  1. Mines a 13row cooler -from Rimmers as it happens in a kit with braided hoses and thermostat. £190 delivered 2019 @JohnD I did look at mounting it to the side of the water rad - but mine is a full width rad and no room - so it will be at the bottom of the rad - possibly between the rails rather than all above - which sounds like Colins is mounted I was tempted to get the car out of the garage this afternoon and go for a spin - but as soon as the sun comes out and I notice, it disappears again and the wet stuff falls out again.
  2. Not that I have time to fit the cooler yet - but making plans (for Nigel ) for Christmas Thinking of drilling the chassis rails and fitting a couple of rivnuts on each to fix the bracket to and then mount the cooler onto the bracket, all in front of the radiator - much like Rogers or Sam's - not sure whether it will hang down or be on top yet. I'm tempted for on top to avoid damage being below. Does this seem sensible?
  3. My spitfire smelt of petrol at one point. Can’t remember why now, but I think it was perished fuel lines. But had to seal every hole in the wall between the garage and house - including the roof joists, it was so bad. the smell has gone now though. but the very worst smell was when I was a student. One of the guys had very smelly feet. Even freshly washed they could kill a budgy at 20paces.
  4. I've put 20ltrs of the stuff in mine since April 😄 but I have done 16k miles since then too. And I've not driven it until yesterday for 2 weeks as I've been in London on a project so took the train! Average MPG being 52 which I'm happy with - especially given the Land rover I had for 7 years averaged 24 Though was a lot of fun. Both my fuel and maintenance bills have come down a lot since then
  5. My previous car to the Skoda was also a diesel - but was definitely exciting ! A bmw 530d touring. 0-60 in less than 6seconds and topped out at 155 mph. Neither claim verified by me - but was very quick and did handle very well. Shame it wasn’t also comfortable! And averaged about 44mpg. Over 50 on a good run but only high 30’s round town.
  6. I’ve had a diesel car for as long as I can remember. First one was a Peugeot 205grd with a gti body kit on it. When diesel was significantly cheaper than petrol. I did go back to petrol with my first company car, but reverted back to diesel at the first replacement. I’ve then had about 8 or 9 diesel cars one for 7 years (and 174000 miles) the others between 2 and 4 years my current car is a Skoda Superb 2ltr estate - yes it has adblue- not had to run it to clean the particulate filter yet- probably because I do a lot of miles so gets hot enough. but smelly? No not really. Noisy? No not really. demonised? Absolutely. Are diesel cars the right choice for everyone? No they are not - if you have to regularly run it to clean the filter I’d say it was the wrong choice. Same thing car be said about petrol and electric cars.
  7. To be honest, its at least not going to wreck your engine unlike petrol in diesels. It will smoke for a while, but just keep refilling with petrol as Pete says drive till its pretty clear!
  8. Finally got it all back in and the right wires going to the right gauges/switches (managed to swap two - fuel gauge and headlight switch. I even took photographs but still mixed up blue with green/black. I blame the dirt and lighting ) radio is also working properly my only issue is me. I lent over the handbrake to refit the dash screws - and thick I may have cracked a rib. 😳
  9. Thanks for all the reply’s! Doug I’m only down for one night back home tomorrow. I am back down for a week next week but will probably be very busy and working late - tonight was bad enough - our the house at 5:30 This morning and got to the hotel Just gone 7 - must get something to eat! Roger, as ever thanks for the pictures - as well as Sam. Makes a lot more sense now! As for hoses, I bought the thermo kit from Rimmers with the braded hoses which are screw onto flared pipes. Look and feel substantial so I think will be fine. When I get to my proper computer I will look a lot more closely 😃
  10. It’s not that glamorous Pete. I’m working in London and I’m stopping down tonight. Saves another 5am getup.
  11. Thanks Doug I’ll look later when I get to my hotel.
  12. I’ve bought a mocol thermostatically controlled oil cooler for my spitfire 1500 now I know I probably don’t need one but let’s not go there. question is, does anyone have any pictures and advice as to how to fit it - pictures would be great as it comes with no instructions what so ever!
  13. dash is back in. Just have to fit a couple more screws to the trim on the bottom but looks ok I think.
  14. My dad drilled out the two holes this afternoon so the seatbelt warning light now sits flush to the dash Also fitted the new rubber seals - which are round section and the gauges sit so much better now - also had a bit of a clean up. forecast is better tomorrow so hoping to be able to get the dash all back in and the electrics sorted.

    Starter issues

My daughters 107 would start sometimes first time and other times it would skip on the flywheel. Changed the starter and been fine since - but you could see the witness marks on the ring gear.... I suspect the solenoid was a little weak and wouldn't drag it in all the time
  16. The new rings came yesterday, as did some thin wall wire in a couple of different colours and sizes so I can sort the fag lighter out as well as the radio switched feed.
  17. Thanks Colin - I've order the kit from Paddocks now - but I see that they also do chrome bezels - not that mine are bad (And that slightly worn patener is better I think!)
  18. Looks like it! Never thought of looking at paddocks. 🤷‍♂️ I was looking at all the specialist gauge restorers 😂
  19. Oh and does anyone know where I can get some rubber gaskets to go around the gauges?
  20. I've ordered a few odds and sods of wiring tonight - just a few colours and capacities to be able to add to the harness in the right colours. I've also managed to get the speedo drive out of the speedo - wouldn't come out! Still not found a suitable bulb holder and bulb for the instrument lights
  21. Wiring isn't there for the fag lighter either! Wiring isn't an issue I can soon add that.
  22. Mine is 100psi on startup. Hasn't blown up yet.
  23. A question. At the back of the black plastic trim, there is a bulb holder. Where can I get a suitable one from? Or a part number?
  24. Started changing the dash this afternoon. the left side was easy enough - though I’ve found the cigarette lighter doesn’t have any power to it 🤔. And the seatbelt warning light has two locating holes in the dash - they are part drilled at the back but didn’t go through so dad hasn’t drilled them out as I didn’t know they were there until today. so do I get dad to drill them out now or cut off the locating lugs. and I’m struggling to get the drivers side dash out - no, scratch that, I’m struggling to get the speedo drive out. Must consult the manual.
