Neil Clark
Can anyone recommend a kit that will only be used very occasionally?
Mathew
Burn out old, threaded bar and sockets to install new.
Badwolf
You can also press out the old bush with the threaded bar, washers and socket method. However I have found that some threaded bar is such poor quality that the thread strips very easily before the bush goes in or out. Smear bush with a little washing up liquid before you try to fit the new one to help.
Pete Lewis
I have a heavy box of all sorts of studding long bolts big washers and tat that is useful to drag almost anything . no special tools just a wide selection of accrued threaded pulling and pushing useful junk ....invaluable Pete
Colin Lindsay
Two sockets and a good vice. The little socket is the same size / smaller than the bush so it will press into the housing; the other socket is bigger than the bush so that it can be pressed out into it. Neil Clark
I have no vice nor old studding etc but I do have some G clamps so the small socket / big socket idea may work. I'll give it a go later. Thanks all.
Badwolf
If you are trying to press out the bushes from the main spring suspension eyes (eg. MKIV Spitfire) you will also need a hacksaw, elastolast, sustaining refreshment of your choice a swear box and a large selection of currancy. yorkshire_spam
I tend to extract bushes as follows... Select or buy a holesaw that fits over the inner metal tube but is smaller than the outer.... cut out the inner. Cold chisel in the sides of the outer and then knock it out with BFH and a punch. Can't imagine trying to do it without a vice on a sturdy bench though.
Neil Clark
Well, my first idea didn't work! It was probably a very cheap G clamp anyway.
Nigel Clark
I've used the two socket trick to remove wishbone bushes by applying pressure in a large bench vice. It also helps to give the bushes repeated soaking with penetrating fluid, Plus Gas etc not WD40. Nigel
NonMember
I wouldn't try a G-clamp. Even if you've got a solid one, you can't really hold it straight enough to work. A bench vice is much easier to work with but a length of threaded rod through the middle of the bush is the easiest way to keep the sockets properly aligned. Colin Lindsay
You've been in my loft again!! 2 hours ago, Neil Clark said: Well, my first idea didn't work! Neil Clark
Tee Hee! But got it done thanks to you all for the ideas and guidance you gave here. The spare G-clamp got it started, lubrication (not Fairy Liquid), a long bolt I found in my tool box through the middle, the deep socket and some washers. Thanks again.
AndyTV8
I don’t have a proper bench-vice either, but I do have a big variety of old bolts/washers and sockets that are used for pushing/pulling bushes. It isn’t ideal, but does manage to get most things sorted - although I do often resort to excessive blasphemy! well done for getting there! ........Andy
