Bobtaylor
Hi, I have just replaced the diaphrams on my twin strombergs without touching anything else. when I restarted the engine it’s characteristics are completely different eg it started fine but wouldn’t tick over until I adjusted the throttle screws. It feels completely different and not as smooth as before! can anyone suggest what might have happened. the new diaphrams are stiffer than the old ones, does this account for the changes, if so I assume the carbs will need setting up and balancing ? johny
Did you get the diaphragms in correctly with their lugs matching the indentations in both the piston and carb bodies? Its these that ensure the pistons are always installed in the same position...
Bobtaylor
Yes I was careful to ensure the lugs were in position, I did dismantle to check! Could the slightly stiffer rubber make any difference?
NonMember
Yes, the stiffer rubber can make a difference, especially if they're Pete's "elephant condoms". As Mathew said, why did you change them? Unless the old ones were actually split, a wash in petrol is normally all they need.
Wagger
Pal up the road obtained thick diaphragms from Rimmers. They did not work. He put the old ones back after cleaning. Pete has posted on these before. They are rubbish. Fit parts that are as the original, always.
PeteH
I`ve got a O/E Set off E-bay. yet to fit it, but its still boxed and labeled BL?. It was on offer for 12 quid so I grabbed it. Pete
Bobtaylor
I just had a spare pair, I checked the old ones and they seemed very flimsy so I changed them!!! I will change them back tomorrow, I must stop tinkering and try to adopt the “if it ain’t broke don’t fix it” approach.

I wish, Oh how I wish, The Microsoft, media/computer techs would learn from that. EVERY update, F**k`s up another piece of Heritage software, needing hours of Ar**ng about to get functioning again.😡😡 Pete
Pete Lewis
certainly these hopeless thick diaphragms will give poor running should be very flimsy/gossamer like and if wrinkled a wash in petrol will revert them to orig size yes think they are made from elephant condoms or old rubber boots but totally hopeless and sold by suppliers that should know better get you money back as not fit for purpose Pete
Bobtaylor
Normal service resumed, I replaced the originals. I am amazed how much difference there was.

I suppose, an idea, would be to discuss with Canley, Chic Doig, (any others?), to see if they have ok ones (as they restore, as well as supply parts)
