  1. If the Government want to make 'charitable donations' via their tax legislation it would be very rude not to take up their kind offer. If that offer happens to be due (not in this case I hasten to add) to badly drafted legislation, that is not the fault of the person taking up their kind offer of reduced taxation. I remember serveral years ago, the government of the day brought in a scheme of tax free dividends (I think) for small limited companies. There was a huge rush of one man businesses to become limited companies paying themselves dividends, instead of wages. It cost the government millions and only lasted 12 months.
  2. No!! As ever, from me, just my sincere thanks for your help and contributions to the forum along with your entertaining articles in the Courier.
  3. Thanks Gents. That confirms what I was thinking. I do agree with JohnD that an on line version could be done in parallel, indeed I doubt that there is any reason why the Courier will not be posted on-line shortly for on demand downloading. That should make everyone reasonably happy, including the tax authorities!!
  4. Colin - Congratulations, just noticed your 500th 'like; has come up.
  5. From my research, adhesives have many advantages over welding when used in the right place. No heat distortion, no danger of fire due to rust proofing compounds, no loss of paint etc on the inside of a box section, greater strength of joint due to a greater amount of adhesive within an overlap joint compared to a weld. No doubt these comments will generate disagreement from some quarters but call it what you will.. cold welding, adhesive bonding or just plain glue (!!) with modern formulations being nothing like the old araldite of 20 years ago, they have to be a serious alternative to welding etc for classic cars in the future.
  6. Just the same, currently heaving down with rain & hail. Good excuse to stay indoors and not go out to work on the car bonnet in my new 'workshop' (shed).
  7. Been there done that, but no field... river!!! ... and they were the old original rusty clips.
  8. No offence taken. Kettering is well away from me. Getting the frame in on a MkIv Spit is not really too bad but, as mentioned earlier in your thread, putting the radio in was an absolute pain. I rarely use it and was thinking of following Doug's example and fitting a blanking plate instead if the radio and fitting three gauges. More useful and quieter.
  9. ...and, if you remove the footrest and plate, you can get at the tunnel cover screw and plate behind. Superb.
  10. Looking good. Do you want to have a go at mine now? ... and the vacuuming too please!!
  11. KevinR ..... He has used the 'B' word. Strike him from the records.... immediately...... and never let him darken our doors again!!!! 🤣😅🤬
  12. WOW... That is brilliant. I really like the whole concept of the plate and the footrest. Do you mind me pinching the idea... you should patent it!!!
  13. I am very, very sad to see what has become of this thread. I really expect better of TSSC members and feel that for the sake of the forum and the club, Kevin should moderate it. What must casual readers think of this childishness? (NB This comment was originally posted in response to posts which have been deleted)
  14. Sorry if I opened a can of worms but I didn't understand the maths regarding the savings from tax and still don't. Tax (of whatever kind) is only a percentage of running costs etc and doesn't cover these running costs unless it triggers another form of relief. I agree with JohnD "I was given that argument (The VAT one) then, and as now, I cannot see why A/ it works, but have to accept the accountants view or B/ why it prevents a digital version". I would just like to understand the figures behind these claims, not for any ulterior motive other than interest as to how it works exactly. I do appreciate that sales of newspapers and magazines are VAT free but electronic versions (kindle etc) are not. So to sell a copy of The Courier hardcopy would be tax free but if the magazine were included in the cost of membership does that make the entire membership fee VAT free/reduced? Of course, if the membership subs only covered the purchase of 'The Courier' for 12 months that explains the saving in VAT!!
  15. Sorry... being thick here. Can't see how the printed Courier saves the club in tax. The best tax relief would only be a percentage of the cost either in production or perceived retail value, paid through subs. Even if the Courier didn't 'sell' a single copy there would only be tax relief as a percentage of the production costs paid. This is something I have never understood about companies that fail because they can't pay their tax bill. Tax is only charged on profit as a percentage, so where did the profit go??
  16. Pete - Can you explain the maths on that please. Not sure how having a vat free magazine keeps the membership subs down. Probably obvious but can't see it myself.
  17. The problem of who makes what, who owns who, and the quality of what is made by who for whoever has raged on this forum since I joined it. Buy something today and it works fine, buy it next week.. who knows. No one knows these days if the product (say NGK) has ever seen the factory where it is supposed to have been made. Fleabay is rife with counterfit products with no way of knowing what is good, bad or genuine. You simply pays you money and hope for the best.

    Grease gun

Never used a cartridge type gun. More fun filling up from a can of grease, feeling it ouse between your fingers and slide out of the tip of the gun....... I really need to get out more... or take more water with it!!!
  19. I don't think anyone is brave enough to follow up from that!!! Maybe on Doug's other website!!!!

    Grease gun

I concur with Paul. His situation sounds very much like mine. I bought a pair off fleabay, both leaked. A new set of washers for both. One now filled with ep90 the other with standard grease. Made for the job. I would use no other. Some tools are built for life and I beleive that Wanner guns are one of those products. You can also pick them up faily cheaply if you are prepared to wait. Some people just don't know the value of what they are selling, not just in money, but quality. You won't regret waiting for the best. Aidrian - Just a thought, check that the plunger pull chain hasn't engaged in the end cap, so retaining the spring plunger. This has happened to me several times, usually when upside down doing front/back. Not easy to spot initially!! This is the sort of thing you need: https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Vintage-Wanner-Grease-Gun-Hand-Held-High-Pressure-Grease-Swiss/153457140648?hash=item23bac223a8:g:AhcAAOSwvC1cuaif
  21. I have been doing a lot of research about adhesives for use in the motor trade and feel that these could be extrememly useful for the enthusiast and that, although used widely in modern day car production, are frowned on by the purists. I also feel that with professional work being more and more expensive, and of, in some cases, being of dubious quality, the use of high quality industrial/aviation grade adhesives could be the future in keeping our cars going, especially for those who do not weld or have limited dexterity (using glue not fidley clips!!!).
  22. Aidrian -Thanks for the info on the mastic. Glad you enjoy my ramblings and disasters on my main thread. Things will be taking off more in the next two weeks now that I have acquired the tools, products, knowledge and space to get on with it. I just hope that what I have learned is worthy of the exceptional talent of those I have learned from (includes all on here expecially Pete & Doug) over the last 6 months.
  23. Thats the one. I don't think I have changed my points since the restoration 30 years ago. I think the points only take a low 'trigger' current when the unit is set to electronic. Must look out the instructions.
  24. Adrian - Brilliant. What type of adhesive/mastic did you use? If anyone else has product recommendations please share.
  25. Amazingly, my antique electronic ignition is still working. It can be returned to 'normal' at the flick of a switch and can also be used as an imobiliser. Its a Sparkrite SX1000 system. That's the kiss of death for it now!
