SpitfireGeorge
Hi Guys, Sprayed my bonnet with rattle cans and thought the paint layer was fairly thick. As it was orange peeled used some compound and wax to remove the peel which it did. On inspection found that the primer was showing in one area. What would be the best stuff to use to remove the compound/wax so I can respray that area? Cheers, George
Colin Lindsay
Any proprietary panel wipe / degreaser should do the job. Any of my local autofactors have a good selection, ask for the trade stuff that bodyshops use. The stuff I use comes in 5 litre containers and I used it recently to degrease a new panel, which it did very easily and completely so that I could spray a primer coat. daverclasper
Would cellulose thinners work, do you know? Dave
poppyman
I have used meth's to remove wax in the past, the cutting compound should not leave anything nasty George. Thinners would damage the paint Dave, ok for a small spot but on a panel it would bring the paint off. Tony.
Nigel Clark
Panel wipe is best. DO NOT use cellulose thinners on the aerosol painted surface, it will remove the paint in a hurry. Nigel
Paul H
Screwfix Degreaser is ok . I also use brake cleaner aerosol tooolstation about £3.50 Paul
daverclasper
Poundland (and some other bargain shops) do brake cleaner, maintenance spray, carb cleaner etc, aerosols, for a pound. Some shops can be understocked since covid. I've found them no different from other brands
RogerH
Aerosol Brake/clutch cleaner come sin many varieties. Apart form removing dust they also cut through grease/oil Wynn's (£4.50) is an excellent degreaser but will attack many paint schemes. Halfords (£3.50) is awful stuff. Mild degreaser. Wouldn;t attack most paint finishes. I can imagine the cheaper Poundland etc offerings being harmless to paint but not special on grease However with anything going on paint - test a small area first. Badwolf
Take care that none of the products contain any sort silicone or you will be putting back more problems than you take off.

alan.gilbert_6384
Just out of interest i find good old petrol a great degreaser and evaporates so fast it does not react with paint
