  1. Despite the heat I've had the car up on stands and had a look and push and pull on the CV joints and I can't see any significant play in any of them - though I can see a witness mark on a couple of the circlips where they have rotated - so I guess they can't be tight - but I was unable to get a 2thou feeler behind any of them - except the one with the witness mark - though that is not that side that I can hear the ticking from...... I even got the wheels to spin in 2st when in the air and still nothing heard.
  2. Thanks that is reassuring. Clive, no the UJ's haven't been changed in the last 3 or 4 years of my ownership - and non of the receipts I have detail them - but that doesn't mean it didn't happen! Freelander ones sound interesting too - I've already got freelander studs on the wheels so its turning very slowly into a Land Rover 😂
  3. Not sure if you have to Sorn it before taxing it - but could be wrong! other than that no sounds right.
  4. When I took the car out last weekend (and previously to be fair) I noticed a ticking from the back passenger side. Its not prop as the speed isn't that fast compared to the road speed any thoughts as to what it might be? Cv joint I guess is favourite? The bigger question is, can I still drive it safely like that? i was hoping to do a 160mile round trip tomorrow to a model air show near Grantham - especially since it’s its 42nd Birthday 🎂
  5. Went out to kenilworth castle this afternoon just for a run out. Forecast wasn’t great - but was actually ok. No pictures of the car from the outside but swmbo took some driving back
  6. Fitting a new clutch with the box in the car is easy enough. The only thing you are changing on the box is the bearing. The rest is attached to the engine flywheel.
  7. Just get an engine stand - much more versatile for an engine rebuild as you can spin it around! Granted afterwards it's not a lot of use though - but could always sell it on - infact you could just get a second hand one in the first place.
  8. That’s a good idea to be fair. I bought a set of large spanner’s that included a 46mm - which is the metric equivalent. https://rover.ebay.com/rover/0/0/0?mpre=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.ebay.co.uk%2Fulk%2Fitm%2F382498679870 Works a treat
  9. Since I’ve replaced the head and retightened the head bolts and redone the tappet adjustments a couple of times, it’s now sounding a lot quieter on the top end. But I did buy a new set of tappets with bushed rockers some time ago so the pads are nice and smooth and now I’ve got the gap right (the paperwork with the cam -PH1 a is wrong and the conversion from metric to imperial is wrong, so was 2thou too loose. As it is they are 12/14thou inlet/exhaust compared to 10thou standard.
  10. Mines much happier with the 82’c stat and full width rad. Number plate position doesn’t seem to make a lot of difference that I’ve noticed.
  11. I bought a new full width rad for mine - and since putting in the correct thermostat, sits just under 1/2 way on my gauge whatever it would seem. My number plate is here:
  12. Mine is similarly propped against the garage wall. I would like it out if the way but have no real space due to the lights. Its not been used on the car for ages - drove it roofless when I went out in the wintertime I
  13. Misread your post Doug. Though I will blame either the cold I picked up yesterday or the hayfever - whichever this snotty nose and sinus pain is. And I took the tablets too😂
  14. You do still have to check the gap as the heal of the points does wear down - but I do accept that the gap is a lot less critical and you don't get the pit on the points due to the current through them.
  15. Could be a multi-coloured led. Personally I don’t see the need to go electronic ignition in a standard car. I can’t think what benefit they really bring to the party.
  16. How funny is that! I did exactly the same thing with my beetle - until the last time I did the job when I borrowed a massive 3/4” drive torque wrench off the local parts shop - it was so easy to do them up with it - one handed I seem to remember rather than handing off the scaffold pole - I must have also bust about 4 normal wrenches. 😂
  17. I did the same as Gully and got mine - but with tyres as well from JBW - they didn't have the size of wheel I selected originally - or the tyres - but at no additional cost to me, went up a wheel width and tyre make. I've just looked up the invoice for them as I couldn't remember what I got 😂 5.5x 13" and 165/70 Falken tyres and 12 x 1.5mm taper chrome nuts. (I uprated the wheel studs using freelander ones) - The whole lot came to £365
  18. I have no idea - didn't see it in the pits - was a slightly weird weekend and had less time at the track than I would have prefered.
  19. I've finally put some of the shots on my website. https://www.mark.colston-online.co.uk/Motorsport/Hochenhiem/index.html
  20. Sorry I posted before I saw the multitude of replies since Clive’s original one 🤷‍♂️
  21. Thanks Clive you have reminded me the reason! the lack of fuses on the lights I think was due to the poor quality fuses back in the day - though why having a fire under the dash is better than the lights going out is one for the philosophers to discuss 😂 and I would have thought that in the 70’s they would be ok. Well at least for the warranty period anyway as they do lack a certain something compared to modern fuse boxes. I have one to fit in mine when I get some time.
  22. I prefer to crimp and not solder as solder can cause issues - I can't think what they are off hand - its too early!
  23. I've not used electronic ignition for years. Probably nigh on 30! Though the one I had fitted to my last beetle I think got moved to a friends Metro - which after about 20years in a garage was brought back to life a few weeks ago - and the electronics still works! The only real benefit of one that uses the points, is that as said, less wear on the face of the contacts (The heal still wears though obviously!) and that the negative to the coil is broken much cleaner so the spark is in theory a bit stronger. Practical terms? Who knows! I run traditional points in my Spitfire.
