Get a long screw driver and use it like a stethoscope to try and track down the area the noise is coming from.
In days gone by an egg cup full of brake fluid in the cooling system would be a cure. Not sure how that would
effect the anti freeze though.
Wait till the level gets near to the lower mark before topping up and even then don't keep filling it up to the max mark.
You may find the level settles out somewhere in between.

my money is on the flex hose has collapsed inside.
There should be a rubber section on the bottom of the inner wheel arch so with the bonnet shut down
there shouldn't be water getting up onto the bulkhead.
Have you checked Petes suggestion of the heater air box drain being blocked or the wiper wheel boxes.

Set up a small tank or can in the engine bay feeding the fuel pump directly with a short length of flexy fuel line so you can do a short run.

Its quite possible the input shaft was from a Marina box as quite a few Marina based kit cars including the Marlin had Triumph overdrive gearbox conversions done this way and needed the longer input shaft as they kept the deeper Marina bell housing.
If its 20 splines its from a 1300 Marina and 23 splines is from either a 1800Marina or a 1700 Ital.

Just pull the wire off the sender and earth it out to the block and the light should come on,
if it comes on then the sender is faulty if not then the next suspect is the bulb.
could you possibly drill a hole in the back plate adjacent to the ratchet on the wheel cylinder and use a
screw driver to adjust the brakes.( thinking about it probably not???) Just a thought
Then put a grommet in the hole.
First thing to do is to release the bleed nipple and see if the piston goes back. It may be the flexible hose has
collapsed inside and is working like a non return valve.
I had it happen the opposite way when one brake stopped working.
