  1. In my case I use a Hamilton's cover, need to get a new one this autumn though, biggest cause of wear to the cover are that the seams come unglued so need regular regluing and our cats ! They love using the car cover to sleep on and strop their claws on when they climb on the car. As for paint damage no real problems but will second the comments about sharp bits on Heralds and the need protect the cover. I leave the windows slightly open in winter (cover is on of course) to aid airing and do try to remove cover on warm sunny days from time to time, I also run the car a little in winter as well.
  2. All this Boris stuff is enough to make me go and live abroad. Oh, I do! 🙄
  3. I noticed it is for sale in Germany, must be their sense of humour. Err... do they have one? OK so they do have one but they take it seriously, if you see what I mean, and use it with caution.😀
  4. Hi all, I need to consult the collective brain. I have a small problem with the passenger door handle push button in so much as it comes out beyond its normal position. I doesn’t come off simply comes out of the handle, on the spindle but beyond its housing. To use it I have to turn the button so the groove lines up with the raised part. I now open the door from the inside. I have looked at the parts diagram on the Canley site but can’t work out which bit actually holds the assembly in place to stop it coming to far forward. I could dismantle the door car etc to look and then try and order the required part but would prefer to do it only once. The car is used a lot at the moment so wouldn’t want to be driving with a missing door card etc. I need/ want to order new brake caliper pistons so will add the door handle part to the same order. The new pistons are to cure a sticking brake. Earlier this week it was a serious problem while out for a 160 kilometer run. Thanks for the replies that I am sure will arrive in less time than it take for oil pressure to build up in a cold engine
  5. White nail polish works as well as paint & it dries straight away.
  6. I don't want to mention the 'B' word, but . . . In theory when it has happened purchases between the UK and the EU should be free of the exporting counties VAT but subject to the importing counties equivalent. Duty free should also be reintroduced. But who knows. 🙄
  7. Doug: for better beer we used to go over to Earls Court - the was a pub that sold Newcastle brown . .
  8. Many years ago, early 70's, when I was living & working in london me an' mi mates would go to a pub ( can't be sure of its name but think it was The Greyhound) on the fulham Palace Road at the week-end. They had live bands, free to get in but the beer was overpriced and not the best. One night the compare announced that the band due to appear had cancelled but not to worry he had a replacement - Status Quo. This was after their hit 'Pictures of Matchstick men'. Normally the pub programmed rock bands so there was a collective groan at the thought of a light weight pop band, some people even left. Surprise - they started playing the type of music we all know now! Personnnaly I have aways thought the 'cancelled' band was all a cover up and it was always going to be the Quo to test out their 'new' sound.

    Cylinder N°1

The exception that confirms the rule 😀 I won't tell my French friend, I don't want to have to pay for the apero next time we meet 🍷

    Cylinder N°1

Thanks guys. Very diplomatic answers, nobody is wrong - both right. Brits & French will continue to live together happily as we have always done (apart from the odd small war etc)

    Cylinder N°1

First of all the disclaimers:- 1. It was very hot yesterday so my brain could have overheated 2. I was talking to French classic owners ( and we all know what the French are like. P.S. be careful as I also have French nationality) So, my question which is cylinder N°1 in terms of connecting a stobe light? I said it was the front one, closest to the fan. My friend who ownes a Simca Aronde said it is the one closest to the fly wheel. We asked another owner who agreed with the flywheel answer. So I lost 2 votes to 1. 😨 Please come to the aid of a befuddled old (insert noun of choice) Thanks 😵
  12. Interesting, do you think there would be a market for pine scented Adblue? 😀
  13. The unread heading gives you 2 options. Top of the page with the first unread comment or First unread comment. This is the setting I use and go from there

    Favourite tool

I've got one of these and I still have the yellow plastic box it came in with a selection of posidrive screws and nuts & bolts. Quality that lasts.
  15. When they started building the pyramids they needed someone the plan the delivery of the materials and I had just qualified, so I was still young when I got the job.
  16. Coincidentally they also spell out in erly Egyptian the equivalent of :- Mind the gap
  17. I'm a little further south in the Orne close to the border with the Sarthe
  18. SORRY? CAN'T HEAR YOU. YOU NEED TO TYPE BIGGER!
  19. Thanks Colin, I can save a bit of money then by not doing the bonnet. As for 'local' scrapyards, I'll need to set off after breakfast & take a packed lunch with me. i.e. they are few and far between in my rural setting. I think I'll get some sticky back stuff for the bulkhead and similar areas as you suggest.
  20. I'm thinking of adding some more sound deanening material to my 13/60 convertible. Firstly: Is it worth putting any on the inside of the bonnet? From the photos I've seen with bonnets open on various models lots of owners haven't done this so I guess it isn't worth it and is better just to concentrate on the inside of the car. Secondly: If it is worth it I would want to use a product that is black, not the shiny aluminium types. Do any of you have any recommendations. Thanks
  21. i have no experience with the 1200, I have a 13/60. Last year I misread the instructions for adjusting the mixture and ended up with exactly the same problem. Started fine as usual, ran great. If I stopped the engine and left the car for a while it restarted ok but if I stopped it and then tried to restart it wouldn't. so maybe you have an over rich mixture? Good luck, I'm sure someone here will have the cure.
  22. Thanks for the input. If I am still strugling after Pete's method I'll go round to my local mechanic who has done other work on it and get him to check it.
  23. The car and engine is a standard UK model. I'll try your method when the weather permits. Thanks for the help
  24. An update on where I am with the change from 95 To 98. Having run the 95 petrol in the tank down to virtually empty and filled with 98 I have been gragually advancing the ignition via the knurled nut on the distributor by 1 revolution increments. After each change I drove the car until fully warmed up and them did the "40mph in 4th" test as recommended by members on here. Well, the timing has gone from the fully retarded position on this adjuster to the fully advanced and I don't seem to have any running problems doing the test. although I have to say that the last run with it fully advanced did give my the feeling it wasn't running as smoothly as the previous setting, fully advanced minus 1 revolution so I have reset it to fully advanced minus 1 revolution ready for my next outing, which will be sunday for a club run at the latest. I gather that the marks on the shaft by the vacuum unit are at 4° intervals, ther seems to be 4 or maybe 5 intervals, so 16 to 20 degrees of adjustment if this is correct. I really find it hard to believe that the timing can be advanced this much without getting severe running issues. Maybe even though the shaft is moving there is something wrong internally and the timing hasn't been changed. Any comments, thoughts or advice? Baffled in Normandie. P.S. The Sunday run should give plenty of time to do the 40 in 4th test as one of the cars will be a 1937 Peugeot which 'cruises' at 30 to 40.... Thanks all
  25. That is what I intended to do but I dropped the knurled nut, hence why I used a steering clamp. I couldn't find the nut anywhere, until today. I was rummaging about behind the dials, as one does, and the nut suddenly fell out of where it was hidden. It is now back on the clamp. 😘
