Vitesse?
PeteH replied to Wagger's topic in Drivetrain & Rear Axle
Hi If, I remember right, and it`s not since the 80`s, Doing full lock u-turns, led to tyre scrub?, and extra stress on the front steering and suspension too.? Pete -

I think , IF I wanted to be a "Hooligan" at the traffic lights. I wouldn`t naturally choose a small chassis Triumph?. Now. a tuned 2L Pinto, in a stripped out Mk1 Escourt?. Maybe. So long as you can avoid the trees!. Pete -
So I Think Is New Zealand?. As well as many of the Carribean Islands that had been Brit; colonies back in the day. Now that can be "fun" island hopping, If it was a French (or Spanish) colony, your on the Left. Pete

Fitting Herald driver's footwell carpet
PeteH replied to Patrick Taylor's topic in Bodywork & Fittings
Hi The drawback to that, especially in a convertible, is that the accelerator would need to be unbolted OR the carpet then cut, to remove the carpet if neccessitated by (say) a wet floor?. Pete -
Ah! Yes BUT the Japanese still drive on the left as do we. One of few countries world wide that still do, BTW. Those that do are largely former British Colonies, and islands Eg Malta. Majority of OLD british Motorcycles had the gear change on the right side too. Pete

Allegedly Quite Painfull?. Can you still get the "cream" for them?. Or one of those doughnut air cushions?. That page is from an Owner Manual, dated 1962. Came with all the other documentation for the 13/60. Pete
-
Castrol Straight SAE30. That went into virtually every Motorcycle and car in the 50`s. By 1962, the "multigrade" oils where becoming more used. The Herald Owners Manual for the 1200, recomends by then the use of a Multigrade. Modern Engines, made on modern production machinery, are produced to closer tolerances, using modern materials. Those factors are part of the need for "synthetic" oils, that and the use of Cat`s and particle filters makes Oil Choice more critical. E.g. My V6 Sprinter diesel REQUIRES a certain grade of oil. in order not to cause damage, And is the reason why an oil change cost`s an arm and leg too!. Pete

Rear Roof to Deck Fixings - Herald 1200 Saloon
PeteH replied to Colin's topic in Bodywork & Fittings
The problem is, anyone under the age of 50, (well maybe 40?) probably has never heard of nor used Whitworth nor AF. So making the assumption that 11mm is close enough is not un-expected?. Pete -
The stuff you get out of skips?. A Bicycle, Two Barbecues (one gas fired), Enough Oak faced Laminate to floor the "man-shed", 14 lengths of 9x2 inch timber, cut to aprox 8 to 10ft long. My local Propane gas supplier is also a steel fabrication Co, Often have a rummage for usable steel offcuts. 6 or 7 lengths of galvanised scaffolding on one occasion. As for "missing" spanners, Mine stopped disapearing on a regular basis, once my two son`s left home!. When one Grandson, stated "tinkering", and using my Garage. We treat him to a full set for his 18th Brithday. Pete

Back in the 80`s a collegue, was working at a Nat Trust property, they where taking down some unsafe hot houses, He copped for all the redundent coal fired cast iron Boiler, radiators etc;. and fitted them in his garage with the boiler in it own little open fronted "shed" outside. Working in his gargage in winter was quite "toasty". Old Boiler was fired on anything that would burn. Pete

Racking my brain to think where I had seen that arrangement. BMW R100RS.👍. There is a similar system on (some) US R-V`s with the Power Brake Boost system too, Did`nt prevent the issue with the R-V though!! Pete
-
Change DOT4 at least every 2 years, even on well used vehicles. I experienced loss of braking due to "fluid boil", on a 9tonne R-V once!. It is a definite "brown trouser" moment!. As for your New Fluid showing "iffy". I would suspect the tester?. I`ve recently done my `06 P-107, because I had no idea when it was last done. I treat myself to a Vaccuum kit to speed the job up single handed. Pete

Herald 13/60 manifold water leak - repair or options?
PeteH replied to Colin Lindsay's topic in Fuel System
Whilst I have no evidence to back it up, I assume it is possible that this "warming" device was part of an early attempt at mitigating emmisions,?. Perhaps by "improving" charge quality?, as opposed to just a more rapid warmup?. Pete -
Suggestions for power take-off for screenwash pump
PeteH replied to Colin Lindsay's topic in Electrical System
Strangely, the one I had, would have been to large for the Negative terminal.? Pete -

Hi Curiosity?. Was it "converted" using the saloon tub and bespoke Hood. Or was a C-V rear tub grafted on?. I ask, because back in the 80`s, I was "offered" the full back end from a crashed Herald C-V, to hybridise our Vittese Saloon. Only a lack of cash at the time really stopped me doing it. Pete -

Hi Posted These Earlier on another thread. My take is that it would be possible to get a 10mm copper tube inserted, if you cut the ends off the existing 1/2" Steel tube?. Pete -

That want`s fileing under the same heading as "A Long Stand", "bucket of 1/2" holes" (or steam), Tartan Paint?. Every Aprentice fell for one or the other. Pete -
Hi Just been in the Garage. Couple of pictures may help?. The O/D of the Pipe is 12.5mm (1/2") I/D of pipe is 10mm. It is possible that if you cut the steel pipe flush a 10mm O/D copper pipe could be run through the existing and similarly connected into the line?. Pete

But only after severial pints of Yorkshire Black Sheep Bitter? Cheer’s Oh and hail and welcome to the mad house Pete -
Some years ago (about 10 now I think) I had a Exhaust and silencer fabricated in stainless by a company in Warrington, for an American R-V. When I went to collect it they where doing bespoke stuff for a Porsche 911. and a couple of BMW? cars. Considering the size of that thing, 350 quid I thought was quite reasonable?. Been searching My Archived Invoices, But I cannot find it sadly. Pete
