Genuine question?. What was the original idea of the "dimmer"?. I know the Hull police had a "dimming" facility on the dipped lights of patrol cars (Late 60`s/70`s). But never heard of it elsewhere?. Pete

Your quite right of course. But the "bean counters" would view it as an "enhancement", for the cost of a few feet of cable.😁 How many times do manufacturers do a few quid of "facelift" halfway through a car`s life cycle, and then proceed to call it a "new" model?. Pete

Whilst this is likely not the case. It is not unknown for thief's to leave a stolen vehicle for several days, the object being to discover if the vehicle has a hidden tracking device. Usually though they tend to pick a quiet trading estate or similar. Pete

Steering wheel to column nut thread size?
PeteH replied to Colin Lindsay's topic in Chassis, Suspension & Steering
That`s 28TPI. If you look at the photo`s I posted and count the threads it`s exactly 10 threads, and my thread gauge (28tpi) is a "fit". 9/16 UNF is 18TPI. Colin`s estimate of 7 threads would give 19 TPI. I suggest it`s probably 18TPI. Pete -
You`ve heard of the "Golden Rivet" then?.😁. Conscription ended circa 1963/4, (initially those in training/education deferment, where still called up). BAOR was dismantled following the Removal of the Berlin Wall and "Glasnoz". As I recall.? On the premise that the "Cold War", was over?. Pete

Guessed it`s something along those lines. It was more of a surprise (to me) that the Wiring drawings where in the Haynes Manual. But It was 1986 when we had the Vitesse, so memory can be forgiven!. Ballast systems where a "popular" manufacturer "upgrade". It the attempt to improve reliability?. Pete

I`v only got the one "project". But the "other" demands on time, seem to take priority😭. So I am resigned to another year yet, only 6 and counting so far!. I see it as giving me something to engineer, as opposed to festering behind a desk.? It IS actually progressing, just at a pace slower than a snail!. Cill`s to-day. (hopefully). Pete

Before In installed webroot, I got dozens a day of these and similar, adds for viagra and other stuff. Now they get picked and binned before they reach the mailbox. Pete

The Age (1971) would suggest that a UN thread form is likely, In fact, enlarging the photo would suggest a flat thread. Although the mystery remains as to why the TPI is inconsistent with UNF. IE; 28TPI (UNFS) as opposed to 18TPI (UNF)?. Pete -
A PO hasn't fitted a filter in the fuel line?. I had a car which had one just forward of the rear wheel well, It corroded and leaked, stank of petrol, £5 replacement. Pete

Looking at the GT6 wiring Diagram(s). It would appear that the 12V supply is via the ign; switch on the Mk1 and 2, and only the Mk3 is direct from the Solenoid, and not via the ignition switch?. I had forgotten that Haynes lump(ed) the GT6 and Vitesse in the the one W/S manual. I never let go of W/S manuals!. I think I have around 50!. Pete

Those type of "base" car, where typical low level "rep mobiles", Aimed primarily at the Fleet Market. The interior of that one is not unlike the one I took my driving test in, That was part of the BSM fleet. Even as late as the 80`s, when I came shore-side doing Boiler examination work we got cars without Radio`s, and seats with little or no support. But the company got dozens cheap. Pete

I saw that. But the website is "potentially compromised". So I declined to look. But the Australian E-Bay item suggests likewise. that UNS (special) sizes are "out there". I suspect they will be 60deg thread form?. Pete -

BSF. is only 16 TPI. so that don`t fit Either!. No BSP sizes come anywhere near?. Browsing the "net" I have come across reference to UNFS? which is allegedly Unified Special threads. But nothing (so far) matches 9/16 x 28TPI?. I thought in a 60 year, world wide, career I had come across them all. It exists, I have one, but what? I am unsure?. And this comes up on E-Bay (Australia). https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/152292227571 If the threads are still in reasonable condition A BSP (28TPI) thread file might restore to an acceptable standard?. (1/8BSP is 28TPI but only 3/8" (9mm) O/D) Pete -
Isn't the issue with "programs" that they have to be somewhat "scripted". There is no Real "fly on the wall" stuff, realistically. The research has to be done, camera`s have to be fitted, positioned, lighted etc;. And once they have, they have to have people willing to talk to them, very few members of the "public" can string two words together, with a camera pointed in their faces. So it`s down to the "pro`s", multiple takes and with the end result you know has had to be scripted?. With Banger`s and Cash, the fact that Derek has been auctioning for years, makes him "easier" talking to the camera, but someone has to edit the footage?. Pete

That would compare with what I found too. I dug out the old 13/60 column and my thread gauges. The Thread is 28TPI and 55deg thread form. The O/D is 9/16". But the Nut (strangely) is a dead ringer for 27mm!. 27mm Is near to 5/8 bsf?. But a better fit is 1-1/16AF. However British Cycle thread. 9/16" is only 26TPI and a 60Deg thread form?. Pete -

Typical!!. Cannot find my "Zeuss" charts!!. Sod`s law!. I think, from remote memory, 9/16 UNF was indeed 24TPI?. It`s a 60 deg thread form?. Which would make (about) 1mm pitch? If you need a (very) rough check? Just to complicate matters, Some online sources State 9/16 UNF to be 18TPI! (1.4mm pitch) and 3/8 UNF is 24 TPI. I may get the definitive later. IF I can find the OLD steering column. Which got "archived" when I put the PAS unit in. Pete -
OMG!!. Handbags!. Mrs H, has serious arthritis, so hers are (have to be) "reasonable" sized. However, granddaughter, left hers on the floor, so Gramp`s picks it up before someone trip`s over it!. Damn thing weigh`s a tonne. What DO they find to put in them, Felt like 1/2 a dozen house bricks!!🤣. I reckon they will all finish up with arthritic shoulders?. Flywheel in the freezer, SWMBO` opens chest freezer and ejects said item just a I appear from the house juggling the (very) hot ring I have retrieved from the oven, "interesting conversation" follows!. (that was 1970`s, marriage has survived) Pete

I supect there are a few "twitchy bums" in Whitehall and elsewhere wishing perhaps it was still there?. For a lot of my Generation, it was their first experience of "foreign parts", curtessy of "conscription".😀 Pete

Back in the day, when I was "on the tools" we where warned never to re-use "second hand" spring washers?. Under service conditions they can back off, certainly often enough to give concern. Like never re-using "stiff nuts" either. OR (somewhat surprisingly to many) Don`t grease Wheel Nuts!, just torque and then check after 50 miles or so. Pete

Back in the 70`s, We had a Cortina. Weird issue, kept cutting out. Would run until it got a bit warm under the Bonnet and then splutter and die. After a lot of searching, the cause was found to be the HT lead from the coil to the distributor as it warmed up was moving closer to a bulkhead bolt and arcing from a "radio suppressor" fitted in the lead, killing the engine. Spotted on the first occasion it happened at night when the spark/arc was visible. Of course every time someone had checked the ignition, the lead was moved away from the bolt and the engine would then run again. Pete
