  1. My kids are 17 and 19 so look after themselves. Unless there is money involved when for some reason I’m then their best friend ?
  2. Daft question, how many ladies are coming along tomorrow ( other than those twiddling obviously) My missus is coming but was wondering if she was going to be alone doing some sewing
  3. I'm good at carb balancing! Though I cheat and got a carb balancer - not sure my ears are good enough for the tube method!
  4. Perhaps its just me (And I would really love a pit!) but I always have that nagging thing about the risk of fumes in the pit.
  5. Yeah I know that now! They are a good bunch overall - just not 100% up on the vagaries of classics. How many look at them and say - its got a chassis so the hole in the sill doesn't matter?
  6. You will get continuity if the bulb is ok, but it won’t be close to 0 - it will be some ohms. No idea what, but shouldn’t be open circuit.
  7. Setting up the carbs? I have a very good idea of the theory but the practice is less reliable ?
  8. No you don’t particularly- but the skills are being lost on how these old cars should be checked. They are being lost as to how to maintain them and hence specialists are springing up as well as places like this forum. My local one is fine for general inspection- but When they did mine last year they couldn’t get the emissions right and screwed up my carbs because they only adjusted one carb.
  9. I’ve spoken to my local MOT place who did my Spit last year and they will give mine the once over - I don’t want a formal MOT as such - I just want a second pair of eyes over it - predominantly a brake test as that is the bit that is hard to test at home. Though my Land Rover discovery only ever had the pendulum weight thing for at least the last 3 MOT’s being 4x4 and not liking two wheel rollers.
  10. How does the additional friction from the wider tyres affect anything. Steering for example.
  11. I personally don’t see the point of LED lights in classic cars - they are arguably brighter, but don’t always look right. They are too directional if you know what I mean. If you fit them because they are less power consumption- well that is another argument but also partially flawed because Most indicator flash units need a load to work - so you have to add power resistors to each bulb. But each to their own ?
  12. I’m sure it will work - but without the centre silencer it might do your head in. Whats wrong with your current system?
  13. I suspect I’ve had a bit of this- but use seems to have sorted it out. Though I must adjust the handbrake on Saturday as I think the rear shoes have bedded in now too.
  14. One thing that you can't do (easily) on standard fuses on a Spitfire is work out the actual current draw - the modern fuses have a defined resistance depending on the rating, so by measuring the volt drop across the fuse via the two test points on the back of the fuse, you can calculate the current (ohms law) In theory you can do it on the glass fuses, but I'm not sure the resistance is as well documented or consistant?
  15. This is basically the exhaust on mine - has a center silencer which if the pictures in the Club book are correct, the Bell one doesn't? https://rimmerbros.com/Item--i-GRID005656
  16. I've just been out and put some Vaseline on the seal - given its low enough to get at it at the moment! I also remembered that I meant to replace the vent pipe at the top of the tank - given that I touched it last night and it was as brittle as a brittle thing can be without falling to dust! Had a length of fuel pipe - may or may not be R9 - but it will do for a while - so removed the remnants of the old pipe and pushed the new pipe on - its a bit long, but may drill a hole in the floor to vent it yet - but for now screwed a long bolt in to seal it. Hopefully that will eliminate one source of fuel smell!
  17. My Discovery 3 had no welding done to it when I sold it with 234k on the clock. It had had most other things replaced though
  18. All you need to do is copy the shared text from YouTube and paste it in here. And as if by magic it appears all nicely embedded.
  19. Well, technically from the 20th, yours will be flagged as MOT exempt - only if you tell them its substantially modified when its next due for tax will the MOT exemption be lost. Depends what engine you've put in and when though as to whether its substantially modified or not.
  20. Never thought of that. Not doing it now though - it’s too bloody cold now ? to be fair the tank flange was nice and clean and the locking ring is nice and tight.
  21. Well, I've answered my own question! The grove goes to the bottom - the other way it simply doesn't fit, it fouls the top of the tank. This is actually 90' round compared to the old one - which was wrong too as the float was about half way up the tank! So either the wrong sender was fitted or it was bent to suit something! So I did bend it so it was down to the bottom of the tank and it was reading empty - but when lifted up was still not reading full - now I may not have left it long enough, but putting the new one in was reading empty when the float is down and full when its up. The real test will be to fill it with fuel - and two things be right - the gauge read full and it not to leak!
  22. Well, to resurrect a fairly old thread! I bought a new sender sometime ago but the tank was never low enough at the right time to have a look. I also decided to get a new rubber and locking ring, which arrived this week (Was only three quid or something. Anyway tonight, I dipped the tank with my wooden stick and reckoned it was low enough to have a look. It was, but not by as much as I was expecting TBH. Anyway dropped the old one out and fitted the new one (Which came with a new seal) and the securing ring was in good nick - so didn't need my new one.......... The design is different - the resistant "box" is on a fairly long angled bar. The old much nearer to the hole it sits in. Question now is, I've fitted it and it is showing about 1/2 full - which is probably about right - but should the locating cutout be at the top or bottom - its currently at the bottom and looking at the picture again I/ not sure it shouldn't be top?
  23. Mine has a mid section silencer as well as the two at the back - when not booting it, it is quiet ? only a little loud when accelerating
